Helping to Care for Sally
Alzheimer’s is a disease when nerve cells die in areas of the brain which may include memory, judgment, thinking and other mental abilities. Over time, Alzheimer’s gradually destroys a person’s memory and ability to learn and carry out daily activities such as talking, eating, and going to the bathroom. As the disease progresses, individuals may also experience changes in personality and behavior. Unfortunately, there are no cures for Alzheimer’s disease and there is no way to predict how fast someone will progress through the stages of the disease.
Sally, a lady in my community here in Palo Alto California, has Alzheimer’s. I remember when I was just about two years old, Sally would come over once in a while to take me to the park. At the time I had 11 siblings, so it was a big help for my mother when Sally took us out. I clearly remember being excited when Sally came because it meant a ride to the park. Now Sally is in her early sixties but she needs to be cared for like a two year old child.
Jack, Sally’s husband, does everything for her and goes everywhere with her. He even buys clothes for her in the latest styles. He makes sure Sally matches every day and puts jewelry on her. It is very hard for Jack. He can never do anything for himself because Sally has to be watched carefully like a young child at all times.
What I hope to be able to do, IY”H, is to help Jack care for Sally and at least give him a few minutes to do whatever he needs, by himself. I have learned that interacting with someone who has Alzheimer’s is a challenge. Sally isn’t interested in many things, so when she is interested in a game–a minute later she’s looking for something else to do. When playing with children, I have to be creative and think of another fun activity to do together. The same goes with Sally. I have attached some pictures of me playing with Sally.
Just as a few years ago Sally helped my mother watch me, I hope to be able to help Jack watch Sally.
