Some people in Postville are doing what they can to get Sholom Mordechai Rubashkin released from jail.
Rubashkin was found guilty of 86 charges of financial fraud earlier this month. He’s remained in jail ever since, facing possible sentencing of 1200 years.
Last Thursday, a federal judge dismissed 72 immigration charges saying it would have ”no impact” on his prison time. The judge also ruled he must stay in jail until sentencing, which has not been set.
Supporters of Sholom Rubashkin put out yard signs, upset the judge ordered him to stay in jail.
“I believe the reason people put out signs on the lawn is because a lot of people in Postville care about Sholom Rubashkin and want to show him and his family support and would really like to see him out on bail,” said Rashi Raices.
The signs say “Send Sholom Home” with a photo of Rubashkin and an American flag as the background.
Father Lloyd Paul Ouderkirk with St. Bridget Church in Postville said the signs are inappropriate.
“The spotlight is on the wrong person. He is a convicted criminal. He’s where he should be,” said Father Ouderkirk.
He said the real victims are the former workers.
“We still have 11 mothers with ankle monitors on for two years. That’s injustice,” he said.
Rubashkin supporter Raices said she knows him as a generous man.
“The Sholom Rubashkin I know has been a pillar for the Postville community. He has helped, not single handedly, but he has helped this community to what it is today. The entire community, of course the Jewish community, but not just the Jewish community,” said Raices.
Raices feels Rubashkin deserves to be home in Postville, and the signs show others feel the same way.
“We want him to know we haven’t forgotten about him, that we cry all the time for him, that we want to see him out and we feel he deserves to be out,” said Raices.
“He did some major, major wrongs, so I think he deserves a major sentence,” said Ouderkirk.
Mrs. Raices said many people put up a lot to get Rubashkin out on bail and do not feel he is a flight risk at all.
But Father Ouderkirk said Rubashkin is an even greater flight risk now that he’s been convicted in court.

Many people felt that putting SMR’s picture on the flag background was disrespect to the flag. If that is their complaint then the flag should be taken out of the picture. Yellow ribbons convey the same sentiment.
Ouderkirk ShR”Y is a criminal who should be put on trial for his part in the destruction of Agri which affected not only the Jews of Postville but the entire town. He is supposed to be a man of the same G-d whom we worship, and the din against him in Shamayim is far worse than anything the government can do to him. DON”T YOU HAVE ANY FEELING TOWARDS THIS RUBASHKIN FAMILY WHO HAS SUSTAINED THE COMMUNITY FOR MANY YEARS? EVEN YOU MIGHT HAVE BENEFITTED IN A SMALL OFFSHOOT WAY FROM SHOLOM. Have pity and say the right things.
