A New York City Council member says he will sponsor gender-segregated beach days for his Jewish and Muslim constituents this summer.
Councilman Chaim Deutsch announced the first-ever “Southern Brooklyn Beach Day,” hosting separate dates for men and women, free of charge.
“I have a lot of Orthodox Jewish and Muslim constituents in my district who have never been able to go to the beach before,” the Democrat told the New York Post. “They’ve never been able to smell the beach, to walk in the sand. Everyone should be able to enjoy the beach.”
Deutsch said he is raising private funds to cover the cost of taking over the beach for two days at Kingsborough Community College, which sits next to popular Manhattan Beach.
The beach would normally be closed on both Fridays since the college doesn’t have summer classes that day.
Under his plan, June 29 would be set aside for men and boys from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and July 27 would be reserved for women and girls during those hours.
Deutsch said men and women of all faiths would be welcome on their respective days.
Deutsch is raising private funds to cover $400 per day in costs for lifeguards and other staff.
“We want to be neighborly,” said college spokesman Anthony Andrews, adding that the councilman has “been very supportive to us.”
Such a great idea, but already there is critisicm. But even in the women only beach, we need to be covered up? Is this true?
Anything that is an improvement of tznius makes the world that much better. Should you still go? I can’t answer for you…but it is an improvement
There is no school that day which means the Institution is rented out as a private event public schools are not excluding anybody
Thank you for making this special treat for the men and women who will enjoy swimming on a beach. An opportunity we normally do not have. Kol Hakavod
Says a lot that you take issue with the men-only day but not the women-only day. Obviously gender equality doesn’t matter to the alt-left.
I will be there thank you so so very much, amazing incredible.I would just like to remind everyone to really really layer on the suntan lotion and get some one to do your back – very important.
Fine. You can spend your own gelt and rent out whatever beaches you want. Do you have to ruin this for everyone else with your gender equality nonsense?
@ #3) Kingsborough is Part of the CUNY ( City of NY)public school system. A much easier way would have been to spend a little gelt, and rent out a private beach club in nearby Atlantic Beach.
How bout Medgar Evans excluding white people on Martin Luther King day ?
If the women wear pretty tznius clothing- a swim dress that cover elbows and knees, or a large t shirt, and cover their hair, you still think it’s not ok?
You can be a “Chnyok” if you wish- however, don’t try to make others be one as well, when Halachah clearly permits this arrangement. The following is from Harav Moshe Feinstein zatzal: In response to a question if a woman may swim in a public area that is enclosed and reserved for women but in the presence of a male lifeguard, Rav Moshe Feinstein answered that according to the basic halachah it’s permitted to do so. After rendering his ruling, Rav Feinstein added that although halachically permitted, it’s recommended for G-d-fearing women and the wives of Torah scholars (who are… Read more »
The swimmers will be clearly visible from surrounding streets and homes. Consequently, it is NOT a tznius arrangement!
It may be good for the Muslims, but not for a Jewish woman who is Tznius and doesn’t go mixed-swimming.
This is really amazing and beautiful. WHen people want to be tznius they are able to. This is so nice. Maybe this can be done in Miami too? If there can be nude beaches why cant there be separate ones?
Read the article. It’s privately funded on a private beach
A publicly funded institution should not be allowed to exclude women from an event, just as it could not exclude Jews from a Christians only event, or blacks from a whites only event.
This is hardly a religious accommodation.
Find a private beach club, pay, and do it there.
“What an amazing thing for the Muslim community”
“What can’t the Jews be inclusive to other people’s feelings and allow everyone – men or women to attend together. “
