A Nor’easter is churning through the East Coast Thursday, bringing many Northeast cities their first snowfall of the season.
The snow and ice have caused over 1,000 flights to be canceled.
As snow moved into the Tri-State Thursday evening, the winter weather created a chaotic evening commute across the area.
The Bayonne Bridge was closed in both directions and multiple accidents were reported on the George Washington Bridge by 4 p.m. Upper level eastbound lanes were shut down for several hours while crews worked to clear the accidents. All lanes reopened shortly after 6:30 p.m., but travelers were advised to expect delays.
As of about 5 p.m., the National Weather Service was reporting about 3.2 inches of snow at Kennedy Airport, 2.5 inches in Rego Park, Queens, and 3 inches in Richmondtown, Staten Island. Some parts of the city, primarily in the Bronx, could see accumulation of up to 5 inches.
“Please take this weather seriously and exercise caution during your evening commute,” Mayor Bill De Blasio tweeted. “We could see some very slippery conditions on the roads.”
We may now see as much as 3-4 inches of snow in the city this afternoon, switching to rain sometime between 5 and 7 PM tonight. Please take this weather seriously and exercise caution during your evening commute. We could see some very slippery conditions on the roads.
