Jewish people around the world had one more reason to rejoice on the final day of Chanukah – thanks to President Donald Trump.
Trump has commuted the prison sentence of Sholom Mordechai Rubashkin, a Lubavitcher chossid who headed the country’s largest meat processing company.
The move to commute his harsh sentence from 27 years was encouraged by bipartisan leaders from across the political spectrum, from Democrats like Nancy Pelosi, Yevette Clarke to Republicans such as Orrin Hatch.
The news was received with gleeful joy by Jews around the country. The servers of community news service COLlive.com briefly crashed after breaking the news.
The Jewish public erupted in dance, among them Rubashkin’s farther, Avrohom Aaron Rubashkin who is in his 90s. He was seen dancing with friends and relatives in New York.
One person told of a bottle of vodka that was kept closed at the Chabad Yeshiva in Toronto in anticipation of Rubashkin’s eventual release. On Wednesday, they opened it to say l’chaim before dancing.

I think we needed a reason to celebrate. We are rejoicing that a yid who was unfairly treated is set free. We have invested personally in this cause, feel it emotionally. He is our ‘brother’ in Chabad. It is incredible to see the spontaneous joy everywhere; joy that is so real and pure it crosses barriers. He paid more than dearly for his actions. He was unfairly
sentenced for a crime that did not match the punishment.

People are happy for him. They think he was treated unfairly. Perhaps so close to hey teves this reminds people that they needed uplifting news like this. They are celebrating someone getting out of a bad situation. Perhaps one of his own making but he was freed from a bad situation all the same. And, they aren’t celebrating the unlawful business practice so let people celebrate today. There will be time to analyze the situation later. (Just wait until after Hey teves).

I am incredibly happy that R’ Shalom Rubashkin is finally free. He was unfairly sentenced by an anti-semitic judge because he was Jewish.
PLEASE don’t turn him into a Chabad hero, this was a Rubaskin/Agri case and not a Chabad court case. He was not convicted because he was teaching Torah. His unlawful way of business was a Chilul Hashem and he should not be looked at as a role model for the next generation the same we celebrate our Rebbeim being freed from communist Russia.
