The Rubashkin family has announced Thursday that it will retain the services of Nathan Lewin to lead the appeals of Sholom Mordechai Rubashkin.
The family is working in close cooperation with a legal committee of attorneys including Professor Aaron Twerski, Irving Seidman, Robert Simins and Jeff Schwartz.
Nathan Lewin ranks among the top appellate attorneys in the United States. He represented Congressmen and white-collar criminal cases, and is the only lawyer who represented an Attorney General in a criminal investigation while the Attorney General was in office.
Mr. Lewin has argued in every federal appellate circuit in the country. He has presented 27 cases—many of them criminal—in the U.S. Supreme Court, and is also known for taking on Jewish causes in the Supreme Court.
The original legal team, Guy Cook and Montgomery Brown will continue to represent Rubashkin.
Lawyers have also been retained to represent Agriprocessors and R’ Avrohom Aron Rubashkin facing a separate trial in the Iowa State Case. The legal team will appeal both Sholom’s incarceration pending sentence, and the credibility of the charges and the trial.
Significant funds must be raised for the legal defense. To that purpose, a Committee of Concerned Anash for Pidyon Shevuyim has been formed under the aegis of the NCFJE Legal Defense Fund.
At a recent community event, Leah Rubashkin described the ordeals of her husband who has been denied bail while awaiting sentencing (watch COLlive’s exclusive video).
The trials and tribulations that he and his family endure have evoked a strong desire within the community to reach out and help effect a reversal in this situation.
Readers, members of Anash, friends, neighbors: this is truly a case of pidyon shevuyim and your tzedaka is critical.

I hope that at this point you already realized that this is a terrible mistake. I believe that the word you are looking for is OBTAIN.
Nat Lewin was the Rebbe’s lawyer! He helped us win Hey teves!
Too bad this isn’t a Menorah case that Nat Lewin is the specialist in, but at least it deals with similar themes – freedom and light over darkness.
