I couldn't decide, still can't
June 24, 2018 1:45 pm

On the one hand C.H. needs more housing so it should be a no brainier. On the other hand the people who build have no loyalty to the people of C.H. and bringing in more yuppies makes chinuch more difficult. (I feel badly for the people who think it’s just economics, this is the Rebbe neighborhood and well ask people who have attacked and hurt the Rebbe if they would do it again)

Your claim that minority communities voted overwhelmingly in favor is a false. 52 out of the 59 community boards voted to reject Mayor Bill de Blasio’s new Mandatory Inclusionary Housing policy. majority of CB9 voted to reject the plan. Behrman rightfully voted to reject. Goldstien voted to support. The plan allows developers to build high rise apartments buildings without parking under the guise that they will provide affordable housing. Orthodox Jews don’t qualify for these so called affordable apartments. Half the issue in the neighborhood, traffic, increase in rent, came as a result of the plan that Goldstein and the… Read more »

Breaking the attachment to crown Heights
June 21, 2018 4:21 pm

Maybe it’s really time for the next generation to start of thinking to move out of crown Heights and establish new wonderful communities, America is by large the cheapest 1st world country in terms of housing , just met in Las Vegas a wonderful Chabad kehilah, housing is there extremely affordable, very cheap taxes it has a ripple effect on the whole life expense

Recent Upzoning - 2015
June 21, 2018 3:51 pm

Mayor DiBlasio recently upzoned much of the city through passage of Zoning for Quality and Affordability and Mandatory Inclusionary Housing. The Jewish, Black, Asian and Latino members overwhelming voted for this..circa 2015. Jacob Goldstein voted Yes on the CB9 board level for ZQA and MIH. Yaacov Behrman voted No on the CB9 board level to the Mayor’s ZQA and MIH upzoning. Jacob Goldstein is the current Assistant Commissioner of Housing and Renewal, and there are a few CB 9 members who are either into commercial real estate who follow whatever he does. The ZQA only provided for studios , one… Read more »

America is a large country

just because some has friends and family in Crown Heights doesn’t mean that’s where they have to live. There are many beautiful Jewish communities all over. In many diffenrent countries as well for that matter. All because Crown Heights is what you’re used to and decided that’s where you want to live is not going to change the Brooklyn real estate market.
Advice: Find a great Jewish community with inexpenssive housing and a good Hewish school, take a few families with you and move there. You’ll actually have somewhere you can park your car.

So how do you prevent homelessness or diaplacement?
June 21, 2018 1:04 pm

To 39 (Sense of entitlement):

So, what should an “incumbent” tenant do if, through no fault of their own, they can no longer afford the rising cost of rent? Just forcefully relocate them from one place to another? Why impose such suffering on them? Maybe make just 10% of the units affordable, like with tzedaka.

Wow. Cold Hard Cash!!!
As the chovas halevovos says – if Cash is your G-d then you are at the mercy of $$!!

Wake up, smell the coffee! You can make money but respect your communities!!

Sense of entitlement is wrong-headed
June 21, 2018 11:29 am

It’s hard to understand the point of view being expressed in many opinions here. The reason why real estate is so expensive in Crown Heights is because there is so much demand. When people are willing to move out and therefore the demand goes down, then prices will come down too. Landlords are not to blame here. Do you really expect landlords to charge less than they can, which will also mean they will lose money on their investment? The sense of entitlement among some of the commenters is very wrong-headed. People must understand how economics works. Nobody owes you… Read more »

Community needs to build
June 21, 2018 7:21 am

The community should gather donations and build a building with affordable rents for those who truly need it.

Incorrect information
June 20, 2018 11:46 pm

Cornell Realty no longer owns 931 Carroll.

June 20, 2018 11:38 pm

Agreed. While property and rents here aren’t cheap it’s worth everything to live in EY. I don’t have a single regret about leaving that filthy, dangerous neighborhood to breathe the pure air of Eretz HaKodesh. And at least we know our enemies. You guys have the chassidim from Williamsburg -and even youe local greedy landlords – buying up everything and pricing you out of your own neighborhood. To me, they are enemies of CH.

We all need to
June 20, 2018 10:56 pm

get with the Rebbe’s program and bring Moshiach. The reason we can’t afford CH anymore is because we need to be living in Yerushalaim

To the Forward
June 20, 2018 10:18 pm

Can you please not mix two very separate issues. The issue of the riots was 25 years ago. Today’s hot topics are centered around affordable housing for all. Lets focus on the present and perhaps the writer can do some research and make some innovative suggestions on topic.

More section 8
June 20, 2018 6:24 pm

CH needs more section 8 buildings to be built for jews only there is so much housing being given to blacks..

Behrman abstentioned from the vote
June 20, 2018 4:44 pm

Yaacov Behrman was the only abstention on the board regarding this project. Everyone else voted against

Rabbi Goldstein is confused. Berel Suger’s presentation had nothing to do with this development and is unrelated. Suger said during his presentation that he opposes up-zoning in general but is asking for a special variance to accommodate large families. Goldstein himself opposed development on his corner but was overruled by the city.

The problem with all of these so called ‘affordable units’ is that it is very complicated for the average young Frum family to qualify we all either make too little or a bit too much and even if we did qualify they aren’t usually on good blocks. That said any landlord who gets any sort of Government benefits for their projects should absolutely need to give something back to the community. Lastly like others have pointed out plenty of ‘unzer’ are part of the problem and we still honor them at all of our dinners etc.

Yankel Goldstein - Former Chaiman CB9 34 years
June 20, 2018 3:43 pm

I attended the entire meeting until the end . Where this reporter got his info regarding The Jews and blacks at this meeting uniting to fight developers is fanciful thinking , Our outstanding community Askan Berel Sugar addressed the meeting and spoke at great length about the need to up zone the Jewish area of Crown Heights Bounded by Empire Blvd, Union Street , Nostrand Ave until Schnectady Ave as the current zoning does not permit any addition to homes within this area and forces many residents to figure how to add bedrooms to their existing homes . He was… Read more »

I think all these proposed high rise buildings
June 20, 2018 3:39 pm

are going to make the neighborhood very crowded and as it seems like it’s already doing even more of a tense place to live. That’s not even considering the increased cost of living here. I don’t think high rise buildings work well practically speaking for religious families anyway. How to you manage on Shabbos & Holidays to walk up and down 10 to 15 fleights of stairs. Don’t like this it’s not good from any angle! Stop this disaster now!

The Reason is...
June 20, 2018 3:33 pm

The reason this article considers the Jewish and black communities equally at fault for the riots, and the whole attitude displayed reeks of left wing agenda is because it was taken from the FORWARD. They did not change; just because they write in English instead of Yiddish.

Move to NJ
June 20, 2018 3:31 pm

Buy a house in NJ
Don’t waiste your time , nobody is going to listen your non realistic claims
You think that the Rebbe doesn’t want this and the landlords think that the Rebbe made them rich and now they can charge more and more
There are much nicer neighborhoods than CH
You are going to feel
Happier once you do it
Have your own garden , do more mivtzoyim

free market capitalism
June 20, 2018 3:10 pm

It is unfortunate that people are being priced out of the neighborhood. But, government controls and socialist policies are not the answer.

If the market
June 20, 2018 3:04 pm

If the market is good let them build. They are building in our neighborhood and taking a risk by building so let them get the rewards.

Enough!
June 20, 2018 2:44 pm

Move to East flatbush while it is somewhat afordable

Laws of economics
June 20, 2018 2:40 pm

Stopping these luxury homes won’t bring down prices. In fact, it will RAISE prices. The market operates on supply and demand. Crown Heights is in demand, and the less supply, the more real estate will rise.

Let developers build and build until the demand dwindles.

June 20, 2018 2:22 pm

to # 11- We sit on our porch on crown between kingston and albany and are sad to see hipsters filling the building. My daughter bought a shoe box on east 38 street and the hipster is on kingston. Trust me, moving to east flatbush is NOT an END to all means. So who to blame? the landlord that sold to the person that brings hipsters by the droves or to the new ”management” who refuses to post for our yungeleit. Between the SATMARS who are swarming here like cokaroaches looking for property and UNZERE that do this , there… Read more »

Where to Demonstrate
June 20, 2018 2:07 pm

In front of their their homes together with our black neighbors

THat will not be too comforting for their wives and children

Let them feel it on their own turf

Scumbags
June 20, 2018 2:00 pm

We need to find out their names, hunt them down and bang down their doors and not give them menucha; take their pics, post em all over the place and protest right at their doorsteps where they live. The Rebbe is still looking out for us. They need to know they r bringing K’peida upon themselves from the entire community. The Rebbe is certainly not happy what they r doing.

Allow capitalism to work
June 20, 2018 1:41 pm

Capitalism is the fairest way of living life. It is colorblind and allows equal opportunity. Ultimately let the market decide what property is worth.

For those who wish to understand more, read “Basic Economics” by Thomas Sowell.

Capitalism

Have Jews forgotten about the ghettos and when/where they were only allowed to live on a block or two (in terribly crammed conditions, not allowed to expand)!?
We should be grateful to hashem that we live in a time and place in which anyone – including us – can build what we wish.

Here is what you can do !!
June 20, 2018 1:26 pm

Say no!!! Take a minute and call board nine ! Write a letter to mussa Moore and explain why this is wrong! Take a minute and call Laurie combo office and Richardson . Make your voice heard !

We need to make a stink !!

Where Can We Go Demonstrate
June 20, 2018 1:04 pm

Please let the community know what they can do to help. It is about time we protest these luxury developments. Not to mention Jewish money hungry scumbags from Williamsburg who are destroying OUR neighborhood for their personal benefit!

Hungarian Chutzpenyakes
June 20, 2018 1:00 pm

We need to tell these Ungarishe honks to go do it in their neighborhoods in Williamsburg and Boro Park, and leave us alone. They would be hung if they tried anything there. They r also doing it on Empire Blvd bet Schen & Troy Aves – in the center of our hood ואין פוצה פה ומצפצף – so what’s our Community Council worth if they can’t protect our housing???!!!! Shame!!!

'Who had a history of tension culminating in the Crown Heights riots'?
June 20, 2018 12:46 pm

What kind of parallel are you making here between the Jewish community who want to live peaceful and respectable day to day lives and the perpetrators of ‘tension’ and ‘riots’ who are responsible for the constant and continuous one sided assaults, harrassment and on occasion, murder, of these Jews by the above mentioned blacks? Such a misleading and slanderous yellow journalism should not be given the light of day on local community web site.
