61,893 votes from around the world have chosen 10 semifinalists for A Jewish Star singing competition out of 26 auditions.
A Jewish Star announced Thursday 10 semifinalists in the singing competition that has captured the imagination of thousands around the world.
Over 50 auditions came in to the contest presented by COLlive.com and Soul II Soul, an organization for the education of children with special needs.
26 contestants were presented online for viewing and voting over the past months, creating much buzz within the Jewish music industry.
"I think it's amazing that you are giving young people a chance to connect to Torah and Jewish music," said legendary composer and singer Yossi Green.
By Sunday, January 24, 2010 - the date ending the initial audition period - some 61,893 votes were counted on contestants that hailed from Brooklyn, Azerbaijan, California, France and more.
A Jewish Star judges Avraham Fried, Mendy Pellin and Michael Sojcher will choose three finalists from your top ten.
The three finalists will perform at the Soul II Soul concert on March 7, 2010 in Brooklyn, NY.
The contestants are listed in order of amount of votes, starting from ten up to number one who received the highest votes.

I liked Shmuly Rimler too but maybe the reason he and some others did not make it is because they didn't get the word out to people to vote - remember, it's a purely numbers game at this stage. Also maybe because they didn't use everything at their disposal in their favor. The public does not always recognize the difference between a well produced voice and a naturally rich one. American idol, you will note, has the competitors competing on even ground at all times, like on the opening round none of them are allowed music or effects of any sort - which gives a truer picture. Maybe jewish star will follow suite in upcoming years, but for now the rules expressly allow for pro produced submissions and the smarter path for a contestant is to use all allowable tools in your favor - wouldn't you? I would.

How does 10/24 make sense? That's not top ten, that's just top half, or anyone above average. The top five in this list is a much better representation of who is outstanding.

I agree. People are missing that this was determined by popular vote. No bearing necessarily on who is better than who. Whether or not you agree with how Jewish Star chose to determine the top 10, they were very clear that it would be based ONLY on votes for the top 10. So who you think is best - or even who the JUDGES think is best, is irrelevent because they are going purely by numbers here, which is exactly what they said they would do for this stage from the start.

This top ten is based on VOTES ONLY not on any professional opinion from any one. Whoever campaigned and worked hard on getting the vote made it. the next stage has NOTHING TO DO WITH VOTE but everything to do with professional opinion. So the number of cousins, uncles, and freinds WILL NOT MATTER for the next stage. In my humble opinion it will be: Ohayon, Gruntblat, and of course Gershon (not necessarily in that order). On stage they will be judged based on their live performance which will bring this to a whole new level. since we have not seen them live it is hard to predict who will be number one.

you are right, it is a numbers game. Thsoe who have a huge network of friiends family etc got the highest votes. note the 2 cousins up there. but the question is, there are people up there who voally are not on the same league as some that did not make it to the top 10. those people, even thought they are more talented, got left behind. so what kind of a contest is this? i think to be fair to all the contestants, the judges should review EVERY contestant, and then post comments. plus they should make 2 more "judges pick", from those not in the top 10, and add them to the top 10. making 12. this will give contestants who do not have a huge family, but are good vocally a chance. then out of the 12 pick the 3.

The contest was set up with rules. They did not say top 10 per say but they did say that the judges will chose from the top vote getters.
Just because someone lives far away does not mean that they don't have anetwork through family or face book freinds (not only people from Crown Heights vote). It could be that alot of teh good ones got extra votes besides family etc.
I disagree the the top ten are in correct order based on votes. As you will se who the judges will pick and it will be clear whom they professionaly think are deserving.
The organizers of teh concert can chose whoever they like to come on stage regardless of teh competition just like they can chose which famus singer would come to teh event.....

Without doubt, Moshe Lehr is the most entertaining, and has a real sweet voice-for all those of you complaining about fancy music videos to hide true voice, Moshe didnt do that! Number 2 Shuky Sadon has the nicest voice!!! And thats it! BSB has a really really amazing voive! He just doesnt show it here....not sure what he was trying to do in this video!!!! But if you heard his voice outside this competition, it really is one of the nicest voices I've heard!! And those, in my humble opinion, should be the 3 finalists!

Everyone, calm down. It is both: Lots of family and freinds voted for "their" guy and lots of objective people voted objectiveley (although not many of those). The good ones ended up with both and the bad ones only with "their" votes. It is however hard to estimate how much of "their" vote each person got. Which is why it is great that the judges will choose who they believe are the best.
I liked most of the ones who were chosen as top ten but I don't believe in the order. I don't think Choni Gruntblat is better than Gershon, Sadon, or Ohayon. In fact Gershon (in my opinion) is the best. Sadon is great too. Coni is nice. I would have loved to see Shmueli make it.... and a few others. BSB, for example, was not that good but he got in due to his freinds/family (again my opinion). I believe that the judges will prove me right. Lets wait and see :)

You Should here him live, he is truly talented. what a voice! #1 he has the richest voice #2 it is different than most singers ( most of the other singers sound just like the rest of the singers out there, it is nice to hear a different style) #3 original song - most of these other contestants would have a very hard time singing it. plus he is a great performer and can sing many diffrent styles of music - not just chazzonus

YISROEL KOCH original compositions with gentle soul so soothing to listen to . the fact that he has a guitar in his tool box only adds. he's very musical, but i think he just need to learn how to use his voice correctly, but I do like his voice
SHUKY SADON: classic Quality with promise but needs to find out what about his personality is unique that he could contribute to his singing.{He sounds like Avraham fried , which is good, but I'll bet he could find a way to stand out for something that only he has.}He is musically inclined though and I find it pleasant to listen to him.
Avraham Ohayon: He is unique But a Classic, His voice is relaxing to listen to. I cant put a pin on it but He just Has something I like about his singing A little bit of voice lessons would only do him good.
Boruch sholom Blesofsky he'se unique, His style is energizing, the arrangement was creative, His voice is nice, and he is singing from himself and not imitating anyone, he's new. And I'll bet he could do various styles from himself and interpet songs to suitable styles fluently.
Yermi Udkoff He has honey in his voice and reminds me of a soothing cello he is a classic and not just a trendy come and go.Musical.You could feel his heart when he sings. But he either needs to learn about rhythm or breath control. both wont hurt though.He looks promising.
Shmuli Stiefel Defiantly has a sound I've never heard before: which is Great ! You could see He'se leaning toward the Chazzanus style but it wouldn't hurt him to sing some other repoirtore. His sound is unwordly, I cant find any good comparison to interpet the experience of listening to him in my mind. But something pulls me towards it.
Choni Grunblatt His sound is alot like Shloime Gertner which is sweet and sincere. But he still has something that is him. Music is supposed to uplift and energize. His defiantly does that.
Tzvi Russel nice voice and knows how to improvise to make his own twists in the song but in an aidel tasteful way. He is inspiring.
There are also others that I like and think they could make it in the business but the above stood out for me. some nice vioces are: Shmuly Rimler. (gorgeous range...) Gershon Shapiro. Avremel Blesofsky. Nissan Brenenson. Binyamin moshe.

On the Jewish Star website it states as follows: “and the top vote-getters will then be reviewed by the contest judges, who will choose three finalists.”
I understand that to mean; Regardless of what the votes are, the JUDGES will choose a contestant! Basically, there is no connection between who the JUDGES choose and how many votes a contestant got. Case in point, where is the vote tally? Contestants were encouraged to make recordings and video’s but no mention or encouragement to “get votes.’
The Finalist have NOTHING to do with the voting they were all picked by the JUDGES!

I listened to quite a nice amount of voices over and over again and I came to the conclusion that 1)Shmuli Stiefel definately has the most real voice! We're talking about natural sound, power, keys most people can't hit, keeping a tune in an EXTEREMLY difficult song (kol hakavod in challenging yourself to such a song, you did great), I can also see some good stage skills involved overthere (handmotions, smiling, etc. all very important for a concert), P.S. I am not a tremendous fan of chazzonus,(nor am I related to him) but this guy is something else! 2)Next would be Chony grunblatt. Also very talented and uses his voice well. 3) the rest maybe alright, but I'm not sure if I would bother buying such music or even putting it on my iPod! Except for BS Blesofsky but him too I did not have enough time to judge just from the first 30 seconds. maybe the judges should have him SING I mean SING a FULL song in order to be able to properly judge his voice. (the rest don't quite appeal to me).

the next stage has NOTHING TO DO WITH VOTE but everything to do with professional opinion.
So the number of cousins, uncles, and freinds WILL NOT MATTER for the next stage.
In my humble opinion it will be: Ohayon, Gruntblat, and of course Gershon (not necessarily in that order).
On stage they will be judged based on their live performance which will bring this to a whole new level. since we have not seen them live it is hard to predict who will be number one.
but the question is, there are people up there who voally are not on the same league as some that did not make it to the top 10.
those people, even thought they are more talented, got left behind.
so what kind of a contest is this?
i think to be fair to all the contestants, the judges should review EVERY contestant, and then post comments. plus they should make 2 more "judges pick", from those not in the top 10, and add them to the top 10. making 12. this will give contestants who do not have a huge family, but are good vocally a chance.
then out of the 12 pick the 3.
making your biggest bro proud!

Just because someone lives far away does not mean that they don't have anetwork through family or face book freinds (not only people from Crown Heights vote). It could be that alot of teh good ones got extra votes besides family etc.
I disagree the the top ten are in correct order based on votes. As you will se who the judges will pick and it will be clear whom they professionaly think are deserving.
The organizers of teh concert can chose whoever they like to come on stage regardless of teh competition just like they can chose which famus singer would come to teh event.....
BSB has a really really amazing voive! He just doesnt show it here....not sure what he was trying to do in this video!!!! But if you heard his voice outside this competition, it really is one of the nicest voices I've heard!!
And those, in my humble opinion, should be the 3 finalists!

That's not to say the others weren't as good, but he is definitely top 3 material. I'm rooting for him to win. What a voice! I'd love to hear him sing a Niggun, though.
Look at the 3 with the most votes. Why would the guys that sing the best also happen to be the most popular? Cmon, you can get your network of ppl to vote for you up until a certain point. After that it's up to the rest of the people and depends on whether you are good or not. The 3 with the top votes definitely deserve to be there based on pure talent. I voted for ALL the contestants,and I'm related to NONE of them.I never even knew any of them EXISTED before this compeition. I've judged them INDIVIDUALLY based on what I feel is vocal talent!
Iv'e read ALL the comments during my freed up time and I've seen people have MANY DIFFERENT OPINIONS and IDEAS of what vocal talent is! so I believe that the top ten REALLY ARE the top ten based on the votes of MANY PEOPLE with VARIOUS OPINIONS!
People DO VOTE for people even if they ARE NOT FAMILY!
There is a WHOLE LOT OF PEOPLE INTERESTED IN THIS COMPETITION EVEN IF THEY ARE NOT FAMILY!

It is however hard to estimate how much of "their" vote each person got. Which is why it is great that the judges will choose who they believe are the best.
I liked most of the ones who were chosen as top ten but I don't believe in the order. I don't think Choni Gruntblat is better than Gershon, Sadon, or Ohayon. In fact Gershon (in my opinion) is the best. Sadon is great too. Coni is nice. I would have loved to see Shmueli make it.... and a few others. BSB, for example, was not that good but he got in due to his freinds/family (again my opinion). I believe that the judges will prove me right. Lets wait and see :)
#1 he has the richest voice
#2 it is different than most singers ( most of the other singers sound just like the rest of the singers out there, it is nice to hear a different style)
#3 original song - most of these other contestants would have a very hard time singing it.
plus he is a great performer and can sing many diffrent styles of music - not just chazzonus
original compositions with gentle soul so soothing to listen to . the fact that he has a guitar in his tool box only adds. he's very musical, but i think he just need to learn how to use his voice correctly, but I do like his voice
SHUKY SADON:
classic Quality with promise but needs to find out what about his personality is unique that he could contribute to his singing.{He sounds like Avraham fried , which is good, but I'll bet he could find a way to stand out for something that only he has.}He is musically inclined though and I find it pleasant to listen to him.
Avraham Ohayon:
He is unique But a Classic, His voice is relaxing to listen to. I cant put a pin on it but He just Has something I like about his singing A little bit of voice lessons would only do him good.
Boruch sholom Blesofsky
he'se unique, His style is energizing, the arrangement was creative, His voice is nice, and he is singing from himself and not imitating anyone, he's new. And I'll bet he could do various styles from himself and interpet songs to suitable styles fluently.
Yermi Udkoff
He has honey in his voice and reminds me of a soothing cello he is a classic and not just a trendy come and go.Musical.You could feel his heart when he sings. But he either needs to learn about rhythm or breath control. both wont hurt though.He looks promising.
Shmuli Stiefel
Defiantly has a sound I've never heard before: which is Great ! You could see He'se leaning toward the Chazzanus style but it wouldn't hurt him to sing some other repoirtore. His sound is unwordly, I cant find any good comparison to interpet the experience of listening to him in my mind. But something pulls me towards it.
Choni Grunblatt
His sound is alot like Shloime Gertner which is sweet and sincere. But he still has something that is him. Music is supposed to uplift and energize. His defiantly does that.
Tzvi Russel
nice voice and knows how to improvise to make his own twists in the song but in an aidel tasteful way. He is inspiring.
There are also others that I like and think they could make it in the business but the above stood out for me. some nice vioces are: Shmuly Rimler. (gorgeous range...) Gershon Shapiro. Avremel Blesofsky. Nissan Brenenson. Binyamin moshe.
Avremel Blesofky should be there too.

I understand that to mean; Regardless of what the votes are, the JUDGES will choose a contestant! Basically, there is no connection between who the JUDGES choose and how many votes a contestant got. Case in point, where is the vote tally? Contestants were encouraged to make recordings and video’s but no mention or encouragement to “get votes.’
The Finalist have NOTHING to do with the voting they were all picked by the JUDGES!

3) the rest maybe alright, but I'm not sure if I would bother buying such music or even putting it on my iPod! Except for BS Blesofsky but him too I did not have enough time to judge just from the first 30 seconds. maybe the judges should have him SING I mean SING a FULL song in order to be able to properly judge his voice.
(the rest don't quite appeal to me).
