Who's Got Soul? COLlive.com and Chasdei Soul II Soul present A Jewish Star - the first-ever Chassidic music competition with auditions, voting and Avraham Fried and Mendy Pellin as judges.
A first-ever Chassidic music talent contest was announced Wednesday, promising to discover the world's next Jewish singing sensation.
A Jewish Star singing competition was launched by Chasdei Soul II Soul, a Crown Heights organization helping children with special needs, and COLlive.com - Chabad-Lubavitch Community News Service.
Auditions for non-professional males over the age of 18 will be held online at AJewishStar.com. Only Chabad-Lubavitch niggunim are accepted.
Music fans from around the world will vote on the video performances, rating between 1-5.
The top vote-getters will then be reviewed by the judges - that include Jewish music superstar Avraham Fried, comedian Mendy Pellin and others - who will choose three finalists.
The finalists will each perform live at the upcoming Soul II Soul 5770, an eagerly-anticipated annual concert in Brooklyn, NY. It will take place in March, 2010.
"Every year we work hard to bring creativity and new energy for our loyal audience, and the Jewish Star competition is one of the most exciting initiatives we have undertaken so far," says Shmuly Goldman, co-director of Chasdei Soul II Soul, with his wife Tzirl, the organization which raises funds for the education of children with special needs in Crown Heights.
"Giving performers an opportunity to showcase thier talent is in keeping with the underlying theme of the event - helping people and bringing people together while having an uplifting and enjoyable experience," added Goldman, who has produced the annual Soul II Soul show since 2004.
"Chassidic music is considered the pen of the soul," says Yehuda Ceitlin, editor of COLlive.com.
"In the last decade Lubavitch niggunim have become increasingly popular. I see this competition as a another method of 'spreading the wellsprings of Chassidus outward'," Ceitlin said.
Are J.J. Katz and Shmully Stern the other 2 judges? We love their entertainment!

TuneCore
Guys, this is not a plug or promotion of any kind -- but for any striving artists out there who want to publish some music but don't have the means of funds to go through production companies and so-called "record labels" -- visit TuneCore.com -- they will -- for a one time charge -- upload all your music (whatever u want) to iTunes, Amazon MP3, etc. and pass thru the commissions to u. This way you don't have to go through all the costly production of CD's, stocking, packing, etc. THIS NOT A PROMOTION. I'm not affiliated with TuneCore in any way -- I just know many artists who were able to make a few dollars off their hard earned records without the need to invest a fortune.

(10/27/2009 11:25:38 AM)
23
the problem is
that the way it is set up the person with the most friends will get to the finals not the best singer.... Hope I am wrong....
(10/27/2009 11:39:28 AM)
24
to Mr. 22
FYI: music is not only about music. every maven knows that. that's why you have many singers who don't have great voices but are on the top of the charts.
Music is also about preforming, the show, the presentation, the production and Mendy Pellin knows more then a thing or two about such things.

JUDGES
MORDECHAI BEN DAVID "THE KING" -- FRIED AND SHWEKI SHOULD BE THE JUDGES! NOW THERE IS A PANEL. THEY ARE BY FAR THE BEST CHOICE FOR ALL REASONS.
THEY ALL KNOW A THING OR TWO ABOUT PERFORMING, THE SHOW, PRESENTATION AND YES, ALSO VOICE AND VOCAL QUALITY.
IF YOU'RE GOING TO DO IT - DO IT RIGHT!

Who is Competing?
Will guys like (in order of age) Meir Rivkin, Shlomo Meir, Chaim Fogelman, the Marcus boys, Benny Friedman, Yoni, etc. be allowed to compete, even though they have basically proven themselves as performers and vocalists? or is the competition strictly for the new young guys just starting out?
would love to have the above guys and perhaps some others, compete among themselves and have the public judge and choose who is the most popular amongst them.
yaaaa! that would be cool! and may the best man win.

If you are seruous abut wanting to perform and using your talent, then I'd advise you to save up some money and go see a professional music teacher who can assess your talent.
If you've got what it takes, save up some more and put out an album!! May you be successful.
