Man Hit on Way to LA Synagogue

Shocking: A frum Jewish man was viciously beaten on his way for Shachris at a shul in Los Angeles on Monday morning.

israelnationalnews.com

An Orthodox Jewish man en route to a Los Angeles synagogue for morning prayers was viciously beaten by an unknown assailant Monday morning.

Footage from a closed circuit camera shows the attacker pacing around the street at the site of the attack, then lunging at the victim as he walked down the street.

The attack reportedly took place near the Bais Yehuda synagogue at the corner of Oakwood and North La Brea Avenue in Los Angeles.

No details have yet been released on the condition of the victim or progress in the investigation into the attack.

The LAPD says it has not yet classified the incident as a hate crime, adding that the appeared to be a random assault, not a robbery.

Locals who know the victim say he was targeted because of his faith.

"He's never hurt a fly," one local told ABC 7. "He's just a good guy going on the way to prayers this morning and gets pummeled for no reason other than probably being Jewish."

Might be a pure Hate crime,
since it didn't look like the brute tried to rob him. Simply vented his rage on the Jew.

Stupidity
It's a schizophrenic homeless guy. Not a hate crime. What we need is for the LAPD to work on cleaning up the streets from all these crazy homeless.

random assault?
In front of a shul? Doesn't seem too random. Probably a member of storm front or other neo-nai group.

This was utter hatred
I only hope someone does the same to the attacker when he is caught, and also when he is elderly. Needs a taste of his own medicine. Shameful, pummeling an elderly Jewish man just because he has the 'temerity' to walk down the street!

Oh my gosh!
Whats is this mans problem? Its amazing how as soon as a fellow jew gets beat up, another jew comes running to help him. However this time a bit to late.
Its crazy how much hate there is towards us, the jews.
Hashem!

There are no words. Refuah shlema to the victim.

Dovid eulogized the deaths of King Saul & Jonathan that we need to know how to protect ourselves. The elderly man may not have been able to due to limitations & the surprise assault. Perhaps we need to acquire more self-defense skills & for sure pray for our safety in these perilous times.

You're absolutely right . The homeless situation is totally out of control. There are several encampments within a in a few blocks radius of the Yeshiva on Waring.

Drugs !!
The man was clearly on drugs and had no clue it was a Jew. This is not in front of a shul, the yid was walking home after davening and this is in front of a private house. So scary, kids walk alone in this neighborhood!

Horrible
California is not doing enough about the homeless problem. There's always been homeless people but now it's overwhelming. For the money we pay to live here, the past few years I no longer feel safe. Between the anti semetism, drugs and mental instability it's a bad combination,

Of course mental illness is a problem everywhere. But CA has a mix of warm weather, laws which enable panhandling & lack of access to health care. The end result is more mentally ill people on the streets than anywhere else I've been.

I heard this man has a mental illness, and did NOT take his, medication so he therefore randomly attaced this rabbi.

Not everyone with mental problems are randomly violent.
The Jew was carrying his large tallis bag and was very identifiably a Yid. I doubt he would have gone berserk with a person of color.

to clarify
yes its very possible its because he was a jew but its not certain.
however (reply to comment one) its impossible for him to be a nazi and terrorist. nazis hated muslims. plz make sure your comments make sense before you write them.
whaetever the case is, this is still very scary and sad.

I agree with #11
We need to have self defense classes for yidden.
And they should not just be from someone who can handle himself but has no formal training or just a little bit, or does not know how to give over what he knows.
We need professional martial arts 3rd degree black-belts with extensive teaching experience, who can make sure the students really learn useful methods and tactics that can really be used on the street, against any attacker.

Just as importantly, we all need to remember that the Rebbe taught that Torah teaches that if all Jews were together, in Achdus, then the antisemites could not harm us.
The Chofetz Chiam, taught that Loshon Hara was the only reason these days for us to still be in Galus.
And since Loshon Hara is the opposite of Achdus, then the Rebbe and the Chofetz Chiam are both really saying essentially the same thing.
If more people would learn on a regular basis, the laws of Loshon Hara and then IMPLEMENT, and actually APPLY in their daily lives when interacting with others, it could only help to bring Moshiach, Bim Hara, Ve'Yamenu.

Confused
A great grandfather could learn krav magna and fight off a surprise attack? How about a gun. Arm yourself. Open carry allowed in CA. So many people are doing just than. Was a gun hater. No more

Practical suggestions above on self-defense. A gun can be a potential aid if a number of variables are achieved: On-going training which includes the psychology of self-defense & technique. The gun must be a good fit with the owner who should purchase a liability policy to assist in covering the cost of bonding and a trial for defending oneself from a criminal should the need arise. The proper ammunition and safe storage at home/office. One must be exceedingly low key/low-profile if one chooses to legally carry in a state that allows. A speed-loader and/or back up ammunition is a must. #22 above targets a key spiritual issue we cannot overlook.
I support weapon carry with a person who is very well-trained and is sober about the awesome responsibility. May H' give us great wisdom, patience, and siyata de shemaya.

Open carry is NOT legal in California, even if the weapon is unloaded. Don't post things which other people might get arrested for relying on.

Above someone thought he had schizophrenia--could be, but also could me someone crazy on meth or cocaine or ???
This took place in one of the large Jewish neighborhoods in LA where the police have been mostly ignoring the "homeless" (should be homeless by choice for most). The community has been bombarding the LAPD and other makers and shakers about the situation, and the needles and the people using them seem to be relocating (for now)

question to enlightened commenter
How does your assertion that it's 'homelessness' rule out that it's also at the very least a despicable violently Jew-hating assault?
