Hundreds braved the cold and high winds to take part in the Grand Menorah Lighting at SUNY Downstate Medical Center.
The event, sponsored by Chabad of SUNY Downstate, was hosted by the new President of SUNY Downstate, Dr. Wayne J. Riley, and New York State Comptroller, Thomas P. DiNapoli.
“It’s pleasure to be here tonight, celebrating the Festival of Lights with this wonderful community,” said Dr. Riley.
After greetings from Dr. Riley and Comptroller DiNapoli, Rabbi and Shliach of SUNY Downstate Medical Center, Rabbi Yosef Yitzchok Holtzman, spoke about the importance of Chanuka and it’s practical lesson for today’s times.
“By bringing even one small light on the side of good we unlock the potential to transform our world into one of goodness and light,” said Rabbi Holtzman.
The crowd of students, faculty and local families, enjoyed hot potato latkes and fresh donuts, both traditional staple treats of Chanuka. Chassidic singer and songwriter, Rabbi Chaim Fogelman, entertained with traditional Jewish songs.
Rabbi Holtzman later remarked, “I’m very impressed that so many people joined us in spite of the cold. It just goes to show that everyone is looking for a little more inspiration.”
