Chabad of Orange County, NY’s recent women’s event entitled “Physical and Spiritual Health” attracted a large crowd of ladies from throughout the county, held at the Chabad Center in Chester.
Led by Chana Burston, who co-directs Chabad with her husband, Rabbi Pesach, the elegant evening included a health presentation by local physician Dr. Jennifer Reich, a gourmet dinner set in pink décor as well as a Glass Fusion Mezuzah workshop.
Dr. Jennifer Reich, an internist at Middletown Medical, has been a pioneer in cancer research for Myriad Genetics. “Dr. Reich is an accomplished physician and researcher – and also a member of the community. She has traveled from coast to coast presenting her research and I was excited for her to share her knowledge with her own community,” says Burston.
Over fifty women from throughout the county listened as Dr. Reich explored “Genetics in the Jewish Community.” Chana Burston opened the evening explaining that Judaism prioritizes physical health and that one who is “physically healthy can achieve greater spiritual health.” “One in 40 Jewish women carry the BRCA Mutation,” says Reich. “If a person is at risk and gets tested for this mutation – this could be lifesaving.” Myriad Genetics, who sponsored the evening, provided optional screening and testing onsite.
Participants enjoyed learning the art of glass fusion with artist Brett Slavin of Slavin Studios as they designed Glass Mezuzah covers. “A hand-written scroll with the ‘Shema Prayer’ is placed inside the case and hung on doorposts outside and throughout the room,” explains Burston. “I like to think of a Mezuzah as a helmet – an extra layer of physical and spiritual protection.” Burston explained that the Mezuzah is positioned on a slant on the upper part of the door way. “We enter and exit our home – and we look up to kiss the Mezuzah – and remember that G-d is our ultimate provider and protector. We slanted position reminds us that true peace in a household is achieved through a compromise – being willing to shift our views to meet our spouse or child halfway.”
