I'm a female teacher
March 26, 2018 2:17 pm

I’m a teacher and my husband received financial aid and we share our earnings.so whatever help he receives I do too. Though I still agree that it would be nice if I would receive payment too

Shulchan aruch
March 26, 2018 9:58 am

Says clearly the mitzvah of Tzedoka is first to ones family then to the local community, then eretz yisroel then to who ever you want… If you give to shluchim that aren’t part of your direct family before making sure that the entire neighborhood has (including female teachers), then you aren’t following the shulchan aruch

I'm so shocked by some comments :(
March 22, 2018 11:57 pm

Some families were helped for Yom tov. Someone did something really nice and special. This in no way shape or form be twisted to how every job and position is valued by society. Be confident that you are in the field you’re meant to be, that Hashem sees and values who you are. He’ll provide for you. And don’t let someone else’s gift cloud your own perception of how others view your job and gender.

Everyone
March 22, 2018 9:11 am

Should get tons of free food for pesach. Then it will be fair for everyone except for the grocery store owners. But then they will also get their own free food and then everyone will be happy because everyone has exactly equal and totally free everything. This is called communism. It is responsible for the death of hundreds of millions of people. It doesn’t work. What does work is believing in Hash-m and working hard. All we need to do is keep Torah and mitzvos b’hiddur, trust the Eibershter and work hard. We just have to let Him take care… Read more »

Union
March 21, 2018 10:01 pm

It is imperative that ALL workers of all ilk join a Union
Only way to ensure employers treat workforce fairly
Facts are that it is a jungle out there
Them against us !!
Experience shows that Unions do great for their members

This is not about disputing gender roles
March 21, 2018 7:29 pm

In 2018 most families need two incomes in order to get through the month. When Rebbeim are the only ones getting perks not to mention higher paid salaries than female teachers and administration (secretaries etc.) who work just as many hours, it’s called taking advantage.

Sad
March 21, 2018 5:10 pm

It’s hard to see this. I think it’s even more upsetting when there are talks, articles etc. About how in the Chabad community women are treated equally etc. There is clearly a deep seated cultural bias at play.

The merit of stay at home moms
March 21, 2018 1:01 pm

Other women are often surprised when I say I’m a stay at home home before my children are Cheder age and usually comment that I guess your family doesnt need the money. Firstly dont look into other peoples wallets. It’s the best decision for our family and my husband fully supports it. We live on the veru basics and that works for us.

Unless it is the same school, it's technically something different than illegal
March 21, 2018 12:45 pm

It is only illegal gender discrimination if the SAME MOSAD pays different wages to men than for women for the same identical job requiring the same identical or comparable qualifications. I don’t know that there are so many Chabad schools in Crown Heights that are in a position to have both Rebbis AND Morahs on their staff doing IDENTICAL jobs — maybe just Yeshivas Ohel Yosef Yitzchak, and Lamplighters? That would be all, as far as I know, and I don’t know their wage structure for their morahs (girls division) and rebbis (boys division). Even the boys yeshivas that have… Read more »

Former Morah
March 21, 2018 10:30 am

I loved teaching and was really excellent at it. I even have a degree! But I found out I made a quarter of what the Rabbi made to teach the same grade and subject. My kids received a 40% discount on tuition, but the male teachers got all their kids into school for free. Tuition came right out of my paycheck, if I even got a paycheck on time. I would even make lesson plans to for the Rabbi’s class since he was not very creative with projects. I did not mind helping him and helping others improve, but when… Read more »

forgive me, i don’t begin to understand. why did this become a forum for rechilus and complaints? First of all. there is an organized group for melamdim that paired with chasdei lev, make an organized group for morahs and try to talk to chasdei lev. vos tut zich duh? and btw, BR HS teachers DID get paid before we went home on the last friday of school. maybe #42 doesn’t teach that day. Your check is waiting for you in the office, i’m sure. and enough of this getting on the bandwagon to knock and belittle and complain. Thats’ not… Read more »

Stay at Home Mothers
March 21, 2018 9:15 am

Stay at home moms are doing a very important job providing their kids with the best chinuch possible. They do so at the expense of a salary they would earn had they gone to work. Furthermore, stay at home moms are frequently scrutinized in today’s feminist oriented, career women society. Please provide assistance for stay at home moms, the real heroes of this generation.

bus drivers and others are doing a job and get paid just like any other person does a job and gets paid. Pay is compensated according to the job. Should everyone working anywhere get a pesach bonus? it would be nice but most other workers do not get. Not those working in a kitchen , in a grocery store or anyplace so bus drivers wish you would get a bonus and so should I working in a store

March 21, 2018 7:49 am

if someone wants to help mosod A should he be attacked for not helping Mosod B? this organization helps rebbeim. another organization can help morahs.

Omg
March 21, 2018 7:09 am

This is insanely ridiculous! The Torah says very explicitly that men are the ones who provide for their families, while the mother works in the house and takes care of the children. That being so, the men have the responsibility of paying for Passover. So it’s only right that the men deserve some help in this difficult area. If a woman decides to work, it is very nice, she is helping her husband out, and her family. But it is not her responsibility to support her family, nor does she support the family therefore he does not need this special… Read more »

Community gives back!
March 21, 2018 7:06 am

IT would be so nice to see the community give back to its morahs! Perhaps local stores can offer local teachers a discount ex-10% in little toes, Judaica world etc…the stores would surely benifet in more sales!

March 21, 2018 6:29 am

Most WOMEN are th breadwinners in 2018- and they aren’t working for fun.
Wonderful what they did for the Rebbeiim- next time let’s do it for those in CHINUCH and include everyone

She's not taking away from the organizations that did for the men
March 21, 2018 4:42 am

She’s not even complaining! Simply pointing out that the same or similar should be done for families of female teachers. The Rebbeim didn’t “organize” this bonus. They didn’t “go out and do something”. It was done for them. The Morahs deserve the same to be done for them. They shouldn’t have to ask for a gift. …and no, I’m not a Morah. Just a person thinking logically. Yes, it would be nice if the schools gave the Morahs a Pesach bonus – but honestly some of our schools don’t even pay on time…..

As a community
March 21, 2018 2:03 am

We need to help everyone in Crown Heights who lacks funds for pesach. I don’t believe the intent of this article was to criticize, but rather to inform that sometimes morahs are the sole breadwinners. There are widows, Kollel wives, women with husband’s o are sick and can’t support their wives and families. And what about the many women who have not been blessed to find their shiduch? If she’s 22 and living at home its very different from someone who isn’t being supported by her parents, and has to maintain a home of her own. I believe helping only… Read more »

March 21, 2018 1:31 am

Hashem created men and women differently. The Rebbe has said that is the mans job to bring in parnosa. I believe that if a person really believes in their heart that money comes from Hashem then they will never be left alone. The Rebbe says that bitachon can give a person a diff decree then what they were meant to have. Bitachon is that powerful! I understand that its frustrating to not have basic needs met. Though I think this is being taken in the wrong direction. If school A gets chanuka gelt every year and school B doesnt the… Read more »

Most rabbeim work full day@school
March 21, 2018 12:40 am

Most Morahs do not

Morahs are very deserving-YES

It’s still NOT the same situation in general though as men teachers, in terms of them being the main breadwinner

to #10
March 21, 2018 12:15 am

why didn’t your daughter go to work in a proper school? The public school system is an excellent place once you have a degree. Immense benefits and long term job security.

"main breadwinner"
March 21, 2018 12:14 am

To everyone saying the men are the main breadwinners: a) why are you so sure that this is so? In our community, the men are generally less educated and start their work life years later than the women. Definitely in the early years, many women are the main earner, and after that it’s often a lot more equal than you would think. b) very few families can survive on a single income, which means you have women go back to work ridiculously early post-partum, leaving tiny babies for many hours, AND doing the bulk – if not all – of… Read more »

Guess what? It's not fair.
March 20, 2018 11:28 pm

Welcome to reality. It’s not fair whether for women or for those without connections, or… long list of not fairs. But you can make up your own organization and fundraise for morahs on your own, or better yet, start a new small school that respects teachers and students, not just those with connections. Yes it’s hard. But the greatest satisfaction comes from doing the “impossible” and never forget, the only people who will ever criticize you either have a financial interest in the “status quo” or are jealous of you. Good luck making it happen right away. You can do… Read more »

I am a women teaching for 34 years and love every minute of it. Whatever someone does we should just be saying thank you and not criticize. Parnassa is from Hashem , and if He put it in someones mind to help the Rebbeim why should we be putting a damper on it. Their is a tremendous amount of chesed being done by so many people. Years ago this was unheard of. Lets… Read more »

Money aside
March 20, 2018 10:39 pm

Even if the Morahs don’t get a stipend for Pesach or significant monetary assistance, a decent token of appreciation would go a long way too.

Keep up the mitzvahs
March 20, 2018 10:39 pm

Really impressive in so happy and grateful that my sons Rebbe was taken care of for Pesach. It’s great for teacher moral and self esteem. This will surly attract great talent into the field. Thank you donors

who's the "they"
March 20, 2018 10:17 pm

“They” can and will do what they want, and no one will say that what they are doing isn’t amazing.

If you want something done for Morahs, then go and do it!! Why do “they” have to follow your wants? Go do it your self!!

How come no one is mentioning...
March 20, 2018 10:11 pm

While showing appreciation is definitely welcome I would just like to make everyone aware that just receiving what we deserve in pay is plenty- as of 3.20.18 Bais Rivkah high school teachers have gone home to prepare yom tov without a paycheck!

What is going on here ?
March 20, 2018 9:59 pm

It’s not like ALL men received this “bonus” and all women DIDNT!

@#2 frankly business owners don't care....
March 20, 2018 9:10 pm

They don’t care about your private life they need a job done and a good one done and I think you answered your own question as to why woman are paid less, woman usually have other responsibilities that distract them, woman take off a lot of time for maternity leave, usually paid leave. Why would anyone be intrested in paying you equal pay for an unequal amount of work done?

Bus drives
March 20, 2018 8:57 pm

How about bus drivers we also take an important part in chinuch we also need the help !!!

Unfair
March 20, 2018 8:44 pm

Nobody even mentioned bus Norah’s yes never given much work extremely hard can u just imagine dealing not twent or twenty five but about 65 kah hard kids? No appreciation don’t get paid for yomtov! Not even a bonus for yomtov for atleast. Pesach tishreie

Grow up
March 20, 2018 8:42 pm

Women and men are Not equal, whether you like it or not. It’s time to recognize the innate value that women possess and stop bickering about being degraded in society. The woman’s role is incredibly valuable and cannot be replaced. When we try being like men, who will be the women of our generation .

And if you’re so upset, go do something about it. Stop feeling so entitled and wait for someone to shower you with free gifts. And no, don’t make a women’s March, that’s ridiculous and a violent way of showing your opinion.

Agreed
March 20, 2018 8:29 pm

So go do something for them!!

They are doing SOMETHING GREAT and you’re complaining?

To #11
March 20, 2018 8:22 pm

That is insane thing do say. Do we say that a rebbe who has one child should be paid much less than the rebbe who has 5 children. No, they deserve equal pay for doing the same job.

It is illegal what is going on, shame on lubavich for discriminating against women

What people are missing
March 20, 2018 8:11 pm

This business with the men being the breadwinners is irrelevant. Even if they carry the primary responsibility for parnassa, many families rely on two incomes today. Therefore, many women – especially those whose husbands are in Chinuch, choose to pursue degrees and more financially lucrative careers (let’s put aside the Hashkafic issues with that for now). The women who choose to remain in Chinuch do so at great personal sacrifice, passing up opportunities to earn more money. They are heroes! Enough with this “unskilled work” attitude. There is only one job that requires more skill than teaching – and that’s… Read more »

March 20, 2018 6:57 pm

I know a mechanech who managed two trips to Israel since Tishrei. With parsonage, food stamps, cash , free health care….. there are plenty of parents on the books who go once in a lifetime to ISrael…. but we know that story already. You could go make more money teaching in public school or commute to the suburbs…. there are people who spend more on commuting than you earn. At the end of the day, everyone has their own tikkunim.

I’ve been teaching for 10 years
March 20, 2018 6:22 pm

My husband works too. For the past few years, we’ve just been lucky enough to make ends meet. Is the work I do for our daughters so unvalued that if we have a hard time making Pesach, it our tough luck that I wasn’t born a man?! Teaching is a thankless job. I know it’s been said a thousand times, but it really is. I come into class with passion for my work, but often the students really don’t want to be there. It can be really demoralizing, yet I’m always there to give them the best shot at education.… Read more »

So what’s your response – a complaint. why didn’t they do MORE and also give the morah’s a bonus. Wow, that will really encourage people who want to do good to continue doing so…. Can’t argue with that

Missed the Point
March 20, 2018 5:39 pm

1. Generally speaking there is one spouse who is the primary provider. Often, not always, it is the man who is the main provider. Since Rebbeim, due to the nature of their occupation, have limited room for growth, it is only fair to compensate them in other ways to alleviate the burden. When it comes to Morah’s the question is; are they really earning less than their relatively untrained counterparts in other industries. If yes, it would indeed be fair to compensate Morah’s too. If not, which i believe is the case, then for what reason would you demand compensation… Read more »

March 20, 2018 5:12 pm

Woman seem to be also thought of as second fiddle and its wrong. They work in most cases just as hard as the husband.

I agree
March 20, 2018 5:12 pm

Help the Women Teachers! They are the best! THey eat too, Their kids need to eat. Especially when there husbands learn the holy torah all day. THe wives need the food. Wife works. Husband learns

There is a difference
March 20, 2018 5:08 pm

A man is usually the main breadwinner, so as a teacher his salary may be much less than normal. When a woman is a teacher, her husband usually has a better job too, so it’s. It the same. And if her husband is also in chinuch, then hopefully he is already benifitting from this.

Having said that I have the greatest respect for all our dedicated teachers.

My married daughter is a certified teacher holding an MA degree. She worked very hard for her license along with taking 4 state exams to work. We were both taken a back when all Jewish pre schools regardless of tuition was completely state funded or a ritzy one that charge parents a range from 25k to 35k would offer a hourly rate of 10-12 dollars an hour maybe one or two offering 15$ an hr. Appreciation Vs. Help for Yom Tov
March 20, 2018 4:56 pm

its not just about appreciation. its about real help for Yom Tov

The men are the breadwinners 🙁 you see that in the paygrade… it’s their responsibility…

Women
March 20, 2018 4:52 pm

I agree 100% that women deserve the same appreciation
The only thing is that since the husbands also work , the might not need the same help as a male teacher that most of the time is the only income support in this house or sometimes his wife is also a teacher
We have to figure out some way to give to female teachers who needs the help right now
Ideas?

single morahs
March 20, 2018 4:48 pm

100%
what about morahs who are single moms?

we need to start thinking differently as a community and as frum jews.

women count too.

we are amazing at helping in ‘clean, easy’ situations, like a new baby, a shiva etc

but we also have difficult situations that need our attention even more, such as struggling single parents

March 20, 2018 4:47 pm

It is about time poeple realize that their children’s morah are being paid almost minimum wage. Yes, salaries start at around $15 an hour which will be the minimum wage next year. Assistant teachers salary starts at $11 an hour. It is a disgrace for us to say they don’t need help because they are not the breadwinner, that might of been true in 1970, however every penny is needed now days. Rabbiam in crown heights probably make around $60k and don’t need to pay taxes and receive many benefits from the community lower tuition, tisrei care, and pesach care.… Read more »

They have to juggle work, morning sickness, pregnancy, keeping the home clean, cooking, preparing the home for yomim tovim, being mechenech the children, learning themselves and being the perfect wife, mother, hostess and still look good. Even millions wouldnt be enough!
