Aliya Enjoys Summer Shabbaton

ALIYA members from Crown Heights enjoyed their third annual Summer Shabatton in Wilkes-Barre, PA last weekend.

ALIYA (Alternative Learning Institute for Young Adults) members from Crown Heights just enjoyed their third annual Summer Shabatton in Wilkes-Barre, PA.

ALIYA and Bais Menachem of Wilkes-Barre, PA (an alternative learning yeshiva for at-risk Jewish youth) have worked hand in hand for the past 11 years helping young adults find their place in our community. ALIYA regularly refers members to Bais Menachem of Wilkes-Barre as well as welcomes them back to join shiurim, farbrengens and Shabbos programs. Together, ALIYA and Bais Menachem are striving to inspire the next generation of our community.

Aside from the Wilkes-Barre Shabbaton providing a refreshing change of scenery and pace, it also provides ALIYA’s members with plenty of inspiration and a feeling of being truly welcomed by their hosts. Rabbi and Mrs. Yossi Schulman invited the ALIYA guests for a delicious Shabbos meal and farbrengen Friday night while Rabbi and Mrs. Pinny Levitin did the same Shabbos day. Most of the ALIYA members were familiar with these Rabbis from their previous Yeshiva days and were very happy to reunite.

Rabbi Uri Pearlman hosted a Motzoei Shabbos barbeque/ kumzitz and then gave an early Sunday morning Chassidus Shiur before the grand trip.

ALIYA members thoroughly enjoy their Shabbatons in Wilkes-Barre and all agreed that these weekends are by far the most joyful, uplifting and fun weekends of the year.

In the previous years that ALIYA has gone to Wilkes-Barre for a Summer Shabbaton, at least one ALIYA member from Crown Heights has stayed on to join the wonderful Bais Menachem Yeshiva – thus rededicating himself to Torah learning and Jewish education. Since this trip, Rabbi Mendy Baitz, junior Assistant Rabbi of ALIYA, has resolved to make a monthly trip to Wilkes-Barre with Aliya’s most improved members of the month.

ALIYA is committed to serving the spiritual, physical, educational, emotional needs of young adults in the Crown Heights community. For further information on ALIYA, please visit To make a contribution to support ALIYA’s work, please visit

Thank Gd for Aliya. They took in my son years ago when we wouldn't let him into our house. He is now married, frum and starting his own family. If not for Aliya I'm not sure if he would still be with us today. Please support aliya there are many more youngsters in our community that turn to them every day.

Nissi Russell's mom
Rabbi Feiglin how can I possibly put this into words? The work you do, not only do the boys learn judiasm but they enjoy every program you arrange for them. From a moms point of view, I thank you VERY much for all the work & effort which you instill in these boys. Not once did I EVER judge my son & neither have you. You accept him the way he is & that's what makes Nissi such a great person & we are so very proud of him.
