A long-time resident of Crown Heights, father of 9 children, has been diagnosed with kidney failure and is in desperate need of a kidney transplant to keep him alive.
If you are in good health and blood type A or O you may be the one to give him a new lease on life. He needs your help to find his match.
You could be his donor or a potential match for one of the other 94 Jews on Renewal’s waiting list who are searching for the gift of life.
All it takes to see if you are a match is a non-obligatory health screening and blood test.
Please come out and be tested in support of our fellow community member.

(from kidney.org) Can smokers be living donors? Smoking is considered a risk to the potential donor. Because smoking damages the lungs, it may put the donor at a higher risk of developing pneumonia after surgery. Potential donors should be honest with the transplant center about smoking habits to ensure that the donation and transplant are successful. Different transplant centers have different policies regarding smoking and living donation. Living donors may be asked to quit smoking prior to the donation, and if the person is a heavy smoker, he or she might be asked to see a pulmonary doctor to check… Read more »
yes
if you smoke would that disqualify you from donating?
Many patients have whats called antibodies, which makes it very difficult to find a donor that their bloods agree with each other (many parents/children even though they have the same blood type, they are not compatible to receive their kidneys due to high antibodies, so these types of patients have a real hard time finding a match, therefore it is even more urgent to screen many potential donors).
Thanks for your willingness to guide. You can come to the drive and meet with people.
Or, a worried potential donor can call Rabbi Simon, to find out what it was like. (I’m not Rabbi Simon to volunteer his time, put I’m pretty sure he wouldn’t mind).
To address some concerns of people afraid, if one day a relative of theirs will need a kidney after they donated theirs to a non relative…: From all of your offspring, only a small portion of them will be compatible with you anyhow, due to varying blood types, etc. so it is very unlikely that one of your COMPATIBLE relatives will have kidney failure, while you’re in a condition to donate. Also, I’m sure if you donate a kidney, renewal will put your mishpocho at the top of the list, if your mishpocho will G-D forbid ever require their services.… Read more »
