I was stunned to find out while planning our wedding, after becoming BT and eventually becoming a kallah, that we were indeed not allowed to have our chuppah outdoors! We were told that this is because, while not yet frum, my chossan and I had each been married before (my first marriage was not even a Jewish marriage, r”l, but there were no children from that marriage). at chuppos where the spectators were indoors, but he insisted on making sure the skylight was open.

I don’t understand what R Friedman means by being “partially” under the sky. If the skylight is open then the chupah is fully under the sky, every bit as much as it would be outdoors. What difference does it make where the spectators are? (I have also been to chupos where the chupah was outside on a porch, while the spectators were inside; I assume R Friedman would approve of this.)

Well written article that helps to clarify an important point.
Very powerful message that as Chabad chassidim spiritual connection should be our priority.

The Rebbe in Igros Kodesh vol 12 page 117 says that it is perfectly OK to have a chupa indoors with the roof above open

If it is permissible to hold the chupa inside albeit with the roof open to the sky and that question can only be addressed to a Posek then all the hyperbole hound not prevent choson and kallah making their personal choice
Pure Halachic question to be addressed as stated to a Posek
