Devorah Nechama Neuwirth, a loving mother and caring Lubavitch community member in Montreal, passed away Tuesday, Tishrei 25, 5770.
She was 41 and suffered from a tragic lengthy illness.
News of her passing shocked many as she took an active role in communal affairs in her own subtle way.
“She was full of joy, excitement and was very good hearted,” one friend told COLlive.com.
Born in Crown Heights and educated in Boro Park, her maiden name was Bloch.
Together with her husband Zevi Neuwirth, she looked to enhance the education level of the Jewish schools in Montreal.
“She was there to do what’s best for her children,” a neighbor said.
When Zevi was involved in establishing Hatzalah emergency service in the city, Devorie was an enthused supporter and hosted the inaugural meeting in their home.
“She liked to do chesed quietly,” says Sima Paris, founder of the local Friendship Circle and co-director of Free Hebrew Schools For Juniors.
“More than once she came over with money and asked that I give it to a family in need. She also volunteered for Meals on Wheels, bringing food to elderly people,” Paris told COLlive.
Living next door to Maison Shalom, a home on Carlton Avenue serving disabled Jewish adults, she would invite the residents to eat with her family on Shabbos.
Upon hearing about her illness, Torah classes and charity were given in her merit in Lubavitch communities around the world. Tehillim was frequently said for her recovery.
She is survived by her mother, brother, husband Zevi and children: Mordechai, Chavah, Yehuda and Avraham.
The funeral will leave from Anshei Lubavitch on Trans Island Wednesday 8:30am and arrive at the Montefiore cemetery in Queens at 4pm.

We didn’t know Devorah very well, we only spend one Chanukkah Shabbos by Devorah and her family. But all four of us still remember how much hospitality and warmth we received from Neuwirth family and especially Devorah. We will like to thank them again for such a pleasant Shabbos.

All of us and beyond witnessed Devorie’s consistent acts of goodness and kindness. Devorie and Zevie – long life to him, have always been there for anyone in need. Whether the need was for a meal, shelter, clothes, money, employment, medical help etc, it was always eagerly and graciously extended with a smile. As a team they worked together making this world a better place. Therefore, It is my fervent hope that we learn from these great actors of good and perpetuate Devorie’s legacy through imitating her noble actions. In addition, I would like to wish their entire family happiness… Read more »

To the Neuwirths and all whose lives Devori touched:
I was terribly saddened to learn, first, of Devori’s tragic illness and then her passing. Though no word of mine will lessen your grief, I do hope the beautiful memories you have will serve as a consolation for you. May you all be spared from further sorrow.
With great love and admiration for the Neuwirths and their extended families,
Ellie Israel

I am heartbroken for the family by this devastating news. Devorie was my 4th grade teacher in BR, she made a huge impact on me that year and still does. She was an amazing, kind, fascinating and beautiful person/teacher. I remember bringing her Shaloch Manos and how she made me feel so special and put so much effort in the Shaloch Manos that she gave in return. I once missed some school for a few days, she sat down with me and filled me in on the work that I had missed. As a mother I am so sad for… Read more »

The aibershter must have rachmanus on these orphaned children. ad mosai!!!

I did ‘t know her well, but when I went through difficult medical issues, on the first day back from surgery, she was the first person on my street who came to see me and inquired if I needed anything and she brought me a beautiful bouquet of flowers. And when I asked her one day how she was doing ?, she answered, I am fine ! How are YOU doing? Let me know if I can help you in anyways. Even my… Read more »

Ad Mosai! Such a tragedy. It defies all logic!
My heart goes out to her beautiful children and husband who lost such devoted mother and wife, and to the entire Newirth and Bloch families. What a horrendous loss for them and for our entire community.
I always looked at devori in awe. so put together. such a mentsch. she is in the midst of raising wonderful wonderful children. they are too young to be left orphaned. devori always was involved in positive action. quietly. in her fine, aidel way. may hashem comfort her family. indeed, we need mohsiach now!!
what a special person, what a special family. why them? why her? is the 6000 year old question. what can i say? no words can describe the loss. to reb zev to the entire neuwirth mishpacha i hope you can find a nechama. we mourn with you.
i will do a mitzvah of ahavas yisroel, neuwirth style in her memory.
boruch dayan haemes. the tragedy is indescribeable! for all who knew devori….it tkes a lot of Hashem’s imagination to do somehting lke this to a woman of this stature. Devori will be so so sorely missed. a tragedy. a broken family-all of us as a community. moshiach is the ONLY answer. no words of comfort. May Hashem listen to our tefillos (and we did much of that as a community) and send moshiach now. these children can not be left without a mother!! never!!
I did not know her nor did I hear about her, but I am moved and touched by this terrible tragedy. To her entire family…Hamokom yinachem eschem bsoch availai tzion vyerushalayim.
