The 12th annual Gala Dinner of Chabad of Palos Verdes in California was held at an unlikely and exciting venue: “The Big Stick,” also known as the USS Iowa (BB-61) battleship.
Docked today at the Pacific Battleship Center at the Port of Los Angeles, the battleship is the last lead ship of any class of United States battleships and was the only ship of her class to have served in the Atlantic Ocean during World War II.
David Canfield, one of the former members of the crew who served on the ship, was one of the honorees of the dinner, recognized by Shluchim Rabbi Yitzie and Rochie Magalnic and their community.
Receiving the award, Canfield accepted the tribute on behalf of all the veterans of the USS Iowa and spoke about his time in the service and what the ship and its history meant to him.
One of the key moments of the evening was Rabbi Magalnic’s announcing the beginning of the new CTeen branch at Chabad of Palos Verdes, stressing that “our children and the youth of today are our future.”
All in attendance were very moved by Chabad teen member Benji Wasserman, who spoke fondly of his experience with Chabad. MC Michael Unger shared his inspiration from the recent book Rebbe by Joseph Telushkin on how the Rebbe always strove to do more, to never being satisfied with one’s accomplishments.
The dinner was opened with the blessing of Hamotzie led by Chabad of Palos Verdes Chazan Dr. Jack Friend. The Chassidic rock band 8th Day performed a special tribute for peace in Israel and around the world and then ended the evening with a spirited concert and dance set.
