Medgar Evers College in Crown Heights is postponing the Open House planned for Tuesday evening to introduce its program to accept to accept Yeshiva and Seminary credits.
A source at the college told COLlive.com that due to “some scheduling conflicts in regards to the venue,” the event is going to be postponed for another date in the very near future.
The open house was scheduled to be held today to answer the public’s questions about the OPAL program (Orientation Program for Adult Learners) which transfers one’s life experience and prior education into general education (CUNY) credits.
College officials explained that if someone comes with 120 Yeshiva credits, Medgar can transfer 60 of these credits and convert them into CUNY credits, towards receiving a minor or major degree.
The development of this program was in the works for years. A group of Lubavitcher individuals in Crown Heights have been in talks with Medgar’s President Dr. Rudy Crew in an effort to give Yeshiva and Seminary graduates the option to obtain a degree for work purposes.
College officials did not respond to the question whether the last-minute postponing of the open house was connected to public comments made by Rabbi Yosef Braun, member of the Crown Heights Badatz, against the initiative.
VIDEO: Rabbi Braun against college credits
Rabbi Braun didn’t mention that one of the people who has been pushing for the program at Medgar was his confidant, Rabbi Eli Cohen, executive director of the Crown Heights Jewish Community Council (CHJCC).
“For the past several years, I had been participating with the committee formed by President Crew to ensure that any Chasidic students attending Medgar should be safe and that their religious beliefs should be accommodated,” Cohen told COLlive.com.
“My main focus was on (the) certificate and employment-related courses offered by Medgar that could help our young people find employment to support their families,” he said.
But he added that “I made it clear throughout that I and the organization I represent could not endorse outreach within the community relating to full-time degree programs since that would not be in concert with the teachings of the Rebbe and Chabad.”
He said, “While I was made aware in advance of the Open House that had been planned, I did not pay enough attention to the message that was being conveyed until I looked at it more carefully after I heard the Rov’s comments of last night.”
He thanked Dr. Crew “for being so sensitive and understanding as to the community beliefs and standards and be willing to cancel the Open House at such a late hour after a good deal of effort on the part of his staff.”
An official at Medgar told COLlive.com on Tuesday that “this initiative is moving forward regardless if there was an open house or not.”
“The goal of the open house was to provide an opportunity for people to come in and speak with someone from Medgar about Admissions, Financial Aid and how many credits would be transferable via OPAL. Medgar Evers is committed to assisting anyone and everyone who is interesting in attending Medgar to pursue a BA and or BS.”

So, this speech, can just turn so many people off! I actually think that our young adults should be encouraged to go to frum colleges. I would not reccomend this place to my kids… but he sounds removed from any sense of reality. The prospect of living in poverty, no choices, is just such a quick way to send people out of the community!
Also to 129- how about cutting out the racism? A JEW should be the last person on earth to be racist for many reasons, and it doesn’t reflect well on you.
Keep up the good work rav braun!you make the rebbe very proud !you stand up for what you believe and you are not embarresed! You are a real rov!the rebbe’s rav! Yasher coach!
I’m sorry but yes when a news website posts something, especially a Chabad website, it means they don’t disagree with it. I don’t believe they’d post it if they were against it. So apparently since they did post it, it shows that they don’t disagree with it.
Keep trying 147 148 because this time he buried himself, he won’t crawl out of this, he simply is a child could not control himself made a spectacle of himself, he is going down for the count, we are all laughing from him, Rachmonos on him.
i asked rabbi Braun a question and he so clearly and logically explained it to me in such a nice way ( even though it wasn’t what I wanted to hear ;)) so maybe think before u start bashing
How many of the commentators attacking the rav had personal interactions with him? My experience: he answers shaalos and offers advice with both halachic genius and psychological insight. The semicha comment just makes me laugh…it’s like asking if Koufax was really a great player because he was never signed for a minor league.
Anyway, skimming through over 100 comments I see that Rav Braun’s word on websites is unfortunately accurate. Please excuse me while I go rinse my eyes.
Please respect the Rebbe and know that yes he cares about us. That’s why the Rebbe says we all should have a Mashpia. Certain individuals are given permission.
I think he convinced all the people that are concerned whether we are living in Ymos Hamoshiach to continue not to go to college. What he lacked in logic to convince people that think on their own, and that are open minded, he made up in his emotional diatribe. The problem is not that the College is accepting our people, but, perhaps, that our boys feel the need to go to college. Lets hear Rabbi Braun, speak to these bochurim (not at them) Lets hear how he can convince them! It is a far easier to champion and preach to… Read more »
In reading about the subject, the Chassidisher Derher magazine had an article on this about a year ago. Below is a link to the archived issue. The relevant article starts on page 38.

I’m not suggesting college but for those who are planning to go to go (hopefully with a Mashpia’s Ok) The Yiep is the Frum worlds alternative. Through them you can get 60 credits for Yeshiva or seminary and graduate with a reputable BA in 18 month (they offer MAs as well). But you need not step into any goyishe college or have any non Frum classmates, or leave your home. And have no problem with Yomim Tovim or apikursus. Classes are online, only Yeshiva kids in class and can be a class of only women or men. Call Rabbi Pesach… Read more »
How many of us are millionaires? Maybe 2? I wonder if the yetzar hara tells some people to remain on food stamps and public assistance. It’s easier.
Collive.com did not endorse Medgar Evers. They are just informing the community of this new news. That’s what a news website does. Do you think if fox/CNN writes about something it means they endorse it? NO!!! they are just reporting news.
Somehow, someway we all k”h have jobs. Some of us are even millionaires, and don’t have college degrees. The yetzer harah for thousands of years have convinced us we can’t move from the shtut, can’t be late 20 minutes, need college,…
Our Boys don’t need it, and our yetzer harah is very smart!
we are all so proud of collive for standing up to this abusive person braun, the entire community must know how he and his henchmen are trying to control the shechuna. keep up the good work do not be intimidated. thank you from all
Is that you will be exposed to knowledge
And the silver medal award for machlokes goes to YOU!!!! We all need to learn to accapt each other! We are in sefirah now WAKE UP EVERYONE!!! Somehow col manages to put up these articles just in time for sefirah and chesbon hanefesh in how we act with each other!!!!! Can’t we all just put all these feelings aside for a moment and love each other?!?! Is it even possible???!?
#131 do you have any valid proof of what you said? When I posted I said just go read the My stories on Chabad.org. If that doesn’t work, read My Story the book, if that doesn’t work for you go read the Igeres. Whether or not someone went to College was a personal question between the Rebbe and the person and for as many as he said no he also said yes. And if you read Zalman Jaffe’s memoirs, the Rebbe also established half day kollel and trade schools during the 60’s and 70’s because he knew and accepted that… Read more »
How dare you call any Jewish community cursed! Moshe Rabbainu himself and Yishayahu Hanavi, were both admonished by Hashem for uttering negative descriptions about Bnei Yisroel. How much more so that the Rebbe said כאן צוה ה׳ את הברכה Your comment is repulsive and probably to be meal de zcus on you ,was made without much forethought. It is befitting for ALL OF US TO WATCH WHAT COMES OUT OF OUR “MOUTHS” particularly bymei sefiras haomer, and even more particularly in the week of parshas Tazria -Metzora. I’d love to see rabbi braun’s passion used in an effort to create an educational system in “his” “community” that empowers individuals to create income for themselves and family. that educates them in a deep robust and organized fashion…
Yes Parnassah comes from shamayim. Does that mean there is no need for hishtadlus anymore? Just sit at home the bundles of cash will fall from the sky on to your lap.
Plenty of colleges offer courses online you only need to go in for tests. Would the Rebbe be against that? Or mainly the enviorment of college?
Get your facts straight before you write something you have absolutely have not a shadow of a clue about, the Rebbe Campaigned, yes indeed Campaigned against collage for years and that’s a fact!! At the end of a Farbrengen of such nature the Rebbe said the crowd should chant together “no collage” three times!!! The Rebbe wrote to a shliach (for all those who claim that it’s different ones one of married) that if you go to college your are dragging the Rebbe with r”l. These are two episodes out of dozens So don’t deny reality and anyone who is… Read more »
Your estimates are actually on the lower end of the scale. Mainly, because tuition prices keep going up. Especially, the only a child becomes. However, the income crisis is not just exclusive to married couples. Singles are having a difficult time too, since they live off one-salary. Many do not even want to get married, because it is virtually impossible to be financially stable. It is a vicious cycle, that is incredible difficult to break.
And you blame any Lubavitcher that leaves this cursed community? It’s so expensive to live there not to mention living like total cattle cooped up in shoe boxes for the same cost as owning a home in Pomona! And then having to deal with this lunatic who calls himself a Rabbi? Blacks and crime no Eiruv on shabbos failing schools that’s the blessed community u talk about?
Let me get this straight.
You are comparing Rabbi Braun to the Rebbe?
There are no words to describe the appalling chutzpah you have in doing this. People like you are exactly why this community has collapsed: WE HAD A REBBE B’GUF! And some of us still follow the Rebbe & have not created their own.
Shame, shame, shame.
TTI is a frum program that offers degrees for men in a kosher way eliminating all uneccasary aspects and using Torah for credits
More kosher colleges like Touro are needed but a reality check is needed… How many Lubavitchers practically live on Facebook and Instagram yet mock a college education, even from a kosher college? You think Facebook is kosher????
Aside from zero tznius and men/women mixing, do you know Facebook is infested with nudity and shmutz? If your friend is someone who looks at shmutz you will see shmutz on your newsfeed! Why is nobody banning this poison?????
There’s a difference between a bochur and a married man a bochur should sit and learn Torah whereas a married man may need a degree to provide for his family
The Rebbe is the one who said there should be elections for Rov. After the Rov is elected he makes the decisions not that the community votes on every topic that’s absurd. See the Sefer על דעת הקהל for all the Sichois from the Rebbe on the topic
There are different aspects to this whole topic. On one hand, there is the issue of college, which the Rebbe is clearly against b’shita (there are exceptions and there are qualifications etc, which were mentioned in the speech). At the same time, there is the issue of limud chochmas chitzonius which the Alter Rebbe says clearly in Tanya is “metameh chabad sh’ba’nefesh.” It is only mutar in select circumstances. College is a foul place for a chossid. It is full of depravity and immorality. It is full of confusion and spiritual disease. It is not a pleasant place for a… Read more »
Anyone that was by – or heard recordings of the – rebbe’s farbrengens know that there were Times where the rebbe raised his voice and shouted very loud and intensely (perhaps even louder than him..) against things he didn’t like. For example: the hei teves seforim topic, mihu yehudi, oyso hoish, and more..
So I’m just wondering what’s the difference when he’s raising his voice about things he doesn’t like..?
A married family member of mine goes to college. He has encountered English, Spanish, psychology and other professors who spoke about things which are against the Torah. A lot of professors are also anti-Israel. Most colleges require courses that are not necessary in a job. There is a need for Jewish schools in Crown Heights that can teach for getting jobs with yirei shomoyim teachers.
I think that to pretend that the rebbe was not against a college education is foolish, that doesn’t mean that we don’t have a very serious issue that has to be dealt with. Here are the hard numbers, take a family of five, food is $1,500 a month, school at $5,000 each is $25,000, camp at $2,500 each child is $15,000, rent at $2,000 a month is $24,000, that is a total of $82,000, I left out many other expenses just in case my estimates are to high on things that I mentioned, the big question is how are you… Read more »

“Instead of living under a rock, our leaders should teach our children that it is ok to want to support a family. That when you become a lawyer, electrician, accountant or a doctor you should throw all your energy into doing so in a way that will make the Rebbe proud. Bottom line, Rabbi Braun is right and is brave enough to say what the Rebbe stands for. The fact that so many people on this site are bashing him so disrespectfully only serves to reinforce his point. There can be a thousand reasons why eating chazer is beneficial, but bottom line it’s treif. The rebbe said college is treif, especially a non jewish one, so what’s the point of arguing?!?! You don’t like the person saying it?! That’s just an excuse not to listen. He’s saying it for the people who do care to do what the rebbe wants
If anybody has eyes they can clearly see that Braun is a nothing who has been untruthful about who he is and what his intentions are. Any bochur or yungerleit who is in 770 knows that he davens at noon without a minyan – comes late leaves early. Him and his henchmen have just created Machlockos and have actually been threatening physical violence against R Osdoba like the bullies they are. He is in court with many members of this community bc of his lies and deceit. He needs to leave willingly or be thrown out as one of the… Read more »
If you want to understand the hate and venom, you need look no further than braun himself. People tend to respond to you the way you speak to others. Braun’s whole demeanor in this speech and in general is not bakovadik for a so called “rov”, yelling and screaming like a crazy person, trashing many in our community and speaking lashon harah himself. He exhibits no refinement, he is not eidel at all. You would never see Rabbi Osdoba or Rabbi Schwei behaving in such an undignified manner. And so his behavior receives the same type of behavior in return.
And what exactly is your comment?? Not a pashkvil?
I don’t understand how in the days of sfira, one could have the chutzba of talking about a Rov with such hate and venom . And what was his crime ? he said what the position Rebbe is. If you don’t like what the Rebbe position on college is, you will do what you want. I believe COL and the other websites should institute a policy of not publishing comments without the person identifying themselves. Hiding behind anonymous hateful posts does nothing to bring sholom to the community. If you have something constructive to say to help the community sign… Read more »
In Halacha one must understand why a certain law was created to understand if it applies to a particular situation. Clearly the Rebbe was against putting a child into a typical university environment which would challenge their Yiddishkeit. However, it is very possible that the Rebbe was not against the concept of education especially if it is done in a safer more kosher environment. I personally once saw a hand written letter from the Rebbe saying how Touro (obviously only the frum Touro) is not the same thing as a regular college and is only a problem if attended as… Read more »
Have we completely forgotten how the Rebbe screamed with much pain that writing a pashkvil (aka a Col comment with no name) is ארור מכה רעהו בסתר??? I am simply in disbelief, how does this web site allow these comments…
What do you want from Braun. He grew up in Williamsburg where they all live off food stamps, welfare, medicaid, etc. etc. This is his way of life.
The Ba’al Machlokes Gold award goes to (rabbi) Yossi Braun
Since he got her after being tossed from Australia (and we know why) has done nothing more than creating Machlokes and distrupting the Rebbes schunah
Time for him to go back to Australia and repent
I am yet from the times of Rabbi Z.S. Dvorkin-do anyone of us doubt as to what he would say about this issue(Or about the nerve and gall re-speaking about rabbi Braun-even if he was not a rav-a simple yid-yeder zach hut a shiur.
The Rebbe doesn’t like college. Why, because of what is being taught in college. The atmosphere in college. Also it’s a mixed environment. Does someone really want their children learning in an environment that goes against what Torah teaches us.
If you want to go to college, then go to a frum college.
Which website did he call א שמוציגער גוישע וועבסייט is it this one?!
Indeed Strange? Maybe this is the Hungarian type of language from where he hails from!!
“crown heights is the best comedy on earth !!” I live halfway across the world not on shlichus and it makes me sad to see the challenges in crown heights. I know from yechidus with the rebbe that he was against college except in rare instances. I went to the rebbe as a baal tshuva in stern college. He didnt want me to transfer to another college. My friend who is a baal tshuva the rebbe told to transfer from a secular college to stern college. Whatever Dr. Crew’s motives (extra funding?), this can only help CH’s Jewish community. With a decent education, young people can actually get out of the cycle of dependency, poverty & financial pressure. Maybe the CSSY’s & Devorah Scheiners can at long last retire & enjoy their families, without spending every waking moment wondering how to help their community. Perhaps with good skills and qualifications, decent families can pay tuition, afford outrageous rents & maybe – one day – be able to buy a home. Thumbs up for rabbi braun elected by the majority of the community and someone that stands up for what the rebbe wants!kol hakavod!
to Rabbi Simon Jacobson’s latest talk on college, this past Sunday. The problem is that college professors often teach
ideas that are anti-religious. Let’s make it clear, especially if you’re taking certain philosophy or psycology classes you are putting yourself in a very dangerous place. I don’t know enough about the Frum colleges.
I hate to say this, but I put at least part of the blame for this problem on certain Shluchim who by not making room for other Shluchim, when there is room, are putting individuals in a situation where they have to find ways to have Parnassa!
With all due respect Rabbi Braun, we need your talents channeled to “Yemin Mekareves”. Instead, your first significant policy statement is one of “Smol Docha”. Please get busy with the disillusionment of our kids and their flight from the community. Our yeshivas are not even properly educating the kids who are capable and interested in Kodesh. Shlichus careers are difficult to come by. What do you want average yungeleit to do exactly?
You are 100% correct. The younger generation wants to have life skills, that the Yeshivah system does not provide them with. It is impossible to make ends meat, on a minimum wage salary. That is even with a two-income household. No one enjoys being stuck in a dead-end job, or relying on government hand-outs. Besides, it is not like anyone in the Frum community is getting a Sociology or Gender Studies degree. Or any other useless “paper” degree. They are going to become doctors, nurses, dentists, dental hygienists, accountants, psychologists, lawyers, paralegals, stenographers, physical therapists, occupational therapists, computer programmers, graphic… Read more »
“Truth” was referring to #80 comment about what Braun did to Shofar blower. These stories about him need to get around to the community – we all have a right to know who he is – the rebbe wouldn’t allow someone like him in 770.
I wouldn’t call it a truth, I would call it an exception
Exception = not the norm
You canot choose to apply an exception to yourself, you do have to apply the rule
If you don’t want to that’s fine, but then face it – you’re going against the Rebbe’s wish
Especially if you “communicate this throughout the community” – when the Rebbe already “comunicated” to us in a very clear way that he is against college
Before you argue against the rabbi learn the sichos of chelek alef thru daled and see what the rebbe says about going to college and the many igros about going learn the facts.
Its somthing the rebbe rashab and feriedige rebbe fought in Russia.
To number77 I am a Shliach for over forty years, I have a congregation of over 500 families, Braun is simply not well, not a Rov, more important not a mentch, he will never be a mentch, let’s hope this will be the end of him, save the Rebbes community, pack him up and ship him off.
and we think all is well in our circles forgetting that its not,all the while spending time criticizing all other frum non lubavitch circles instead of looking at our own faults. OY
Hashem does!
R Schochet is head of COPE Accounting program. He’s a CPA, his father is a lawyer, and Grandfather ROV of Chabad
How can more truth like this be communicated throughout the community?
They have a right to know!!
How else would Braun have such top quality attorneys without BA’s and Law schools?
The Rav is not criticizing Medgar Evers College, he is criticizing a so called CHABAD website for posting something completely against the Chabad view.
B”H we have a Rebbe, as Chassidim we do what the Rebbe says, and anyone who has anything else to say can go ahead and say it BUT NOT IN THE NAME OF CHABAD!
The rebbe said to ppl personally regarding this matter at hand – he also encouraged it for some.
Rabbi Braun picks and chooses when to follow the rebbe and Halacha and when not to. Just take a look at the turmoil he caused between R Osdoba – one of the Rabbanim when the Rebbe! was with us. He was untruthful from day one. He doesn’t have smicha…etc
If you are going to a not so great school to take a not so great degree and end up with not so great grades then what is the point of that? Just for a piece of paper that any employer will laugh at if you include it on the resume? The Rebbe okayed university for people he knew would work hard, excel and be productive with that education. Not to people who will only find barista jobs with their Sociology degrees..
All those that agree with this Rov when you fundraise please do not solicit $ from the men or women that go to college.
YOU ARE RIGHT!
a degree would definitely enhance anyone’s skills. The young generation today, don’t want to be sucked into like their parents generation, living on section 8, Medicaid, food stamps. They want a quality life, pay for tuition. Have a house, send their kids to overnight camp, out of town yeshivas and seminaries. Why should they not have that life, if you work for it, you deserve it. No parnasa is a great cause of Shalom Bayis issues. The Rebbe told me to go to college even though I was in the yeshiva, I was not the only one, there are hundreds, remember people this guy is not a Rov, on Rosh Hashnana he told the one who blew the shofar that he did not blow correctly, even though our Holy Rebbe blew that way, don’t you see people the boy is not well, he will never be well.
Many yeshiva bochurim go there with permission of their yeshiva. They aren’t making fun of their rabbis, unlike many posters here. It is a frum environment. Yes this place offers more credits and is closer but it comes at a big price…

The Rebbe’s view on Touro College
In the year 5734 the Rebbe wrote a Ma’ane as follows (free translation):
In reply to your writing about my attitude to Touro College,
Based on the words of the directors a few times, and they are very strict about enforcing it – that it is only an alternative for college and not for Yeshiva,
I told the director Sheyichye that the effect of this venture is very good, etc.
(Igros Kodesh [Levin] Vol. 29 p 264)
SHAME!!!!
Shame on you!
I never thought o would hear such repulsive remarks about a ROV OF CROWN HEIGHTS- where does this come from???
And 27 you’re a Shliach of the rebbe?? I shudder for the people in your community who are being taught with your disrespectful, rude, inappropriate tone.
There is NO PLACE to post disrespectful things on social media against a rabbi, even though you don’t agree with him.
1) that’s pathetic and petty
2) YOU DONT DO THAT. THERE ARE STANDARS IN LIF.
moshiach nowwwww!!!
Why would Medgar Evers do that? So many people in the community are interested! The rabbonim do not speak for us.
He is not a Rov he can never be a Rov, for someone to behave in this manner grabbing a microphone and yelling like a crazy person is all the proof one needs to realize that he is simply not well, people wake up smell the coffee he is a maniac he is his own worst enemy, even all the money in the world can not save him, if you think he cares about people going to college you are out of touch, he does not like the fact that the web sites say he is not well and that… Read more »
I am not a massive fan of Rabbi Braun, but I can say that I give him a lot of credit for standing up and talking about this the way he did. Kudos to Rabbi Braun!

It takes years to get a degree in college, and only a few months to grow a beard.
Grow it! and the blessings shall flow.
This kind of talk is irresponsible as it is myopic. While it’s undeniable that the Rebbe’s view on college education was quite clearly against it, he DID allow it in many cases – especially where it was clear that the reasons were parnosah based and there was little danger of one’s spirituality being negatively influenced (for eg, after getting married). I’d say that the conditions today are very different then they were in the Rebbe’s time – for the good. That is to say, not everyone is cut out for a Yeshiva education, not everyone is entrepreneurial by nature, while… Read more »

I hope that all those who were encouraged by the local college’s efforts to make credits and experience available as towards a degree, reach out to the college and pursue a career they might otherwise have felt discouraged about. while there is certainly room for fundamentalist, ghetto-mentality, freeze-framed perspective about Chabad – lubavitch (and crown heights) of 2018, there’s also room for personal perspective and personal choice of guidance for personal life paths. if rabbi braun is not your rav or mashpia, or you simply don’t have a question about whether college degree is for you, ask YOUR mashpia, or… Read more »

The rebbe outright against going to college you are right that to some the rebbe said yes but that was to does that a already started getting a degree the said to finish but to start in the first placeח”ו
Boycott anything that has developed from a college graduate requiring college education. Engineering, medicine, dentistry, law, therapy, etc etc etc… Go ahead Rabbi. Lead the charge!
If 60 credits transfer from a Yeshiva, and you need 90 Credits for a B.A. diploma, that leaves 30 Credits to graduate, which can be done in ONE YEAR with 15 credits per semester.
Just don’t look at the chiksas…..or….make them convert.
Rabbi Judah says, whoever does not teach his son a trade teaches him robbery (Babylonian Talmud, Tractate Kiddushin , p. 29a).
Even Israel acknowledges Chasidm need to “Share the Burden”.
What’s going to happen when the gov’t requires work to get benefits?
Will the rich in CH subsidize the poor ? Look at the religious schools in CH who can’t pay teachers because parents don’t have job skills.
Exactly…. to work in early childhood education, teachers need a Master’s. To work in the girls’ high school secular department, teachers need a Bachelor’s in their subject. To be a doctor, nurse, lawyer, accountant, or phycologist a degree is mandatory. Most areas of computers also require a degree. The Jewish community has always been on the forefront of these fields. It is wrong to force people to rely on government aid. Most people I know with college degrees, in the Lubavitch community, are very frum. It is the ones without, who go OTD at a faster rate.
First the Eiruv, now college, chevre you see where this is going? All of the Rebbe’s values are being destroyed. Please take a minute and reflect on the matzav of things, the Rebbe wants we should listen to the Rabbonim. It’s for our own good. Ad Mosai!
Since when does Braun care about anything but his own ego? He minions have been terrorizing the Rebbes Rov since he stepped foot in Crown Heights. Someone should rehearse with him the Ten Commandments.
YOU SOUND LIKE A BUNCH OF TWO YEAR OLDS!!!! I don’t either necessarily go to rabbi Braun… BUT don’t deny something he says JUST CUZ HE SAID IT!!!!! Check the sichos for ur self- who cares who says it?!?!!!
Grow up ppl
I feel the same way! I am completely sickened by this horrible lack of disrespect!!! It’s crazy that people could speak this way about anyone, let alone a Rov!
What people have done cannot be changed. As Lubavitchers we don’t shun. We embrace our brethren with all the love we have.
Yet.
If there is someone who sincerely wants to do what’s right for their souls, they will take the time to learn what the Rebbe says about this topic and speak to a mashpia who will help them know if college is right for them.
To tell someone to go right ahead because no one shuns Jewish doctors and whatnot sounds quite silly to me.
I was very much looking forward to the open house tonight. Even showed up to find out it was “postponed”. To the Organizers; I appreciate you trying to put this together, but you can’t let us know a half hour before it was supposed to begin that it’s cancelled. I’m very disappointed and honestly feeling a bit down. Finally something that could possibly further myself… I was davening mariv last night in 770 and in middle of my shmonei esrei he started shouting… his words had no effect on me, and if anything made me dislike him. It’s people like… Read more »
The Rebbe also said to ha e Ahavas Yisroel, the Rebbe also told the schools to charge less tuition, the Rebbe said many things.
But to the average family cannot survive on a Salery teaching in Oholei Torah.
Do the math.
All is good and fine…the mosdos don’t listen to the rebbe
And charge arm and a leg and then say too bad…so some one whom isn’t business minded has no choice but get a professional degree….if the mosdos work with us that’s a different story…
Today, if u want to get a job, IN crown heights, most school will ask you for a degree in education or what not. BUT, since we cannot go to college, how are we expected to get jobs. If we are required to have a degree. But college isn’t allowed??? So then what?
I tried different klai kodesh jobs. I finaly realize need to get a degree to get a normal paying job. Doing a degree now, should have done it years ago…
This guy sounds like a troll… hes lost his mind. Funniest video ive seen this week!
THAT PEOPLE SPEAK ABOUT RABBANIM THIS WAY HOW DARE YOU
He is correct in what he says but crown heights is now a democracy and everyone can do what they want I don’t understand why both sides are getting bent out of shape
Rabbi Broin made his comments to a mostly empty room of vaguely interested congregants either teenagers or otherwise unemployed.
At some point we gotta ask if the talking points being preached from the bully pulpit reflect the reality and best interests of the community
According to halahcha once a rov is elected he stays a rov till 120…
If you want to go to college to earn a degree in order to provide for your family and community, go right ahead. I have never heard of anyone shunning a Frum doctor, lawyer or accountant. Just keep your university study under wraps for a few years and once you enter the professional world, all the Rabbonim will respect you and ask for your money. Believe me.
The vile comments here prove Rabbi Braun ‘s point. Rachmana litzlan on people that harbor such hatred towards the rav of the crown heights community! It makes the whole conversation pointless as someone who disrespects a rav, obviously couldn’t care less what the rebbe says on anything!
It’s amazing to hear some of the chutzpah that people are using against the Rebbes words, and how naive and unknowledgeable they are in the facts as the Rebbe never allowed College other than extremely few situations.
usually lubavitchers are trend setter but in this inyan were 50 years behind Ner Yisroel
We cannot vote if something is kosher or not.
That is why we have a rabbi.
You’re a legend. Oh, also, all those comments where you guys praise Rabbi Braun, you’re actually acting totally against his wishes. In fact, you’re doing something “assur” according to him by using a “trief” website. So you pick and choose want to listen to. Also, interestingly, the ones that are so very against allowing their children to learn a trade are the ones who write and sound so very illiterate, with basic grammar mistakes in every sentence. Let’s stop relying on food stamps and allow our kids to be taught a basic trade. Is learning to be an accountant, a… Read more »
Someone once asked asked the Rebbe about attending a college. The reply was, “my opinion on this subject is well-known.” What do you suppose he meant? All I can tell you is that there was a price for not finding out.
BH at least one Rov in our community sees what’s going on and stands up for The Rebbe’s kovod.
People wake up! See what’s happening?? This is an avlah!
The Rebbe created Kfar Chabad Magazine. Then people said now it’s time for a change, and founded Bais Moshiach to compete. The Rebbe encouraged, and supported the expansion of Bais Rivka. Then the same people said now it’s time for a change and founded Bnos Menachem to compete. Now these same people — who clearly don’t take the Rebbe’s words in their literal sense — are all over married people going to a local college (something the Rebbe was at most ambiguous about, but certainly not outright against) spewing sanctimony and self righteousness at the expense of those who are… Read more »
Braun needs to be shown the door… he is the biggest destruction to the community!
I’m an open minded person but believe Rabbi Braun is on the right with this one. I go to college (online) but would never endorse it as a Chabad person bc it was a specific think the Rebbe allowed to some people and not to everyone. I’m ashamed that COLlive featured it so positively yesterday and has a “going forward” title on today’s piece. COLlive get your act together and start manning up to Chabad standards.
To # 2 I don’t think the younger generation don’t care I just think it’s a generation that did not physically live to see and understand what The Rebbe was all about.and the system does not do a great job making them appreciate the value of what the Rebbe has taught us . I can go on anon but I will leave it at that .
He sounds insecure and defensive. And uneducated. Maybe if the good Rabbi took some much needed courses in public speaking and communication, he wouldn’t be limited to preaching to the choir of future food stamp recipients.
Someone says something you don’t agree with and you call him sick????! That is a really sick attitude. If you care one tiny bit of the Rebbe’s opinion about college or about respecting a rav you would watch what you say
Guess, Rabbi Braun and all his minions, should stop going to Frum Jewish doctors, lawyers, and accountants. Where does he think they learn their trade, if not by going to college?
If you should go to college or not (after your married is debatable after all most likely u won’t qualify for any program’s and will have trouble living in ch) is up for debate but we definitely shouldn’t be reading there websites that he says are richilus.
That someone can call themselves lubavitch and then a blind eye to the Rebbe s clear directives.
The girls in the high school were afraid of this Rabbi, they felt he leered at them , actually he was rather frisky if you know what I mean , it’s the honest 100 percent truth
I wonder if people realize the Rebbe only told specific people not to go to college for as many people as he said no to, many more he said yes.
You know like the last My Story where he encouraged the opening of a frum nursing school that is still in existence?
Based on the video it’s safe to assume that websites are only Shmutzick” because they posted an article that certain individuals didn’t like, but at other times when they promote other individuals for various positions in the community its kosher for all. Am I wrong?
Besides The Rebbe was indeed very clear on the matter, but it is nothing more than an issue in regards to Hashkofa, where does a Rov come into play here? It has zero to do with Halacha.
One can tell that Braun is beginning unravel he is losing it , keep pounding at him , his nerves are going , don’t let up maybe he’ll end up in a bit house
Now is the time to destroy this nut case , attack this person until he runs away from us , the damage he has already done will take years to turn around , destroy destroy destroy no pity
Braun is simply not well , all he is doing is trying to score some brownie points , no pun intended , he must be shown the door , a very sick boy
Kol Hakovod to Eli Cohen for cancelling the event!
The rebbe told me to get a degree in education. So I went to Sarah sheneirer, a kosher environment. But even there it is not so kosher. I had an English professor who made sure to tell me that I cannot write my term paper on the rebbe (without me asking) but she had no problem with a girl who wrote a term paper based on some psychologists opinion that there is no real difference between male and female, only that society makes it like that. That is completely against yiddishkeit, point blank period. Also I was in my late… Read more »
The Rov wasn’t screaming at the college, they have no reason to stop what they are doing. He wanted to wake up us Lubavitchers who have become so desensitized!!
How dare you say such a thing! Chutzpah to demean the
rebbe’s neighbourhood – where, when moshiach comes – the sidewalks will be ‘paved with gold.” All the accumulated mitzvos by so many thousands of Jews just walking down Kingston avenue to shul, and the farbrengens etc etc makes Crown heights desinted to make this one shining place , in the near future!
Thank you col for posting words spoken with courage. It’s painful to see the rebbe’s words ignored in his own shchunah. Thank you Rabbi Braun for speaking out against college.
Good point!
I vote for the Rebbe.
Rabbi Braun shared the Rebbe’s view clearly and unapologetically.
(The humorous thing is, I was partially in violation of his instructions while watching – and posting…)
Come to Lakewood ir hatorah can get a Masters Degree from FDU with a yeshiva degree and take the CPA exam
That there is a good aspect
For those students that are determined to go to college they will be able to get away with learning less secular material because of using their yeshiva credits
But thumbs up still good that he expressed his views
Interesting some names show up in every controversy
A rant like that will have 0 effect, speak in a way that conveys a message to the people you want to convey it to, instead you stand among your friends and like minded people and throw firebombs, your words will have the exact opposite effect.
agreed
politicians and judges run for reelection every so often – so should the bais din
Medgar Evers is still going through with this. They don’t have our best interests at heart obviously. For them, it’s just money. If they can give yidden some credits from yeshiva it will attract us to come and that means increased enrollment, increased funding for them and who cares if their Rebbe didn’t want it. That’s their attitude and I don’t think it is malicious. They probably realized that they have a huge untapped market in this neighborhood and if they can offer some incentive to go to university, they can get some more business. But the Rebbe doesn’t want… Read more »
Finally, someone is speaking up against it!
Thank you, Thank you.
the best comedy on earth !!
Could use some of the credits for a real Semicha !!!!!
Rabbi was elected by a vote
Since we started voting
I think we could vote for everything
This issue is up for a vote
In crown hights we vote
You cant have it bothe ways
Vote vote vote
Oh Rabbi b. Australia misses so so much.
When can we expect you back ??
I Think Rabbi Braun’s rant was a little foolish.
YES.
It’s very unfortunate that today’s lubavitchers don’t care about what the Rebbe said.
After 3 Tammuz, CH became a free for all…..
HOW VERY SAD..
Thank you Rabbi Braun and Collive. I didn’t know about this. 60 credits is even more than Touro. Touro only transfers 48. Thank you!
B”H we have a Rov who will speak up!
It’s about time our community be reminded of what we stand for, and stop excusing everyone and everything to the point of damaging ourselves
He speaks sharp. I’m very open minded and Wikileaks probably continue doing whatever I’m doing (Like everyone else) none the less he’s saying the Rebbes opinion.
Moshiach now!!
How can the chairman of the CHJCC go directly against the Rebbe’s clear directives?
