A seniors resource seminar was held last Wednesday in Crown Heights, featuring speakers Devorah Gershowitz, Crown Heights CDPAP Coordinator for Heart to Heart Home Care and Shoshana R. Brenenson, Esq., Crown Heights Elder Law attorney.
Yosef Hershkop, Kamin Health’s Community liaison, moderated the event.
The panel focused on new homecare resources, planning and tactics for long term care, navigating Medicaid rules, as well as how to structure homecare to suit a family’s needs.
Some of the questions asked by the families of those needing long term care were:
What if my income is above the eligibility limits but I’d like to apply for Medicaid to cover my homecare?
Can my home health aide help me with housework and grocery shopping?
I know I need help with my tasks of daily living but having a stranger in my home is disconcerting. I’d much rather hire my daughter to assist me. Could she get paid by Medicaid to assist me?
What about my home? I hope to leave it to my children one day, but would it be secure if I or my spouse needed skilled nursing care in a facility?
The presenters discussed options and resources for Medicaid eligibility, the utilization of trusts to shelter income and assets, CDPAP: the new home care resource that allow family members to be paid caregivers, and much more.
The program was co-sponsored by Crown Heights Urgent Care, a member of the KāminHealth family. For more information on planning for long term care, contact Devorah Gershowitz CH CDPAP, outreach and educator, at 347 834 2161 or Shoshana Brenenson, Crown Heights Elder Law Attorney, at 646 837 0688.

B.H. There is a need for a Senior Center, more central, say, like somewhere near 770, or the Museum or Eshel?.
you have to focus on any elderly person who is living alone who needs assistance with maintaining the home i.e. changing a light bulb, helping shovel the sidewalk after a snow, helping hang curtains or window shade or venetian blinds; shopping for small items, getting a meter reading, etc.c.
Would have been nice to have made this Gathering in conjunction with the Center,
BTW Which was started By Rabbi Elye Gross Z”L
Yossi you are the best!
So sorry I missed this!!!! Where was it publicized? I’m drowning in home health care questions since my mom has been living with us for the last year…. W/there be follow up meetings? Who can I turn to till there is another meeting?
Somehow I missed this event but I am very thankful it was presented. As a Crown Heights Senior, I am very disappointed at the severe lack of activities for seniors. We have no pleasant place to gather, no exercise programs, no trips, no interesting events. That is really sad. Please address this concern for one day you will be seniors and then understand our difficult situation. Just one small example- grocery orders are delivered only when purchase exceeds $ 75. For a widow living alone, that is quite a problem when we have inclement weather. That is just one of… Read more »

wow! what an important addition to the crown heights community. I’ve worked with Devorah in the past she’s a gem, very experienced and capable
Devorah is such a hard worker and very empathetic, a real asset. Besides for that , she is a wonderful person
Devorah’s speech was inspiring, thoughtful, well-researched, and easily understandable. She’s bringing years of experience, hard work and dedication to our community. It’s so amazing that Crown Heights has such a resource.
