A man who attacked a Chasidic Jewish man in Brooklyn’s Crown Heights neighborhood this week will not be charged with a hate crime, COLlive has learned.
Shervy Taylor, 18, is accused of allegedly beating a 26-year-old man with a tree branch on the corner of Albany Avenue and Empire Boulevard on Tuesday.
Although Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez requested Taylor be charged with a hate crime, a Grand Jury ruled that he will be charged with first degree assault, COLlive was told.
Chanina Sperlin, Inter-Governmental liaison at Crown Heights Jewish Community Council, says he is shocked by the decision.
“I am shocked and disappointed with the decision of the grand jury,” Sperlin told COLlive. “I appreciate the efforts of the DA for keeping me updated throughout the process, and for requesting that this be charged as a hate crime, which carries a higher sentence. Sadly, this was not what the grand jury decided.”
As reported on COLlive.com, a Jewish man crossing the street was suddenly assaulted by an 18-year-old black teen who was released from police custody a short while earlier for shoplifting.
The man was struck with a stick by the assailant on his back and shoulder while trying to flee into Quality Care Dry Cleaners, owned by Meir Shlomo Junik, on the corner. A bystander was injured in the attack as well. The assailant was apprehended.
New York public officials, such as New York City Council Majority Leader Laurie Cumbo, Public Advocate Tish James, New York State Assembly member Diana Richardson, State Senator Jesse Hamilton, and others condemned the violent attack.
“Our City has sadly seen a number of high profile hate crimes over the last few days, including one yesterday in Crown Heights,” New York City Council Majority Leader Laurie Cumbo, who represents the neighborhood, said.
“Hate and violence are inexcusable and do not represent who we are as a community,” she stated. “We must rise above this and stand together in the face of such crimes. It is more important than ever for us to uplift and strengthen our values of diversity, inclusion, safety, and unity.”

It’s incredibly disheartening to see what percentage of the people in NY have been so emasculated and turned into such sheep, that the discussion revolves completely around whining about what we need to do in order to keep CH safe. What should be the topic of discussion is how quickly you can establish a “shall issue” state policy for concealed weapons permits and how quickly residents can be trained to carry, and how quickly bthe people of CH can put the “fear of G-D” into these animals so that they would never even attempt to do something like this ever… Read more »
they should have beaten his brains out then call the cops, with his own stick. Next time he might have a gun!
He was determined mentally ill, hence ruling out the possibility of a hate crime charge. It is important to note that the judge in the following article didn’t decide the charges, she just set the bail amount based on the charges that were predetermined.
My question based on this is, if he’s mentally ill, and obviously a demonstrated danger to self/others, why was he let out without a psych eval?
If it’s not a hate crime ? What is that ? This criminal is 18 years old and he must go to jail forever , he used our money for free public education but didn’t learn a lesson or maybe learned very good – do whatever u want , Jews will pay off your education and then u can punch them back …. the problem that we are never united to defend our community and our rights , we are tax payers, we are payid for these criminals education and now will pay for his jail time , something wrong… Read more »
You stated that in the Boro park attack he was aiming his attack at a specific individual. Nonsense. Look at the video. First he almost ran over a different yid a block earlier then he screeched to a halt and jumped out of his car and ran to attack a yid walking to shul at 730 in the morning. Yes we must destroy these liberal democrats who are endangering our communities. Vote republican and the message will be heard.
Please tell readers what he IS charged with, or is he not charged with anything at all, not even assault, etc.?
We need to unite every orthodox community. Boro park, crown heights, williamsburg, flatbush, sea gate, queens,Staten Island, riverdale, lakewood,Toms River,Jackson, monsey, monroe, etc. and vote Republican down the lines. In unity there is strength.
No one’s too important or busy to vote!
There’s nothing the politicians or the prosecutors can do about it.
And I doubt the Boro Park attack was really motivated by hatred of Jews. It looks like he specifically targeted this person, for whatever reason, not Jews in general. That makes it not a hate crime.
Ummm the politicians helped here. The grand jury is a randomly selected group of people that decided whether to charge a person with the alleged crime or not and under which statute. Has nothing to do with politics.
I am a very pragmatic voter and disagree with my friends who vote GOP down the line, its just not shayach to do that in Brooklyn. Not this time. I plan on following my friends and voting GOP straight, except for uncontested races etc.
All should know that the Judge who arraignment I’m AFTER he was indicted for a serious felony in this case allowed this defendant to be released WITHOUT BAIL! This guy is walking the streets!
Vote Republican down the line Notice how the democRATic politicians from the governor to the mayor to The senators laugh at our communities. First they make the crown heights attack a hate crime. Then it’s a non hate crime. The attack in Boro park was first classified as a non hate crime but now before nov 6 the democrats are worried that this will be a springboard for Orthodox Jews to topple democrats on various levels so they quickly changed it to a hate crime. If you want real change vote Republican can do that we can have Trump change… Read more »

Most of CH: “No. Sorry, I’m too busy (i.e. lazy)”.
Can’t blame them. We’re too lazy to vote!
