In a spectacular evening highlighting the importance of connecting with our spouses in a disconnected world, 200 women gathered – many without their cell phones – to be inspired by Rabbi Mendel Samuels of Farmington Valley, CT.
Rabbi Samuels shared fascinating interactions that he had with the Rebbe and he emphasized how connected the Rebbe was to each and every person. In today’s society we often find ourselves halfway down the block as we are finishing to ask a passerby, “How are you?” With the Rebbe there was no such thing; each question that he asked was meaningful and he listened carefully to the responses given and asked detailed follow-up questions that left no doubt to his sincerity.
The hall was filled with laughter as Rabbi Samuels shared amusing encounters of his demand for the Rebbe’s attention when he was a young bochur in Yeshiva, but despite the hilarity his message was strong. It is easy to get caught up in the whirlwind of our day to day lives and much simpler to stay in contact with others using brief text messages and emojis. However, we must learn from the Rebbe how important each relationship is and how crucial it is that we spend the time focusing on others and sharing in their experiences. When we connect with others we can express true empathy and when we are able to empathize with others then we can build lasting relationships.
The women in the audience were left feeling inspired and uplifted, the message of connection now an integral focus. After enjoying delicious soups generously sponsored by Kaffe Kafe and delightful breads sponsored by Brooklyn Artisan Bakehouse, attendees were invited to prepare take-home containers for their husbands; perhaps a good motivator for them to attend the men’s evening later in the week. Apparently, that incentive worked as over 65 men gathered to hear Rabbi Samuels speak a few days later. Program was complete with cholent sponsored by Dovid Malka Catering.
