The United States blocked a resolution in the United States Security Council criticizing President Donald Trump‘s recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital city.
14 member states on the council voted in favor of the resolution. The United States’ Ambassador to the UN, Nikki Haley vetoed the resolution.
“What we witnessed here in the Security Council is an insult. It won’t be forgotten,” Haley said.
“The fact that this veto is being done in defense of American sovereignty and in defense of America’s role in the Middle East peace process is not a source of embarrassment for us; it should be an embarrassment to the remainder of the Security Council.”
It was a stark change since the administration of former president Barack Obama which allowed the Resolution 2334 to pass, stating that Israel’s settlements constitutes a “flagrant violation” of international law and has “no legal validity.”
Haley stated on Monday that “Given the chance to vote again on Resolution 2234, I can say with complete confidence that the United States would vote no; we would exercise our veto power.”

Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was quick to respond to the change in tone in America’s position at the United Nations. He channeled the Rebbe‘s remarks to him when he served as Israel’s ambassador to the UN – ‘a place of darkness and lies’.
“Thank you, Ambassador Haley,” Netanyahu said. “On Hanukkah, you spoke like a Maccabi. You lit a candle of truth. You dispel the darkness. One defeated the many. Truth defeated lies. Thank you, President Trump. Thank you, Nikki Haley.”
