Jurors in the child labor case against Sholom Mordechai Rubashkin have returned with a not guilty verdict, giving the Chassidic family the positive turn they’ve been praying for.
Jurors indicated they had reached a decision at about 12:50 p.m. Monday at the Black Hawk County Courthouse in Waterloo, Iowa.
Jurors deliberated all day Friday and returned this morning to continue their deliberations. They ordered lunch in shortly before noon.
Rubashkin was charged with 67 counts of child labor violations in connection with minors found working at the Agriprocessors kosher meatpacking plant in Postville.
Rubashkin, whose father owned the operation, was described as the CEO and co-VP of the company.
The trial began May 11, with closing arguments June 1 and 2.
Rubashkin will be sentenced June 22 in federal court for separate fraud convictions in connection with bank loans Agriprocessors received.

Does anyone have a feel for whether and how this will affect the sentencing in the other trial? I know it shouldn’t but will this help or hurt Judge Reade’s thinking on the matter? My non-informed view: on the one hand, she will see that public opinion has allowed him to escape as not a monster and therefore she’d be reluctant to persecute him unnecessarily. On the other hand, she may feel that since he didn’t get what he deserved she’ll hand him a more strict sentence.
