An El Al flight from New York to Israel was forced to carry out an emergency landing in Canada Sunday morning, 0404 reported.
The plane, which departed at 1 am from JFK Airport, was forced to land in the snowy Goose Bay airport in eastern Canada, which belongs to the Canadian army, after a defect in the wheels of the plane was identified.
Local military rescue forces arrived thereafter.
“The plane started to shake on the way, and we felt it jerking back and forth,” one passenger told 0404, noting that, although passengers were initially told to disembark upon landing, it was quickly decided that passengers should remain on the plane due to the freezing weather outside and the lack of an immediate place to take shelter. “Everyone was in a panic.”
On board was Yossi Chein of Empire Press in Crown Heights. He sent COLlive.com photos of the small airport covered in snow and wrote that they are “waiting to be picked up by another flight.”
According to 0404, the passengers have been asked to remain on the plane until a mechanic arrives to inspect the plane, and lodging arrangements are also being made for the passengers on the military base in case they must disembark.
In a statement, El Al said that the landing was due to “wiring issues. El Al staff are working to repair the problem and to ensure the safety and welfare of the passengers.”
3 years ago i flew to Israel, and i got stuck in turkey for 3 days! It was petrifying. Last year i decided to take the risk and travel again to Israel, and this time i got stuck in london. Let’s just wait for moshiach when hopefully the clouds won’t get stuck anywhere.
please come back safe, and you should go only for simchos your friend s.n.
all planes flying across the atlantic ocean, fly over Canada, because the world isn’t flat (sorry) like a map, so even though on a map the fastest way across looks like just going straight, on the actual globe, you fly “up” in north America, and the “down” when landing in Europe and israel
In the old days before nonstop flights, Goose Bay was a regular stop on the way to Israel. The stop was just for refueling.
How’d they Land on such an icy runway?
Guess the warm Jews…

Interesting that on 9/11, planes were diverted to Gander, Newfoundland. Must be something special about Newfoundland and Labrador?
So heartwarming to hear the efforts made there before (during 9/11) and now, to care for the passengers. Yes, this is a fearful and very inconvenient turn of events for the ELAL passengers and crew. But also, It is clear that there are lots of good people in this not-highly-populated region of Canada, who are ready to help temporarily stranded strangers in transit.
Baruch Hashem!!!
How is that on the way to Israel?
I have been in 2 emergency lanings in 2 years and i only fly a coupke of times a year
No big deal Hashem is running everything its all HP
Thank God they were not over the ocean
I just came from a Birthright group that missed their connection and was stranded in Toronto for two days. When we landed in Israel later that week, there was another group stranded in Toronto over Shabbos. What is it with Canada picking up Israel-America/America-Israel travelers?
🙂
Not the first time they had to make emergency landings.
