Beth Rivkah High School students announced the initiation of a new Challah Bake challenge in honor of vov tishrei, Rebbetzin Chana’s Yartzeit.
Modeled after the popular ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, women and girls are encouraged to bake challah, video themselves making the bracha, and nominate 3 friends to do the same within 24 hours, or donate $18 to Chevra Simchas Shabbos V’Yom Tov. (Donations can be made at www.cssy.org)
Being that this year is Hakhel, the students thought it appropriate to create unification through one of the three mitzvos pertaining to women and the name of Chana, which is an acronyn for Challah, Nidah, and Hadlakos Neiros.
In the video created by the students, Beth Rivkah nominates Beis Chaya Mushka of Monsey, LGHS of Chicago, Beth Rivkah of Montreal, Bnos Chomesh Academy, Bnos Chaya of Albany, Bais Chaya of Florida, Torah Academy Girls High of South Africa, and Bnos Chomesh of Toronto, inviting them to participate in the challenge. They are hoping to make the mitzvah of challah go viral, and invite the public to join as well.
Here’s how it works:
Make the dough. For recipes, visit http://atasteofchallah.com/. Remember to start early: there’s only 24 hours to get that dough rising!
Use your camera or smartphone to video yourself making the brachah of hafrashat challah and separating the dough.
Nominate three people to take on the Challah Bake Challenge
Send out your video to your nominees and share it with your friends and family using the hashtag #ChallahBakeChallenge
Email your video along with your name and mailing address to [email protected] for a reward.
This project is לזכות רפואה שלימה לתינוק הלוי בן אסתר שרה, the son of a Beth Rivkah alumnus. Please have him in mind for a complete and immediate refuah when making the bracha.
For questions and comments, email [email protected] or text (718) 909- 5245.

i am so excited aboat this idea!!!
its probably going to go viral in a blink of an eye just a little bit more advertising and a tad more work and i garantee you that everyone will know aboat this sooner rather than later
This is such a great mitzvah uniting all Jewish women
G.O of Bais Rivka, thank you.
Many weeks ago, I make a Hachlatah to bake Challah every Shabbat. That week, I knew I should but ran out of time. The next week again was very hectic. Slowly but surely, I completely forgot my Hachlatah. And then- I see this article, and BOOM it all comes back to me.
Thank you GO, for inspiring me to do what I promised, and for giving me the special Mitzvah.
I will definitely bake Challah this Shabbat- and you all should, too.
Btw background music is done by izzy d j and he is simply AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!
Great idea! However, if it’s all about unification, why not start at home and invite all the other girls’ schools in Crown Heights to participate the challenge I.e. bais chaya mushka and other smaller schools in CH?
While you’re at it, you can increase your mitzvah by joining a wonderful challah-baking group and help make miracles happen! Email [email protected] and get a (short) list of people to daven for: singles needing a shidduch, a childless couple, refuah shlaima, etc. If you’re doing hafrashas challah Erev Shabbos or Yom Tov, you daven for them during hafrashas challah, then notify the leader that you’ve baked. (You can also daven for them during lichtbenshen.) No strings attached with this group: even if you bake only once in awhile, you’re good. Please spread the word, as they need 43 bakers each… Read more »
