Josh Frisch, a Lubavitcher who was injured on Monday while training in the Israel Defense Forces, has been released from the hospital on Tuesday.
Frisch, who hails from Coral Springs, Florida, was one of two soldiers injured when the military vehicle he was in during a training exercise overturned at an IDF base in the south of the country.
Sharon Edri, a spokesperson for Soroka Medical Center in Beersheba, said Frisch, along with a second passenger who was relatively less injured, were evacuated by helicopter. One was treated in the trauma room and was hospitalized in the second surgical department.
“Thank G-d, Josh is not a skinny guy,” his brother-in-law, Yosef Shidler, told COLlive.com. “Today the doctors informed us that it was his lifesaver. Had he been the skinny guy, ‘the perfect weight,’ it is rather certain the weight of the vehicle would have crushed and killed him rather quickly. His weight saved his life.”
Shidler said Frisch experienced “some amazing miracles” which led to his quick rescue.
“Had they been on a real mission, it could have likely taken a surplus of over two or three hours until help arrived on the scene,” he said. “Due to the nature of the operation and those others were around to assist, they were able to free him in a relatively short time. Josh was pinned down to the ground under the humvee, with its weight on him the entire time.”
He added, “It was a true miracle that he fell into a ravine, as it was able to hold part of the weight off of him instead of flipping on a flat surface which would have instantly crushed him. Second, when he flipped, he was wearing a full gear to protect his head, which protected him from the impact. Third, had he fallen in the sand face down, he would have like aspirated in the sand and that alone may have killed him.”
On Monday morning, Frisch received a visit from Rabbi Menachem Kutner of Chabad Terror Victims Project and Soroka Shliach Rabbi Yossi Litzman, who reported that he was being released from the hospital for rest and continued treatment at his home.
“He is still in need of Tefillah, but G-d willing all will heal normally and naturally without the need for operations,” Shidler said. “Please continue to say Tehillim for Yehoshua Avraham ben Chaika.”

What a miracle
Chaplain, I’m not sure the HMVV is actually a thing, I believe you’re referring to the HMMWV. Which brings me to my next point. As a chaplain, I don’t believe you’re qualified to comment on the acquisition decisions and training guidance of combat-arms. This is especially true in light of the fact that the US Army most certainly DOES train with the “soft” HMMWVs. If I were you, I would refrain from making comments on topics you know very little about.
There are two types of HMVV’s , the old basic ones such as this , used in training etc . The newer version , used in Combat etc are up armored with bulle prof glass , 3-4 inches of steel armor all around and built much better and sturdier. Although I don’t know the circumstance of the accident , it appears to have been a rollover , which would explain the crushing nature of the damage to this HMVV .
