Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was one of the first world leaders to speak with the new U.S. President Donald Trump after the latter’s inauguration.
Described as “a very warm conversation,” the phone conversation on Sunday covers issues such as the nuclear deal with Iran, the Palestinians, the civil war in Syria and more.
Netanyahu expressed his desire to work closely with President Trump “to forge a common vision to advance peace and security in the region, with no daylight between the United States and Israel.”
Trump spoke by phone Saturday with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto and is set to personally meet British Prime Minister Theresa May on Friday, according to Politico.
Netanyahu has been jubilant over Trump’s victory, hoping for a “new era” following his strained relationship with former president Barack Obama over the last 8 years.
On Friday, as Trump was being inaugurated on Capitol Hill, Netanyahu tweeted: “Congrats to my friend President Trump. Look fwd to working closely with you to make the alliance between Israel & USA stronger than ever.”
During a cabinet meeting in Jerusalem on Sunday, Netanyahu said: “I appreciate President Trump’s deep friendship for Israel, and his declared willingness to fight radical Islamic terrorism with full force.”
Netanyahu said he will remove political obstacles from regional and local planning committees in order to ease construction in East Jerusalem, according to Hebrew media reports.
He added that wide-scale building will soon be green-lighted in the settlement blocs as well, Times of Israel reported.
Trump has pledged to move the American Embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, a break with past policy but a long-sought goal for Republicans, Politico noted. The plan wasn’t said to be discussed in their conversation.
President Trump invited Prime Minister Netanyahu to come to Washington to meet him in February. A final date for the visit will be set in the days ahead, the Prime Minister’s office said.
Ahead of his call to Trump, Netanyahu released a public video to the Iranian people reminding them how Obama hasn’t stood by them during their uprising against the Iranian regime.
