A large fire broke out in an apartment building in Crown Heights on Monday, as residents of the neighborhood were celebrating the Sukkos holiday.
At around 11:50 pm, a fire broke out at 613 E New York Avenue near Kingston Avenue. A resident of the building next door smelled fire, and looking out the window, saw flames shooting out from the porch window of a second floor apartment, she told COLlive.
She immediately called 911 and began alerting the other residents of the building, she said. Shmira assisted in the evacuation of the building, including many residents with small children.
There were no serious injuries, although Shmira notified Hatzalah and the Hatzalah volunteers treated the patients.
The fire lasted approximately 20 minutes.
The displaced family was taken in by a relative.
A resident of the building told COLlive the fire originated from a yartzeit candle which was left burning on the porch.
“It’s a miracle we were still awake and saw the fire,” the resident of the building told COLlive. “Thank G-d everyone was able to get out in time, and no one was seriously injured.”

The NYFD they run in when everyone runs out that’s why they are called the bravest
True, Don’t use the plastic one’s and use only the Glass ones. But Always Have A Metal Well Sized Tray Under Any Type Of Candles that you light – it’s Pekuach Nefesh, and Don’t take Any Chances.
They risk their lives to save ours!
Put your yartzeit candle on stove top
But metal or glass . Not plastic
Get metal yortzeit candle. Besides in this case it would be safer to have a small controlled fire on the stove like we did
Net Mitzvah , to save money now makes candles in plastlic containers which has melted and caused many fires same with Chanukah kits , buy only glass kits , put glass yohrtzeit in fireproof dish with water
Don’t buy this plastic yohrtzeit candle the container melts because it’s made with plastic cheap china garbage , same with Chanukah oil candle kits made with plastic , only buy glass kits and glass Chanukah kits ! Too many fires
