The Sasonkin family is facing a horrifying medical and emotional situation as their 8-month-old son was diagnosed with a rare infection.
Moshe Sasonkin, the youngest of 5 children who live in Crown Heights, was a happy and active child up until three weeks ago.
Upon his birth, his proud parents R’ Nachum Sasonkin and his wife Dina held a Bris ceremony and received many blessings for a long and healthy life.
Nachumi himself is grateful for all he has in his life, as just 15 years ago he was declared brain dead following the Brooklyn Bridge shooting.
But after years of physical therapy, he had a remarkable recovery, pursuing rabbinical studies and living with a bullet in his brain.
But this past month Nachumi and Dina were dealing with a more recent crisis: their son Moshe was suddenly attacked by a virulent infection.
20 doctors from all relevant units – hematology, pediatrics, oncology, orthopedics, infectious diseases, burn care specialists, plastic surgeons, intensive care specialists – were present at his consultation.
The head physician said, “Between us we must have 300 years of experience, but we’ve never seen anything like this.”
They ruled that the situation will necessitate the amputation of both of Moshe’s arms, one leg and most of the other foot.
The procedure took place Tuesday, 21 Kislev.
“Moshe has a long road of treatment and recovery ahead of him,” the parents wrote to COLlive.com in an email.
“He needs a lot of therapy, prosthesis, medical equipment, and more – all of which will cost an exorbitant amount.”
How can you help? By easing the financial burden on this family that is already dealing with so much.

If you don’t have great insurance, get hooked up with Shriner’s Hospitals; they’re all over–the closest may be in Phily. They give free service and prosthetics and therapy. Other than that, definately speak with a social worker regarding getting on Medicaid and SSI special benefits for disabled children.
you are right… to
12# how do you know what is her full name?
Sorry, but didn’t you know that a doctor gets his abilities from Hashem? Tehillim isn’t just ‘nice’: It’s THE KEY TO GEULAH!!! AD MOSAI!!!!!!!!!!
P.S. Sasonkins, family, friends of the Sasonkins: My heart goes out for you. I will daven for your Moshe, and know that we share your pain: KOL YISRAEL AREIVIM ZE BAZE!
to all the people who already agreed to say tehillim-namely, numbers 11,12,31,39,45 and 70. (and #4 but that’s me so I can’t thank myself ) I know it doesn’t mean much to call you by a number, but if you’re reading this then you know who you are.
If anyone else is able to say any more, please do 🙂
And if you already agreed and you forget or don’t have time and miss a day (or even more) that doesn’t mean you should give up on trying…anything you can say counts!
Hashem Yishmor!! Only good news for the family.
to the family member of this gorgeous baby,
Check out http://www.cameronclapp.com , a teenager who lost 3 limbs and became an athtlete and counsels other amputees. maybe this can help them in the long journey ahead.

is it his whole arms and legs or hands and feet?
Do you know what strain of bacteria it was? There is also a reaction to antibiotics used to treat infections that causes the equivalent of massive burns on the skin. The entire skin blisters and huge losses of tissue occurs. This reaction is often deadly. The immunization is for a type of bacterial meningitis that causes massive vascular clotting due to toxins released by the bacteria as it rapidly reproduces. If someone is exposed to that, they are usually given the vaccine and the state of NJ mandates it for all incoming college freshmen.
That is not what happened to Moishe.
There is NO immunization against the infection he got.
i cant stop looking at his picture of his little hands, tiny baby hands which his parents will no longer see. They must have kissed his hands a thousand times before the operation.
There are non-Jews who would contribute to such a tragic case. Maybe it should be publicized in the general media. Also #59, it isn’t a virus, it is a virulent infection caused by a bacteria that quickly multiplies, produces toxins, and then causes the blood to clot in all the smaller blood vessels, thus causing death to tissue in fingers and toes. In the case of this child, it went beyond the digits into the limbs. There is an immunization to one type of infection like this but this boy may have been too young for it.
I cant even fathom such a tragedy …. May hashem give you all the strength you need and more …
What kind of virus was this ? I have never heard of anyting like this. Mond you neither did all those Dr’s. Is this something that is preventable ? Immunizations ? etc …. Thank you for any info anyone can share.
Also , there are several of us here in Canada that want to donate. Is their a way to get a canadian tax receipt.

Hashem AD MOSAI!!!
Please stop the suffering…we can’t take it anymore!!!
As far as HACHLOTOS, someone recently suggested to me, when I voiced my thoughts that “if only we had peace in the community of CH, Moshiach would probably come,” that we should each just look for the good in everyone and not worry or point at anyone else. I took her words to heart, as she gave it over in a very beautiful, non-critical way. I think if we can just at least try and spread that message and do our best…Yechi HaMelech…Moshiach NOW!!!
Is there someone who can be contacted to find out if supper can be made for the family or if any help is needed with the children
we are all with you and feeling for you even though we are not calling we are thinking about u and your family may hashem give you the koichos and bitachon to carry on.,,,
why specifically for 40 days?
In my mind, this conjures up horrific memories of the Holocaust and Israeli bus bombings – except that in this case, it is not through man and terror, but by the hands of heaven. To me, it is no less horrifying and it is just as impossible to comprehend in any way. This has wrecked my day(s). Here’s a comment to Hashem: Cut it out!! Just get that geulah shleima here right now!! Skip this torture; have we not suffered far more than enough?!?!? Dovid haMelech wrote, “Why should the nations say, ‘Where is your G-d?'” But we have now… Read more »

Yes she is a Gottlieb…the one that lost a sister last year…
i will say yom gimmel
I was not chas v’sholom trying to be negative, but the article implied amputation was in the immediate future, not that it had been done. I thought maybe there is some doctor somewhere willing to try some different solution, but obviously it was not possible.
I apologize for causing you pain. I have added the baby to my Tehillim list & I am sending a check to help with the costs. I am sorry I can’t find the right words, but I pray Hashem gives you all strength.
Signed, #9
Is dina a gottlieb? chaya gottlieb a’h’s sister? How much Hashem?!
We need more Tehillim! (You can ask other people you know too….)
the prosthesis are now wired into body and brain-controlled – the challenge is to learn to control them. I am thinking the small child should do better job learning that. How many times they would have to be changed as he grows … we are talking here enormous money. In any case, they get more advanced every year (and more expensive too). I did not want to sound cynical – I do feel very sad – I just wanted to say there are certain hopes for certain things – but the money are badly needed.
We MUST daven!!! beg and demand from hahsme that this is NOT OKAY!! we need moshiach now!!
We need Moshiach now! I am donating and hope everyone else will as well.
550 Rockaway Ave. Valley Stream, NY 11581 this is his brother in laws chabad house. depending on where you are im sure you can get it to the family someway or anohter.
ABOUT 6 MONTHS AGO, I SAW AN OPRAH WINFREY SHOW ABOUT A WOMEN WHO HAD A SIMILAR INFECTION. SHE DID LOSE LIMBS BUT RETURNED TO HEALTH AND MOTHERS HER 2 CHILDREN. SHE GOT THIS INFECTION RIGHT AFTER THE BIRTH OF HER SECOND CHILD. THAT SHOW KEEPS RECORDS.
Horrifically heart breaking article
Dina and Nochum, we are davening and crying with you. May Hashem grant him and you the speedy Yeshua and the koach to deal with your situation.
To #9
the amputations of both hands and feet were already done. OF COURSE this was their LAST resort. THERE WAS NO OTHER OPTION. What they need now is everyone’s Tehillim and financial support. May Hashem bring an end to this dark and bitter golus now!!!
its just not fair!!!!!!!!!!!
can someone collect or is there a ch location i can drop it off at?
I remember reading in the Hamodia an interview with a doctor in Israel who healed people while preventing amputation. Try to get hold of a center or askan that can help, I know that there is a center in Israel called Refa’ainu, perhaps they would know the name of this doctor. Wishing the baby a complete refuah sheleima now!
simply horrifying….
NOT FAIR. WHY WHY WHY?????? I cant imagine how traumatic this will be for the older children too!!! MOSHIACH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
this is just so so so sad
i gave $18
