Rabbi Daniel Schonbuch, an expert in marital and pre-marital education and teens at risk, will be training rabbis of the National Council of Young Israel to deal with families and individuals in troubling situations.
Schonbuch, a Lubavitcher therapist and an advice columnist on COLlive.com, is the author of “At Risk – Never Beyond Reach” and “First Aid For Jewish Marriages.”
The one day seminar “Ensuring a Bayis Ne’eman B’Yisrael: Training Our Torah Leadership to Understand and Respond” will be held Thursday, January 13, 2011, 5:00pm at Young Israel of Bedford Bay, 2114 Brown Street in Brooklyn, NY 11229.
He will be joined by Rabbi Dovid Weinberger, the Rav of Congregation Shaaray Tefila in Lawrence, NY; Dovid Kohn, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Certified Addictions Counselor; and Rabbi Meir Rizel, Director of Men’s Education for Shalom Task Force.
“The issue of domestic abuse needs to be explored by rabbis and rebbetzins in our community,” says Schonbuch who has also lectured on the issue at the recent International Kinus Hashluchim in New York.
He told COLlive.com: “Unfortunately we are not immune to these problems. There are Jewish marriages where emotional, physical, financial and other types of abuse take place.
“Often shul Rabbis and their wives are on the front lines in our communities. They hear about these issues first hand from their congregants and need to know how and when to react.
“For many years Shalom Task Force has been on the forefront of educating community leaders about this issue. Once again the Young Israel movement is a true partner in helping educate their leaders in how to deal with this painful issue.”
There are no fees for this program — Light refreshments will be served.
