Hundreds of people greeted the newly released Sholom Mordechai Rubashkin outside his home in Monsey, New York, Wednesday night.
One person present reported that the street was blocked off by police and that the crowd was dancing accompanied by Chassidic music.
News of President Donald Trump commuting Rubashkin’s harsh prison sentence was met with jubilation and celebrations in the frum Jewish world.
“This is not my simcha, this is everyone simcha,” Rubashkin, wearing a Lubavitcher hat and a l’chaim cup in his hand, told the crowd at his home.
He said he got the news about his commute on Tuesday at the Federal Correctional Institution – Otisville, a medium security prison in Mount Hope, New York.
“In the whole jail, nobody can believe that I walked out,” he said. “I looked at their faces, they were dumbfounded.”
Rubashkin said he walked out of prison on Wednesday with his Tallis and Tefillin bag leaving the rest of his belongings there for later retrieval. Not knowing when exactly he’d be released, he took out 2 seforim from his locker – the Chitas and Chovos Halevavos.
“Hashem answers our tefilos,” he said in impromptu remarks. “Hashem is our loving father. Whoever needs a yeshua (help from Above), should have one and we should have the ultimate yeshua of the coming of Moshiach.”
According to reports, Rubashkin will travel to pray at the Rebbe’s Ohel gravesite in Queens and then meet up with family in Brooklyn.

I am #6 What big crimes did Rubashkin commit that deserved any kind of prison sentence? His so called ‘financial crimes’ occurred only after and only because his assets were frozen because of the witchhunt against him. He was serving an overly punitive sentence. At times it looked so bleak and unfair. Today justice was served. Baruch Hashem! Time to rejoice and prepare for Moshiach!
You hit the nail right on the head. We can debate whether the sentence he received was justifiable, but he did commit financial crimes. This is not a case of a wrongful imprisonment. This is a case of a person who did time for a crime he committed.

Federal prosecutors generally do not make up charges for prosecution; they usually feel there are grounds which have violated many laws or violation of laws on a grand scale. Those who went after Rubashkin, had their own political agenda in doing so and any ‘crimes’ hne supposeldy committed were forced on him by the actions of those going after him, like freezing his assets which then forced him into default which they used to charge him with ‘banking fraud’.
