The recently pardoned kosher meat executive Sholom Mordechai Rubashkin met with U.S. Congresswoman Yvette Clarke to thank her warmly for her efforts on his behalf.
Rubashkin and his wife Leah Rubashkin said that the letters Clarke wrote back in 2010 to then-Attorney General Eric Holder and to President Donald Trump this past August helped secure his release.
The meeting was hosted at the home of Chanina Sperlin, intergovernmental affairs liaison for the Crown Heights Jewish Community Council (CHJCC).
In attendance were members of the Jewish communities of several Brooklyn neighborhoods, who came out to add their voices of appreciation.
NYC Councilmember Chaim Deutsch joined the gathering, and expressed his personal thanks and appreciation to the Congresswoman, as did Rabbi Mayer Friedman of the Lower East Side, advisor to Congresswoman Nydia Velazquez, Josh Mehlman, Chair of the Flatbush Jewish Community Coalition, Rabbi Moshe Wiener, Executive Director of the Jewish Community Council of Greater Coney Island, Jason Kopel of AIPAC and Julio Salazar, community liaison to Congresswoman Velazquez.
Representing Crown Heights at the gathering were Vaad Hakohol and CHJCC Chairman Zaki Tamir, Treasurer Fishel Brownstein, and Executive Director Eli Cohen, community activist and NYPD liaison Mrs. Devorah Halberstam, Shimon Herz, Director of the Shalom Center, and former Vaad Hakohol member Harvey Lang.
Eli Slavin in his introducing the congresswoman reminded everyone of the meeting held with the congresswoman back in 2010 that resulted in her writing a sharply worded letter to Eric Holder. That meeting was attended by Rabbi Moshe Kotlarsky, Vice Chairman of Merkos L’inyonei Chinuch, Leon Goldberger and Cheskal Bennet of Agudath Yisroel, Zaki Tamir, Eli Cohen and Chanina Sperlin of the CHJCC, and Rabbi Shea Hecht of the NCFJE.
Cheskal Bennet of Agudath Israel surprised the congresswoman by calling in from Israel (at 4:00 am Israel time) to add his voice of appreciation.
Let us all take the Rubashkin story as a serving example of “Ye’shat Hashem k’heref ayin” -” G-d Almighty ‘s salvation comes like the blink of the eye”. Ask, pray, don’t loose hope!! Hashem is not limited; so don’t limit the extent of your prayers!! We are all like an only child to Gd. Let us all call out to our Father who so graciously creates us anew every day, who loves us, rejoiced with us, shares our pain but created a cure before the pain began ! How lucky are we!!! ASHREINU!! You and I, were chosen to be… Read more »
