An evening of tribute and inspiration will be taking place on February 27, 2011 in recognition of Rabbi J. Immanuel Schochet and his wife Rebbetzin Jettie Schochet.
The gala event to be held at Beth Avraham Yoseph Synagogue, 613 Clark Avenue West in Thornhill, Ontario, is being chaired by Rabbi Dovid Schochet, Rabbi Zalman Aaron Grossbaum and Avrohom and Rose Rappaport.
Rabbi Schochet is a world-renown authority on Jewish philosophy and mysticism, and has authored 35 books and numerous articles, opinions and treatises concerning all Jewish subject matter. In the past Rabbi Schochet has travelled to countless Chabad Houses and Lubavitch institutions offering communities the privilege to experience his abundant insights.
As an extraordinary dynamic speaker, he has inspired thousands worldwide. Also, as the instructor of the Ivy League Program in the Catskills each summer, he embraced the opportunity to influence and challenge our finest, brightest Jewish minds.
He was the Rabbi of the Kielcer Congregation in Toronto for 36 years before becoming the Rabbi at Beth Joseph Lubavitch in 1996. He also served as Professor of Philosophy at Humber College in Toronto, Canada for 25 years, and simultaneously taught Medical Ethics at the School of Medicine at the University of Toronto. With the onslaught of cults in the 70’s and 80’s, especially Christian missionary organizations, Rabbi Schochet pioneered a successful network of anti-missionary campaigns which succeeded in reconnecting numerous Jews to their religious roots, literally saving their souls.
Rebbetzin Schochet is a sixth-generation native of Holland, and was one of the “hidden children” in World War II. Her reunited family relocated to Dublin, Ireland in 1951, where she married Rabbi Schochet in 1962, and together, they immigrated to Toronto. Rebbetzin Schochet is a pillar of the volunteer community, serving in many capacities.
She has served as coordinator of the women’s Chevrah Kadishah for 30 years, and is one of the founding members of Meginei Chanah in Toronto, teaching young brides about the traditional Jewish laws of family purity. While her schedule as a Baycrest volunteer, speaker, devoted mother and wife, and dedicated rebbetzin to her beloved congregation is hectic and fulfilling, her personal guiding principle remains “family always comes first.”
The rabbi, rebbetzin and the Beth Joseph Lubavitch Shul continue to be pillars of the Rebbe’s vision of Toronto as expressed to their Mara D’asra Rabbi Dovid Schochet in a yechidus over 50 years ago that “Toronto will be an international centre of Chassidus.”
Speakers for the evening are their son Rabbi Yitzchak Schochet, Rabbi of the Mill Hill synagogue in London and one of the ten most influential rabbis in the UK; Rabbi Sholom Ber Lispkar, Shliach in Florida since 1969 and founder of “The Shul” in Bal Harbour; Rabbi Bentzion Kravitz, founder of Jews for Judaism.

I did not know about Rabbi I. Schochet z/l – I have had once the immense privilege of speaking a few times with Mrs. Jettie Schochet, one of the most beautiful human beings I ever met in my 73-year life. May HaShem comfort her and guard her always

Mazel tov on this great honour. We have long been admirers of Rabbi Emanuel Shochet and his very special wife Jettie. We would love to be with you, but we will be out-of-town. We wish you both many years of good health & continued nachas from your children.
Rabbi Schochet has been involved with a number of charities that are close to his heart over the years and the proceeds will be dispursed to the various charities. This would include certain specific Chabad mosdos as well.
