Two Chabad bochurim were held up at knifepoint late Sunday evening, in the third violent act in Crown Heights during the weekend.
The two Israeli Yeshiva students were reportedly leaving the Bank of America on Eastern Parkway and Kingston Avenue just before midnight, when they were approached by 2 black males, who pulled out knives and threated to kill them if they did not give them a sum of money immediately from the ATM.
Miraculously, a passerby called a policeman who was stationed at 770 Eastern Parkway across the street. Shmira volunteers were also called, and a search ensued for the perps, who fled the scene.
After a canvas of the area, the police located the muggers, who were taken into custody. A kitchen knife was recovered from the would be thieves.
The perps, who are both 15 years old, were possibly also wanted for another robbery, a source told COLlive. They are being treated as juvenile offenders.
This is the third violent incident in the neighborhood during the weekend.
On Friday, a 37 year old Jewish man was mugged by a man who threatened him with a brick in a building on Empire Boulevard. Police are still searching for the suspect.
In a third incident, a non-Jewish man was shot on President Street on Saturday morning. His shooter has not been arrested.
I agree with no 20, there is nothing left in CH, it is not the same old CH, and the people that come here for the holidays, go home after it is over so they don’t have to deal with all these criminals that go on in Crown Heights, the only reason I am still here because I don’t have money to move
The Rebbe, MH”M, did not believe in running , fleeing.
You sound like a stereotype from the 1980s. CH certainly has nice thinks going on but face realty. It’s a crime infested ghetto. If you can’t even take a walk with your wife at ten at night on Shabbos and feel safe then it’s not the place to be. Last time i was at 770 it was a filthy disorganized mess that seemed almost out of control. We all miss the Rebbi , but his physical absence, dare I say death, has left CH somewhat leaderless and it shows. We all know what Rashi says when a tzaddik leaves a… Read more »
If you want to know how fast the police are capable of responding wait until someone from our community robs a black at gunpoint – or, if we simply defends ourselves from a robbery. It would be comical to see how fast they’d all be tripping over their feet to give chase and spread a dragnet. I’m sure there would not be one officer available to give tickets.
Let me present this to you very gently. I love life. It is sacred, beautiful, delicate yet robust, and all to often, fleeting. For those who embrace it in it’s sanctity and purity, I honor and respect you and will help defend yours to the end. For those who disregard, pervert and demean life…… When you are dealing with “entities” who have complete, total and utter disregard for the life of human beings, then, as history has proven since the beginning of time, there is one and only one way to deal with it, and one and only one language… Read more »
They did literally nothing at all wrong.
Instead, look at the 15-year olds threatening people are knifepoint in the middle of Crown Heights. That is not normal. That is the real problem that community leaders need to look at.
To #14: Crown Heights is the shchunah of the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Nasi & Navi HaDor, Moshe HaDor. And along with Yerushalayim & Eretz Yisroel it’s the center of the world. That’s why thousands and thousands of people from all over the world come to CH each year, including thousands of Israelis. It has also become known in recent years for some of the best Kosher restaurants & markets and Judaica stores etc in all of America. Mikvaot, shiurim of Chassidus Chabad all over the place… Come to Chol HaMoed during Sukkos & there’s thousands of people dancing in the streets… Read more »
Thank Heavens their safe.
Grew up there was dangerous when I was a kid. Got pelted with eggs on Halloween threatened punched and other attempts. It’s the cesspool of NYC. Clueless hipsters Who think it’s kewl will find out soon enough how dangerous it really is. Once the hipsters start getting mugged eventually they will rethink the architectures kewlness and retreat to Williamsburg or Manhattan
Yes, if these were all children then we would say they should be home at night. What about the 37 year old man on Empire a few days ago- should he have stayed home with his mother? I’m sure if you blame enough victims for living their lives in a normal way, we’ll see a solution to this problem.
The only solution is to start actually defending ourselves, whatever it takes. It’s the only language they understand. We can also make a sweeping effort to track down criminals who get away by using video cameras of Jewish residents. The police have no interest in tracking down assailants of our community.
Being that a yeshiva schedule is fairly intense, it could very well be that this was the only time to care of this: don’t condemn the bochrim for “going against Seder”. This type of act was purely the muggers fault and the only response to this is that we need more security and better relations with the non Jewish community.
The mesivtas make the boys walk alone at night. They are 14 years old and forced to walk to school at crazy hours when streets are empty. This is unsafe and unnecessary. If something were to Chas v shalom happen how would they feel?
Maybe our community members need to hire professionals to train youngsters some easy tactics on defending ones self.
People should carry pepper spray when walking after 9PM
People should feel safe to walk around and do their business
As a older bachur myself, I visited that bank plenty of times, and at night too, it’s not a strange thing at all, your making as if if was a 10 yr old, going to a bank at night is completely normal, especially on a busy intersection and with a cop stand nearby.
I’m happy that at least bohrium were lucky …. but it’s 100% not ok to have rubbery happening in front of 770 or any place of CH . 24/7 patrol a must
Time for Giuliani the second! This deterioration in safety did not happen overnight. At first it’s unnoticeable. But one thing leads to another, until we find ourselves in such a situation.
why were such young bochurim walking themselves so late at night? we need the police to do their part, but we also need to do ours by teaching our children the laws of safety and going out late at night!
If this is happening we need to be prepared.
People should consider joining Shmira.
Where is common sense, brains
Maybe 2:00 am
Firstly if they are “students” they belong in bed at that hour שמירת הזמן
the police were actually in the right place at the right time.
