It has been a busy few months for those participating in the first ever tri-state high school Chassidus chidon.
The chidon was facilitated by Batsheva Learning Center, an organization dedicated to creating advanced learning opportunities for young Chabad women.
Girls from the five participating high schools have been learning the entire Sefer Ma’amarim Yiddish, a total of 53 ma’amarim. Every 3-4 weeks the girls were tested on another set of ma’amarim, and those with an average of over 80% on all 5 tests were invited to participate in a final chidon, which took place the Friday before chof-beis shvat at Beis Rivkah Crown street. The goal of the chidon was to encourage the participating students to master an entire sefer of maamarim containing fundamental ideas in Chassidus, as well as to inspire their family and friends who gathered to watch.
The 16 students who participated in the final Chidon were introduced to the audience of hundreds of their fellow high school students and family members, before making their way to the stage at the front of the room.
Two students, Yehudis Hecht and Nechoma Dina Rosenberg spoke about the impact the learning they did had on themselves and the people around them and how it empowered them to continue learning on their own.
Then, the competition began. Dramatic music filled the room, and the words “Who wants to be a Chidonaire?” came up in large letters on the screen. The chidon was competitive and fast-paced; the contestants had only 30 seconds to answer each multiple choice question. Each girl sat with their back facing the crowd, and held up a board with their answer to the cheering crowd behind them. After the first round, contestants were eliminated if they answered a question too slowly or incorrectly.
The questions gradually got more and more difficult until only three winners remained. Esty Scheiner, from Bais Chana Academy won third place, Mukki Morosow, from Bnos Menachem won second place and Mushka Hendel from Beis Chaya Mushka won first place. The top three winners were awarded with seforim sets that would encourage them to continue their learning. In addition to those who won the game show, the girls who had scored the top ten averages on the tests were announced and they received certificates that awarded them the opportunity to go on an exclusive weekend retreat in the Poconos next week!
Congratulations to Chaya Mushka Braun, Mushka Hendel, Devora Hodakov, Lieba Laufer, Chaya, Lipszyc, Mukky Marosov, Esty Scheiner, Tonya Schmukler, Devorah Silberstein and Batya Vigler.
Special mention goes to Shaina Hecht, Shternie Gurkow, Yehudis Hecht, Chana Majesky, Rivkah Mitnizki, Chana Piekarski, Shaindel Reizes and Nechoma Dina Rosenberg who scored an 80% average on their tests and participated in the final Chidon.
Bathsheva Learning Center hopes to make the chidon an annual event, so stay tuned next year for details.
