Halacha that women can’t vote for a “community council”?? Doesn’t the “community” include women AND men?? Aren’t the services that are offered in the community for women AND men?? Where in the Torah is this Halacha found? Please inform. Thanks.

The present Vaad looks like they can get things going, they were able to bring the two sides together for a din torah, any forward momevent in a positive direction is due to their efforts, let’s give them a full term and see if they have staying power for the future.

halacha.
why you dont put tefilin and wear pants?
consult your rov and mashpiah

What have they done?
April 28, 2010 6:29 am

What has the current Vaad and previous Vaad’s done for the community, I am not saying that they have not done anything, rather I am questioning if and what that is.
But what amazes me is that they don’t feel an obligation to the community to inform them of what they are doing, or have done.
Therefore my suggestion to whoever is elected that they should make a website which documents all their word so that the community can see if this body is worth all the fuss or not. Because right now, it seems. not too many people care.

Why 30?
April 28, 2010 6:21 am

Why do men have to be 30 years old to vote, how did that happen.
The Torah clearly considers a man at 20 for the army and for ‘Oinshin’.
Who decided 30?

shocked!!
April 28, 2010 5:29 am

As someone who doesn’t live in Crown Heights, I am shocked and appalled to find out that in this day and age, women are not allowed to vote in this election. Where does this rule come from and why is it allowed to stand? What happened to the extra measure of Bina that a woman has? Lubavitch, of all places, should not be a bastion of this kind of discrimination!!

If the New Vaad members are running I will vote for them

They are doing a good job helping people.

The best situation
April 28, 2010 1:24 am

is that everyone abides by the result of the election WHATEVER the results are. If you cant do that then you are the problem – YOU would be fighting the process of FAIR elections. – So whether or not new people run should be absolutely irrelevant -YOU should be writing an article tha says you will be strongly committed to whatever the RESULT is thats real peace when you force yourself to accept the majority opinion

The present Vaad
April 28, 2010 12:37 am

They are doing great things for the community. So, where is the problem?

It’s a shame the state attorney general doesn’t step in and say if women can’t vote and if you have to be over 30 and male to vote, then you discriminate, break the law and cannot have charitable status and IRS can say you don’t have tax deductible status. Since so many Lubavitchers admire me as a their leader, maybe I should lead a parade protest up and down kingston avenue.

I agree women should be able to vote as well and stating an age is good cuz it sets a boundry a limit for maturity but what the heck does married have to do with it?!!!
If a woman over 30 is not married she is still an immature giggling girl?
When does she get her place in society?
Oh I forgot unmarried women over 22 just HAVE no place in frum society. Frankly they just shouldnt exist.

and no I am not an unmarried WOMAN over 30!!

Reb Moishe,

You write to ask some one to step into a situation that has had an ongoing machlokes for ever.

WHY?

I have my micro community we have our own shul, why would I step into a role of ‘running’ some ones war?

I have no idea why COL would post this OP-ED
April 27, 2010 2:56 pm

but I also believe – as a few above have commented – that if people felt that there was an urgent need for a new vaad, they would run.

Truth is that most people (including me) care about the community but dont care about politician sides (like the author of this op-ed) so they look at the new Vaad, see that they’re working hard, see that they’re not corrupt, see that they’re getting new grants and providing new services, and they say, let them stay on.

I believe Moshe haber made a terrible mistake by claiming that his side faced a defensive battle. The truth is well known, his side was on the offensive since the former Vaad came into power. It’s no secret. But let’s treat the old concerns as bygone. The psak din and the directives of the beis din was our chance to clean the slate and mobe forward, heal and unite the Kehillah. This op-ed unfortunately shows that someone is still clinging to old disagreements and disaccord. If anyone will be machzik b’machloikes there will be no solution. I openly request those… Read more »

Good op-ed, but one crucial error: 3 out of 4 of the current Va’ad members ARE new faces with new talents who have shown their ability to move our community away from machlokes! And Chanina is indispensable in any Va’ad due to his political connections.

If you knew how much of their personal time, the current Vaad spends away from their families, maybe you would see why more people are not as unselfish and caring as the current Vaad. maybe they are not perfect but they are dedicated!!

The risk of running
April 27, 2010 10:06 am

I was asked by lots of my friends to run, and I believe that I can make a difference. so why won’t I run ? the reason why I will not run is sad but true. I have monitored the Vaad Hakohol elections for years, every time when there is someone who is “neutral” and a person that wants to run to help the community as soon as he is elected if he actually decides to do “anything” he and his family will get vilified and harassed not to mention the loshan hara on some web sites. so why would… Read more »

It is said that we get the government (in this case, community) we deserve. That being the case, woe upon us if we have to live with anything we’ve had till now…including the present bunch. As a woman I’m obviously ineligible to run, or even to vote (I guess we women really are second class citizens with no voice.) Someone approached my husband to run & I told him I will not agree. While it’s clear we need new & improved leadership (& we can’t stoop much lower than we have in the last 10 years) anyone who is a… Read more »

I’m not a feminist, but would it be so terrible in this day and age to open the board up to women over age 30 who are married? Or are we just a bunch of giggling brainless girls? Last time I checked this and every other Lubavitch website posted articles from shluchim who could not do their wife’s job while she was away at the shluchos kinus. I think there are quite a few competent and knowledgeable women who could clean up the vaad quite nicely. Between the numbers of teachers, bookkeepers, lawyers, accountants and many other professions the women… Read more »

Fix the process
April 27, 2010 7:48 am

There are a few things that I don’t understand about this process.

1. Why can’t women vote

2. Why can’t anybody over 20 vote?

3. Why isn’t there elections on a consistent basis?

4. Why isn’t there elections for Netzigim?

There are so many things wrong with this system, who would want to get involved?

You might not agree but you were chosen to perform a specific job and nothing else. As the saying goes az der eigener seichel misht zich arien, in other words when your personal opinions become a factor, the issue becomes clouded and serves your self interest. You shouldn’t favor one side, at least not in a public forum. You are entitled to your opinion, bur as a election committee member you should be entirely impartial. You have to leave your personal pnios at home.

I would run
April 27, 2010 7:44 am

If I felt there was a need or there was still a corrupt Vaad in power, but Politics aside (and I really hate politics) the current crop has really proven themselves in a short period of time and i’m happy for them to continue.

by the next election in three years (and yes, I believe the New Vadd wont try blocking an election) I will reassess and see who to vote for then.

Present Vaad.
April 27, 2010 7:38 am

There is no way that I will vote for the present Vaad.
I wish i had the ability to run, but i don’t.

I beg to differ with the op-ed writer. With all due respect, the writer unabashedly claims that his side fought a defensive war for the past seven years. The truth is actually the opposite. Most of the shchunah was unaware or not interested in what was occuring. There came a time where elections were due to be held where the charade was exposed. You can’t be surprised by the indifference of the community towards these elections. Especially when the writer of this op-ed hinted in his piece that the blame rests with the other side. These elections were meant to… Read more »

A certain side in this matter created an atmosphere where corruption reigns. No transparency, unilateral rulings that favor one side. Dirty politics that resulted in democracy being quashed in the neighborhood. You don’t understand where such actions led?
