Candidates for the executive board of the Vaad Hakohol – Crown Heights Jewish Community Council met Thursday for the first time since they filed their candidacy for the upcoming elections.
9 out of 12 hopefuls were present: Fishel Brownstein, Zev Cadaner, Michoel Chazan, Yosef Keller, Elie Poltorak, Chanina Sperlin, Meir Spinner, Zaki Tamir and Aron Vogel.
Absent from the meeting at the council’s offices on Kingston Avenue were Avrohom Benaroch, Yosef Hackner and Meir Schreiber.
Participants were said to be fully briefed on the operations of the government-funded social service organization and had a chance to hear of its latest developments from Executive Director Eli Cohen.
Candidates made suggestions for new programs in addition to the counseling for housing, employment, immigration, crime, benefits and senior citizen services.
Some of those ideas will be presented at a town-hall like meeting scheduled for Sunday, June 6, 2010, at the Lubavitcher Yeshiva on Crown and Albany.
And before they debate each other before the local Jewish residents, they have agreed on civility and avoiding any smear campaigns.
“All agreed on conducting the campaign in a spirit of unity and respect,” one participant told COLlive.com.
The elections will be held Sunday, June 13, 2010.

as long as there is peace in ch who cares whos running- stop picking on the little details and look for the people who will make ch the holiest and peacefullest place- NOT those who let their personal agendas stop them from helping the situation
the bylaws say you have to be shomer torah umitzvos to run
and having a beard is one of the mitzvos as explained at length in the Rebbes writings
I could not agree more…………… Im also a Bubby & I see men with beards & I don”t know why they have a beard……….
VOTE MIER SCHREIBER!!! The guy gave every penny to the community, he only wants the best for the neighborhood!
Lets restore crown heights to its rightful glory!
but alot of these people i see them in 770 davening shacharis at 2 pm
and ZEV Cadaner is always found learning Chassidus EVery morning sharp at 4:30 AM soo for me the choice between a special chosid and a person who is bored looking to make action is quite clear
Nice to see that all board members know how to write.

BS:D excellent comment # 18, maybe that’s why not every candidate showed up.But the main point is you must care, you must show up and vote and get your friends do do the same-change is in the offing and it cannot and will not occur without the non carers caring. Otherwise they will have no one to blame but themselves
We’ll run against each other but we can’t say what we want or how dirty you are. Hahaha…
Whatever. I don’t care either way.
” CHANINA FOR PRESIDENT”
you were disrespectful and totally baseless ‘n clueless.
I’m voting ONLY for the guys with trimmed beards! I see at lest TWO – thank goodness !
Thanks for bringing it to my attention.
SIgned,
Your neighbor, friend, kingston shop owner, shmrim or shmira guy, chaverim people, hatzolo guy, ohel this ohel that…. x 100’s that wouldn’t think twice about helping you regardless of attire.
To #1 – “He who brings up the past is the one living in the past.” It is always assumed that a yid has done tshuvah – and the actions speak loudly here – BUT there are those who wish to dig into the dirt again. What a shame. Even if you are right – HEY, give it a chance and hold your pen. To those who want beard etc. You couldn’t be more correct – IN A PERFECT WORLD. However, we live in CHT’s, and there is a significant plurality who look, live, and think, without beards. They should… Read more »
we need people who dress in yellow and pink to represent those in crown heights who dress in yellow and pink
we need people who trim and shave to represent the people in crown heights who trim and shave.
must most importantly, we need those who wear black and white, full beards, and work full time jobs to represent the majority of crown heights who wear black and white with full beards and work full time jobs. I support Yosef Hackner! HACKNER! Vote Hackner! Take back Crown Heights and Vote HACKNER!
BS:S 1.Since when do candidates meet with incumbents.Candidates are supposed to come forth with fresh ideas. 2 Ostensibly, the purpose of the meeting was to discuss election procedures. This is not the job of the Vaad .Elections are run by the Nitzigim 3. Another purpose was to discuss the ‘fine’ job that the Counsel is doing-this is something the entire community would like to know. Why all of a sudden the candidates are chosen to hear this. So what was the real motive for the incumbants to call for such a meeting-complete with photos and a police officer just happens to… Read more »
I am a local bubby B”H – i have no idea who the young man with the trimmed beard is, but i can tell you this : Please put away your ruler & stop measuring beards ro see who “qualifies” as a Vaad member. I am DELIGHTED that ther is a young person who cares enough about the future of Crown Heights to give of his time and energy and run. Perhaps you haven’t noticed, but LOTS of our kids have this look – why shouldn’t THEIR needs and concerns be represented ? One more little secret – we live… Read more »
I think that beard is also very important for a chassiddishe community representation
I also think that representants have to be locals
I also think that candidats should have a test in chassidus , to qualify as chassiddishe representants
If you want to challenge a candidate because he does not reside in CH, I don’t think this is the place to do it. You can do it in writting with your name, adress and phone and the evidence and give to Noochie Gross 555 Crown Street Apt 2D, Cell 718 755-2720 or Yisroel Sandhaus at 1394 Union Street, Cell 917 969-7516
Ron Vogel doesn’t live here in Crown Heights he Lives in Baltimore so why is he mixing in to our community issues we need local Lubavitchers to run not outsiders.
who was the one wearing a hat? I will vote for him and the one who had a normal haircutt, beard and white and black. seriously I don’t know any of them but I want a representative of our community to be the part and not CV be wearing a pink shirt and gold tie!! Is this what people want to make of lubavitch?? a mockery!!
He is the only one who can actually make a diffrence
go tatty!!!! i love you!!!!
No dirt, only fresh top soil.
You mean that they are going to start behaving like actual grown ups?? Wow, must be Moshiach Tziyt!
Nice of the incumbent Va’ad to invite the challengers! True achdus!
I don’t mean disrespect because I don’t know that person but shouldn’t there be a requirement for one to have a beard before he represents this Kan Tziva / Chassidic community?
sad to say these people are the problem. anyone from the past should not be allowed to run
