Chazzan Speaks in Mesivta
As Davening plays a major role in the Yomim No’roim, Oholei Torah Mesivta bochurim were introduced to the world of Yom Tov davening from well known Chazzan Mottel Berkowitz.
As Davening plays a major role in the Yomim No’roim, Oholei Torah Mesivta bochurim were introduced to the world of Yom Tov davening from a well known chassidishe Chazzan, whose grandchildren are Oholei Torah Talmidim.
The Seder began with an enthusiastic call from Rabbi Zushe Wilhelm, menahel of the Mesivta, of the importance of davening in the Daled Amos of the Rebbe, and how much more so during Rosh Hashana.
Even if for whatever reason a talmid may not be able to daven all the tfillos, each tomim should make a point to be in 770 for at least one Tefillah.
Chazzan Mottel Berkowitz then addressed the talmidim, and gave an overview of the various Tefillos and piutim from the machzor.
With his clever wit, Rabbi Berkowitz opened the eyes of the bochurim, giving them a much deeper understanding and appreciation of the Yom Tov Davening.
Many Talmidim said that this shiur will most definitely have a strong impact on this year’s davening.

What is the difference between a Chazan and a Baal Tefila??
and he is a chasedeshe yid and thinks before he talks unlike you!
A good Baal tfilla would be insulted to be called a chazan.
A good chazan would be insulted to be called a Baal Tfilla.
How come?
A chazan is focused on the quality of the sound produced, both in the vocal "manipulations" and the tunes(s). A piyut or an opera lehavdil get more or less the same treatment.
A Baal Tfilla is focused on the Tfilla. The vocal animation and the tune (nusach) are vehicles for the prayer to Hashem. Some Baalei Tfilla are merirusdik (Czech-Hungarian style) some are ziess; and some are just plain hartzig. (Is it a no-no in Lubavitch today to show emotion in Tfilla?)
Rabbi Mottel Berkowitz would be a failure as a chazzan. He takes the role of shliach tzibbur seriously, and his voice lacks the volume, the range, and the resonant quality for operatic scores .Even lots of voice training would not make him a great chazzan.. BUT without any voice training or shtik he is a superb baal tfilla.
The 4th day slichos 770 had a baal tfilla who could be a chazzan IF he wanted to - which one could be certain (if you know his davening) he would not want.
Why is it that in Lubavitch very very few people know the difference?
Because pnimiyus was "king" and to "perform" at the ommed was considered "gross". So even a baal tfilla who is full of hergesh is/was called a chazzan in a demeaning sense.
The result? Much of tfilla - once the bastion of avoidass Hashem in Chabad - has now become a shame. The quicker the better - with the addition of the problem that kids are growing up without learning "ivreh" properly, they "spit out" the words in groups (phrases), and if they make a mistake they have to go back to the beginning of the phrase, not the word.
