For the third consecutive year, four generations of Jewish women in Porto Alegre, Brazil gathered for a spectacular event that takes place all over the world: preparing challah in unity.
“Joining together to make the bread, sing, pray, and dance, we feel how the strength and life energy of each individual adds up and grows when we’re united – and that may have been the most impressive life lesson we had,” said Cíntia Moscovich, a local journalist.
Held at the elegant Casa NTX hall, the occasion brought together 1200 women of all backgrounds and ages, for a night full of inspiration and Jewish awareness.
To portray the light and warmth of Shabbos, the stage was designed as a Jewish home overlooking the hills of a Jerusalem sundown, highlighting the theme of the night – lighting Shabbos candles before sundown.
The evening featured a sensational show by the French singer Melehà in her debut in South America, followed by inspiring words of prayer by Mimi Liberow and the preparation of challah conducted by Raisy Binjamini, all orchestrated meticulously by Malka and Brochi Liberow.
Not a dry eye was left in the crowd as four generations of mothers and daughters passed on the flame of tradition, empowering future generations to carry on the role of the woman in Jewish life.
As the evening came to a close, the hall was filled with smiles of gratitude and excitement, braided challos on the way to the oven and an exquisite gift of an engraved wooden challah board for each and every one.
One of the most incredible features of the Mega Challah Bake project is that it doesn’t end when the event is over. It actually just begins when everyone leaves. Each woman comes home and proudly shows off her challah. Once it’s in the oven the whole house is filled with the smell of freshly baked bread.
Automatically, whoever is home is drawn to the kitchen. There they hear all about the evening, Shabbos candles, Jewish songs, friends from way back when, take a look at Lubavitch Magazine, Program Guide, and maybe even plan a family Shabbos dinner.
