Bochurim at the Yeshiva Gedola Zal of Oholei Torah Educational Institute in Crown Heights were warned against attending the 9th annual Chinese Auction of KSCVK.
While official learning on Motzoei Shabbos ends at 9 pm, the bochurim face expulsion if they partake in the event held in the school’s ballroom downstairs.
“No bochurim are allowed to attend this event – even for a short period,” a sign in English and Hebrew read. “Whoever will be at this event will not be allowed back into Yeshiva.”
Keren Simchas Chosson V’Kallah (KSCVK), which helps and coordinates Crown Heights weddings, is holding a special program this year for young adults that will run parallel to their regular auction program.
Bar Mitzvah boys through 17 years-old are invited to attend on Motzei Shabbos, January 30th. Girls in grade 6 through 8 will join the women’s crowd on Sunday, January 31.
These two groups will be able to watch the main event – featuring mind reader Mark Salem – via live broadcast.
“Girls and boys will be allowed into the main prize room but due to the atmosphere of the evening, they will not be allowed in the dining area,” KSCVK told COLlive.com.
They said adults will be carded and asked that participants bring proper ID. “Strict adherence to Halacha will be maintained at all times,” they added.

Do you want YOUR son/daughter in a store that is known for drug selling? Even if they are “only” buying a soda or a bag of chips? What about the danger of a deal gone bad and a shooting – won’t you be the first to scream why in heaven’s name the school allowed students to shop there??

As a member of a yeshiva Hanhola I will NOT educate your child about drugs. Likewise, I follow the guidance of shulchan oruch that a place of avoda zora or znus is BANNED. No, I won’t teach your child about avoda zorah or znus. Sorry, but that’s not part of his chinuch.

this method of education was effective once, but no longer. todays influences are invasive and reach all of our children, no matter how hard we try to shield them. when we educate them we give them the tools to stay strong in the face of all the shtus they deal with.
the grocery is not the only place they can get drugs, and banning it is not protecting the bochurim from ever using drugs, ch”v. educating them about drug abuse is proven to be the most effective prevention.
a yeshiva h as every right to make rules about where and what they permit their boys to attend. KSCVK fully appreciates and respects the Yeshiva’s decision. BUT- the auction committee contacted the yeshivos months ago about when and where they would be able to host the boys auction event. they also asked the yeshivos at the begining of LAST WEEK for boys to help out and were happily PROVIDED WITH VOLUNTEERS BY THE YESHIVA. As an outsider, let me assure your readers that Hanhalas have the best interest of the talmidim in mind whenever they issue rules or proclamations. They are in the trenches and are in the best position to know what is really going on with the bochurim. As an example, in our yeshiva we recently made a rule that bochurim cannot enter a certain retail food store near the yeshiva – or be expelled. It all depends on the personality of the bochur. If he is steeped in constant learning, then fine, he shouldn’t go to the Auction. If he’s a half learner and half chiller, let the kid go for cryin’ out loud!!!! I’ve seen the results of those half time learners being squeezed out of the yeshiva system, and believe me, you wouldn’t want to be their parents. A small turnoff leads to humongous problems at home to the point of delinquency and the local precinct.
Alcohol is/was being served in main dining room..Therefore children are not allowed in.

Reading some of the comments written here, (and mostly by parents I dare suggest,) leaves one with little surprise @ the level of respect that children/bochrim today exhibit for their yeshivos and hanholos.
Does anyone even know the reason behind this decision?!?!.
And even if we understood the logic behind this “decree”, cant we show a little backbone and support the decision of the people WE chose to entrust with the education of our children instead of opposing it?!
well said 52, indeed criticizing any hanhala or any teacher in front of the child is the most dammaging thing a parent can do to his child for the rest of his life. on top of it this is a big chilul HaShem. if you have another opinion go and talk about in a civilized mannre with the hanhala. do not ruin it for everyone else. the majority does stand by the hanhala.
whether the hanholo are right or wrong, lets all give a little extra this year. Devorah bought food and prizes for the kids and zal and suddenly was left stranded.

Morristown is NO better!! By Chanukah break R’ Spalter announced anyone going Skiing will get kicked out. Skiing happens to be the most tzniyus sport!!! When yeshiva’s make stupid dumb rules it turns the bochurim off. Pick the right fights not the stupid ones and you will see success! Bochurim respect normal rules or even ones that they don’t agree with 100 percent. But ones that don’t make any sense bochurim don’t respect and lose respect for the hanhala/yeshiva when they make such rules.

This event might “pas nisht” for chasidishe bochrim but that is up to bochrim to discuss it with their mashpia! It’s not for hanholo to make such a strict ban! There are much worse things which bochrim get up to and this is a much better thing for bochrim to be doing! Why don’t they ban bochrim hanging out in manhattan? Or going out to restaurants!
my son just came home from night seder and was told they were not allowed to go either. It’s 8:45 on Motzei Shabbos. What would be appropriate for boys this age? Some of the other boys in his class hop on a train and go into the city. I certainly don’t want him doing that…
first of all why is this a public discussion? The hanhola made a decision; if you don’t agree a parent can ask for clarification not a bochur. A bochur that wants to give tzdaka can give tzdoka. They can order on line (as we see everyone has access to the internet somehow). The reason we are losing so many kids is because of parents like these who bash the hanhola publically and expect our kids to respect the hanhola. To the well-tp-dp father. While you certainly have a valid point, this would be best addressed to the Hanhala themselves, for your child’s benefit, as well as for the benefit of every child who reads these comments. Whether the school is right or wrong, an attitude of “I have money and influence and therefore my child can do what he wants” is ultimately what causes the most damage. This has to come from the bochur himself; it cannot be imposed from above. If it is, than it is worthless.
I’m curious to know how it is that so many of the students in this yeshiva have access to internet, to be reading and commenting on this. I know when I was in seminary, internet was a strict no-no. (I know there are ways everywhere for them to find how to get online, as young people will do, but this is like blatant!) your not in yisheeva so you have no say in the matter! as bocherim we are in yisheeva the WHOLE day, everyday. we have no days off and no half days. so why cant we just have a little fun once and go to a auction, yisheeva has no write to stop us from going to a kosher auction AFTER seder!

It is the job of administration to set policy of a school and that right must be supported whether we agree with it or not. This is what the Rebbe said. If you do not agree or fail to understand hanholos rules and cannot be quiet about it then do everyone a favor and take your kid out. Why would anyone wanna go to this auction at risk of expulsion, when they can go clubbing in manhattan?! It’s much more fun – granted, more expensive – but you certainly won’t risk getting expelled!
This is one of their most ridiculous rules. What are they thinking? What’s their reason? BUT it is an OT decision & I will tell my son to abide by it. Just because it’s insane doesn’t mean a Bochur should disregard it. The Yeshiva decides what is appropriate. Having said that, they’d better agree to my request for extra time off before Pesach. I was privileged to spend a year in OT. The Yeshiva enabled me to grow in learning, chasidishkeit and as a person more than ever before. Thank G-d I decided to spend an extra (second) year in O.T. of more Torah studying and learning from the Mechanchim – personalities that impress and inspire me till today. I appreciated the discipline, constant tests and rules as they gave me support and created a positive environment. I admire the Hanholoh of OT for dedicating their lives to Chinuch. While the decision by hanholo might be confusing, the bochurim have to listen to them just because they are hanholo. When people, and especially parents, get involved in disagreeing with yeshiva decisions, this sends a mixed message to the bochur and creates a disrespect toward the hanholo so that in the future, all of their decisions will be ridiculed. The decision was made, don’t argue. The bochurim have chosen to learn there and subject themselves to OT’s rules. It’s embarrassing that this is headline news
this is such a non-issue. it’s funny to see everyone all riled up about nothing. the yeshivah has rules, some of which many people will disagree with, but to run this into an “us against them” is a sign of a slow news day…

It seems that this program interferes with Motzei Shabbos seder.
There is no reason why any self respecting yeshiva should allow bochrim to attend events during seder.
Yeshivos are academic institutions, and OT is THE flagship Lubavitch yeshiva. If you don’t want to learn, don’t sign up for OT.

Unfortunately, this is why people are having a hard time finding a shidduch. They are forced to only interact with a guy or girl in a shidduch dating scene, and when it comes to something as innocent as an auction, the system right away tries to separate guys and girls from meeting each other.

OT is a great Yeshiva and produces great bochrim – no need to bash it just because you don’t agree with their decision

These Rosh Yeshivas have no idea what they are doing to the boys over there. I know boys who attend Yeshivas elsewhere (Yes I’m a rebel) and by locking those bored souls up day and night makes them want to go do wrong things. And then people wonder why half of the Religious population these days are “bumming out.” STOP BEING SO STRICT ABOUT EVERYTHING!! It is perfectly normal for the boys to go to the auction. ROSH YESHIVAS- OPEN YOUR EYES C WHAT UR DOING.

Many boys come to help out at the auction. The entertainment is kosher as well. What is the hanhala thinking? One day when they may need Devorah Benjamin I hope she will remember how wonderful they were to her and return the same to them. You are not producing a Zal of major learners give them a break. Hanala should get a life and go and check out the auction before making such drastic statements.
Some bochurim from my son’s class,a number of years, ago went to black Friday sales. When the yeshiva found out, they were expelled. These men are not frum today. Yeshivas should not expel students.

If this Yeshiva has its rules, then so be it. The boys will grow up more G-d fearing, more tmimiyisdik etc… Kol Hakovod!!!! If they were attending Russian yeshivas, they’d be lucky to shop for bubble gum at the corner store.

How ridiculous can you get? One of the finest (if not the #1) tzedokah organization in CH. A totally “kosher” event for a worthy cause. Why shouldn’t the bochurim be allowed to go after seder? If they have problems with the event, why are they allowing it in OT at all?
I agree that Yeshiva bochurim should have a limit to a certain extent such as cigarettes,non kosher music, supervision…but this is to much!You cannot put the fact that u r not allowing young guys to go to a program under, ‘halacha’! that is not halacha that is just plain pathetic

I am not shocked by the notice, since it fits the bullying mentality of many individuals who work in the yeshiva system.
Unfortunately, yeshiva students are not treated appropriately and the hanhala is more interested in control than they are in actually providing a quality education.
Great way to keep the bochurim motivated!

Should they be tought how to be chassidim in “real life” not just sitting in Yeshiva learning all day for 10 years then go out in to the world of reality to not be able to keep it up.

Why shouldnt they attend? they have to be glued to a sefer every second of the day? this is a beautiful event, a positive kosher atmosphere, plus its for tzedakah. What more do you want???
