Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez will be trying Monday’s violent assault on 2 Jewish people in Crown Heights as a hate crime, applying the law’s severity to prosecute the attacker.
This development follows a press conference held on Tuesday at the site of the attack in intersection of Empire Blvd. and Albany Avenue, where New York public officials gathered to condemn the violent attack.
As reported on COLlive.com, a Jewish man crossing the street was suddenly assaulted by an 18-year-old black teen who was released from police custody a short while earlier for shoplifting.
The man was struck with a stick by the assailant on his back and shoulder while trying to flee into Quality Care Dry Cleaners, owned by Meir Shlomo Junik, on the corner. A bystander was injured in the attack as well. The assailant was apprehended.
“Our City has sadly seen a number of high profile hate crimes over the last few days, including one yesterday in Crown Heights,” New York City Council Majority Leader Laurie Cumbo, who represents the neighborhood, said.
“Hate and violence are inexcusable and do not represent who we are as a community,” she stated. “We must rise above this and stand together in the face of such crimes. It is more important than ever for us to uplift and strengthen our values of diversity, inclusion, safety, and unity.”
Cumbo said that together as a community we came to celebrate a safe West Indian day parade – Jouvert, a beautiful Sukkos celebration, and just last week COLlive’s tenth anniversary party and “COLlive Day”.
Public Advocate Tish James, who is the Democratic nominee for New York State Attorney General, called the attack “a disgusting act of anti-Semitism” and stated that “we stand together to denounce this hate and show that we will never tolerate any violence or hate in New York City.”
Evan Bernstein, Regional Director of the ADL organization in New York, said: “Antisemitic assaults like yesterday in Crown Heights can’t become the new normal in Brooklyn. The community must continue efforts to build bridges. Thank you, NYPD for your work.”
Participating in the press conference were New York State Assembly member Diana Richardson, State Senator Jesse Hamilton, Rabbi Eli Cohen of the Crown Heights Jewish Community Council, Pinny Hikind representing NYC Comptroller Scott Stringer.

Nothing is going to happen to this guy. Just now the Arab who attacked a yid in Boro park was released by guess who. The first Chassidic judge. I’m never voting for these democrats again even if they are Chassidic. I’d rather have a tough got like Trump.
Blah blah blah. Summary of the whole shpiel: “I’m amazing and I support all of you and I’ll tell you all anything you want to hear so you’ll vote for me and save me from having to face the reality of my own pathetic existence. I’m a great person and I really care about you, I’m not just in it all for myself and my own money, power, fame and glory. No, I’m just a uniquely altruistic person whose only interest is to help others and not to profit.” We all have self interest. As Reb Mendel AH once said,… Read more »
What does Trump have to do with any of this again?

Crown Hights has come a very long way as a community that is now showing respect and help from all ethnic groups. I find it same old same old as all the elected officials come running but they really have no contact with the community’s all year and this has gone one for decades. I do ask why an 18 year old Perp who had a DAT summons and now an assault / hate crime charge doesnt have a name released to the public? I wish a full recovery from those that were hurt and I would hope that someone… Read more »
Can’t help but love them!
Whether or not he is charged with a hate crime should depend solely on the evidence of his motivation, not on a news conference.
Don’t be so sure he will be charged with a hate crime. They just dropped the hate crime charge on the Arab who attacked the Boro Park Jew today. Outvote the liberal democrats. Vote Republican down the line. Trump 2020.
So what’s being done to prevent this again?!?!
