The Levi Yitzchok Library has 500 mivtzoyim menorah kits to give out for Chanukah. Come pick up your kits at the library, located at 305 Kingston Avenue, to give out during the remaining days of Chanukah.
Included in the kit are three Menorahs, dreidels, pennies to play games, donuts, and a Chanukah guide.
Crown Heights families are encouraged to sign up to bring Chanukah festivities to unaffiliated Brooklyn residents’ doorsteps and are welcome to bring presents for the kids they meet. Seminary and post-seminary aged women can also make private Chanukah parties for Brooklynites through visiting families, seniors, and local venues. The library will match Crown Heights families or individuals up with other local families to visit who can use a beautiful Chanukah experience and they’ll receive packages from the library to take on route.
One of last year’s participants went door to door in Brighton Beach in an apartment building with Jews, asking the families with mezuzahs if they want to light the menorah. She went inside a Russian family’s home in Brooklyn to light with them and to make a memorable party. “It’s so much more personal when you come to someone’s home and they see a menorah, Chanukah donuts, dreidels,” said Fraida Glassner, one of the organizers of the project. “The family received presents and they were so grateful and happy.”
The idea is to light up someone’s Chanukah, who may not have had the opportunity otherwise.
“We want to give out bags so that every menorah can find a home,” Glassner explained. “Each menorah has a story and belongs to someone, we just need to figure out who’s it is. Each person in Crown Heights is a shliach to go on mivtzoim, share the light and miracle of Chanukah and if each person finds three Jews who need menorahs it’s amazing.”
