Rabbi Elimelech Zweibel, the renowned Mashpia who has raised a generation of Chabad rabbis and chassidim, has passed away on Sunday, 19 Cheshvan 5777.
He was 75 and did not wake from his sleep, according to family members.
Rabbi Meilach, as he was candidly called, was the Head Mashpia of Yeshivas Tomchei Tmimim on the campus of the Rabbinical College of America in Morristown, NJ, where he has taught for decades.
Rabbi Zweibel has been teaching and mentoring at the Yeshiva for over 50 years. He has personally guided bochurim to grow in their learning and refining their behavior before getting married and making a living.
“There’s no such thing as being out of Yeshiva,” he once said in an interview with COLlive.com. “Just because you are physically not in Yeshiva does not mean you are not a Yeshiva bochur with all implications and requirements.”
“I know of a married man who has a family and a job, but when he had spare time or was on vacation, he would come to Yeshiva and keep the same seder as if he never left Tomchei Tmimim. Bring the ruach of the Yeshiva to wherever you are,” Rabbi Zweibel stated.
In his earlier years, Rabbi Zweibel was a member of ‘choizrim’ group that reviewed the discourses of the Rebbe before they went for official editing to the Rebbe himself. He is one of the major contributors to this generation’s leading works on Chassidic philosophy alongside Rabbi Yoel Kahn and others.
The high regard in which fellow Rosh Yeshivas and Mashpiim held Rabbi Zweibel was evident when he would regularly attend and give a shiur at the Global Yarchei Kallah in Parksville, NY. Editors from Lahak Publications working on the Toras Menachem series would often consult with him for clarity and references.
He is survived by his wife Mrs. Libby Zweibel and children Moshe Zweibel – Crown Heights, Dina Gourarie – Sydney, Australia, Yossi Zweibel – Crown Heights, Zeldy Oster – Los Angeles, Chani Goldberg – Morristown NJ, Avi Zweibel – Ashland, Oregon, Mendy Zweibel – Chico, California; grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He is also survived by his siblings Moishe Zweibel – London, England, Devorah Goldberg – Montreal, Zushe Zweibel – Israel, Shoshana Plesser – Tel Aviv, Israel, and Sara Halperin – Israel.
The levaya will pass by the Yeshiva today at around 2:45 pm and will continue on Monday, leaving Shomrei Hadas in Boro Park at 2:00 pm and passing by 770 at 3:00 pm.

Such sad news… Irreplaceable loss to Kol am yisroel and to the world! He was a huge personality and influence in my growth in Yiddushkeit during those early years in Tifferes in Morristown. I was a real “greenhorn” back in the early 70’s and Rabbi Meilich seemed to be like Moses! I was kind of afraid to be near him but he quickly put me at ease with his gentle and wise disposition. It was a real honor to be in his presence. My heartfelt condolences to the entire mishpocha and wishing them always revealed goodness and simchas! And may… Read more »

Need to compile a collection of interviews from his former talmidim and make a book beside a bio . When was he born , who was his mashpia. Where did he learn. Did he always learn in lubavitch ,how did he get into nigla to learn kzos by heart. Not a usual practice for a chabad boy etc etc more about his life and formative years . Also pictures of him and the mashpiam who influenced him , r shlomo chaim etc
Thank you for those well-said meaningful and heartfelt words. My thoughts exactly, but you put them into writing.
R. Meilich known as a scholar would always walk slowly and delibraretly deep in thought. One time i saw him running and i wondered why ? so i was told that since it is Chanuka he is in a rush to bring menoirois to the family to give them out on Mivtzoim.
Dear Dinah and family. You were so blessed to have such a legend of a man as your father. You must’ve gained so much from him. I wish you blessed memories BDE. Kind regards Dovi and Bernice Crouse South Africa
what a beautiful comment!!
worth re-reading.
A tziyur of a chassid.
May he have a lichtigen gan eden.
My husband my boys were privileged to learn and be inspired from this great man and chassid. As a bystander, so to speak, reading the beautiful tributes of this great chassid, talmid chachom and true yirei shomayim, I too, am greatly inspired by his life, though I did not learn directly from him, obviously. Like the Rebbe says, Vhachai yiten el libo. What is important in life? What do we take with us after 120 years? We need to look no further than this great man to be inspired, at the very least, to try to emulate him in what… Read more »
I stayed in Morristown sukkos, of which very few people were there. Reb Zwiebel invited me over for a seuda, and I was very new to being frum, and I had an orientation of spirituality of secular philosophy. I expressed to him I was concerned about myself because, although I was being frum and had no problem with that, I was worried because I did not know that hashem exists, for certain. I forgot exactly how I expressed it, but I remember after I had expressed it, and I thought in a way which sounded sort of heretical, he merely… Read more »

I was a bochur in Morristown Yeshiva in 5737 and 5738. At that time Sefer Hamaamorim from the Rebbe Rashab (today is chof Marcheshvan). I believe that the first volume was completed and printed in the middle of the winter. Everyone knew that it was a deep and difficult hemshech. Nevertheless, a few months later, Reb Mailach held a farbrengen for the bochurim. What was the occasion? He just completed the entire sefer and he wanted to farbreng to commemorate the completion. I couldn’t believe how it was possible to complete it so quickly. But that was one more indication… Read more »

We need a book of all these personal experiences from Talmidim. They can teach us more than all the educational lectures, modern teaching methods…
I once sold Borsalinos in Morristown. Only one person came and said “My wife says I need a new hat”. Not only that, but that chossid was the only one of hundreds to not at all look in the mirror, trusting my judgement”. One of a kind
BDE, Reb Meilach will be missed. Is there a web archive of his Shiurim?
My most beloved mechuten and. very sad news to hear.
as a young timid and shy boy of 16 far from home and first yeshiva experience, spent 3 years with daily exposure to R Tweibel zl, together with hb’mechayim l’chayim R Heber shy, gave me the grounding and chizuk to help build me into the person that BH I am today. May his memory be for a blessing.Arichas yomim to the whole family
you can look up his children’s email addresses on chabad.org

I think this should suffice.
it’s a really nice suggestion and I thank you for that.
A relative.
The entire Jewish community in Ashland, Oregon sends condolences to the entire family. ברוך דיין האמת . Our deepest condolences to his barsherte, Libby, and to all his children and grandchildren, and to the thousands of students whose neshamas he touched over the decades.
Rav Meilach was incredible Chossid unique I was zoche to learn chassidus farbrengens and drive him to his house multiple times Also Driving to.NY multiple times including . BD”E. Most people talk about how smart and what a gaon Reb Meilech was. I want to share more than that. When I first came to learn in Morristown I was shocked to see how patient and kind of a person Reb Meilach was. For the first time in 6 years in Yeshiva I felt comfortable asking a teacher anything and everything without being embarrassed. Event the dumbest bochur in Yeshiva felt comfortable asking him any question and he would never make a bochur feel bad. One time he called in a friend of mine to talk to him as… Read more »

Was in Tiferes several years. We were in awe of Reb melech and he was humbled by us simple Baal teshivas of the Rebbe. He was a gaon olem that said good money to me and everyone and good night, a real mensch. He even tried to put a good word in for me with a relative shadchan. I was fortunate to be in his home a few times and saw how down to earth he was. In his merit may we take on to turn off our cell phones, especially in shul, and our soul phones and connect to… Read more »
i was one of a group of bochrim in Morristown in 5733-34, responsible for various mivtzaim and hafatza activities. One day Reb Meilich calls us over and suggests a particular area in mivtzaim deserving of extra efforts. That very next Shabbos, the Rebbe at farbrengen encouraged this very activity. Reb Meilich, in ‘apologizing’ for the prescient suggestion and in his humility says “nu, Bilaam is eich given ah yodeah daas elyon!”
He was a very special person in so many ways.
What a terrible loss
when i was a bochur he taught me how to think chassidus before davening, and he would encourage me to learn more כמות. He said that a bochur . . .should learn the entire chassidus. I was shocked and asked him if he had learned every sefer of chassidus and he said. Yes, and you can do it too. Sadly ihave not acomplished it. . .yet.
צדיקא דאתפטר……
I”m the only one that was upset that he became mashpia in the the yeshiva in 5765, because until then he taught me chassidus privately. His seder as a bocher was that he started to learn at 6 a.m. and went to sleep 3 a. m..on Thursday night he did not go to sleep at all..Before he got married he would farbreng with us ‘ ad or ha’boker’.He was one of the greatest G’onim that lived in the last few hundred years. ‘Haval al deavden v”lo mishdakrin’
I won’t write about what he did for me personally.
I wont write about what he contributed to community of chabad Chassidim as a whole.
What is remarkable that all this did not detract of his constant drive to Bittul.
I was, as so many others very fortunate to have been a Talmid of Reb Meilach.
May his family only know of Simchas from now on.
Sorry to hear of the passing of Rabbi Avi’s father. Condolences to the entire Zweibel family. I enjoyed meeting him several times at Avi and Faigy’s house. Although he was a such grand presence I always felt comfortable with hm and with our conversations.and exchanges. Such a huge loss.
I studied in Morristown for two years. Having heard about Reb Mailech’s photographic memory, I tried to find a way to put it to the test. As he was so humble, I could not just go and ask him random questions. As luck would have it, I happened upon a torn piece of a corner of a page of gemara, that was from the back of the gemara/ commentary part. I approached him under the pretense that i wanted to know what gemara it was from so that I can tape it back together. At first he demurred and wouldn’t… Read more »
With a breaking heart I respond to the announcement of the passing of this hero of the Jewish people.
I found much joy in being in his presence, and although I never
had the privilege of learning directly from him, I will always remember him with great respect.
Oy. I remember coming late one erev pesach to hear a siyum instead of fasting for my son, Akiva. I missed all the siyumim but took a chance to go to R. Zweibel’s house. Sure enough, he just pulled another mesechta he had finished out of the pocket. Besides lomdus in every area, he cared for people, a rare quality. BDE.
i remember while learning in Newark New Jersey, on one Friday night Seder Chassidus, they had no one to say a Maamar Baal Peh, since there was a misunderstanding at hand. Reb mailach upon seeing the predicament, said, to everyone’s surprise, that he will say a Maamar. So without preparation,Reb Mailach ,out of pure memory, chazzered a Maamar which was rather quite lengthy! I witnessed this personally.”Chaval al d’abdin v’lo mishtackchin”-“Alas for those who are lost from this world and not found”.
I will miss him terribly!

Such a rarity in an increasingly superficial, inauthentic world. Reb Meilech was a man of truth. But unlike other supposed champions of truth. There was not a tinge of negativity, harshness, or ego about him. He was quite simply the nicest man you could meet. Not a grain of narcissism about him. While learning in Morristown Yeshivah, we were privy to a depth of caring, sensitivity and humility almost unbecoming a man of his stature. I will forever treasure the hours I was privileged to spend with him immersed in a learning experience I doubt I’ll ever find again –… Read more »

A truly great, and humble, giant. As another one of his many talmidim, I echo all the sentiments above, made your shaala feel important, gave you a love and passion for chassidus and all. i recall his Friday nights – in the winter – when he would invite the bochrim over to his home after the meal, where it would be a sort of roundtable on chassidishe maysiyos and concepts and any questions they might have. The last week of the winter season – that year it so happened (could be other years as well?) – that the bochrim from… Read more »

We used him as a Rov. So down to earth, and practical.
He was as humble, as much as he was a Torah Giant.
He was one of the few living examples, of a true Chossid, Yiras Shamayim, and Lamdan, that everyone acknowledged.
In the year 5741 Rabbi Herson arranged for a very prominent litvishe Rosh Yeshiva to visit Morristown and to give a shiur to all of the bochurim and hanhola. In the middle of his shiur – having built up his thesis – Reb Meilach suddenly blurted out “but we can answer everything with a commentary written by the Makneh in gemorah Kiddushin”. The Rosh Yeshiva was stunned as was everyone else. Back then, Reb Meilach was not officially teaching nigleh; only chassidus. His breadth of knowledge was matched by his incredible humility.
I didnt know him personally nor did I study under him at any time,,
But do remember seeing him around 770, as a Bochur, and what not,,, thing I do remember is that he had an amazing Tziyur there was a Yiras Kovod for him when in his presents. A Baal Tzirur indeed,
Zol er zein a gute beter for us all.
seems as the Rebbe wants him there for major accomplishments,,,
I spent time with him many years ago and I cherish the memories. He was one of the greats and he will be sorely missed.
I shall forever treasure those precious three years, having the greatest priviledge of being a Talmid of the unforgettable Reb Elimelech Zweibel.
Yehi Zichroi Boruch Mayatah V’ad Olom!
Reb Meilech had a great influence in my life during my time in Morristown. He was quiet, humble man who always listened. He will be missed. He had many, many students who revere and love him. Ma zaroi bechaim af who bechaim.
Incredible bekius in Nigleh, Chasidus and Kabbalah, amazing bitul – he would always preface a quote from the most remote and obscure places with “dachtzich mir” i think or perhaps…, he never wasted a moment, and amazing bitul, what a chosid!!! in any other community he would be a gadol shebigedolim. That was totally irrelevant. It was never about him. The goal was to live up to being the Rebbe’s chosid and fulfilling the Rebbe’s expectations! He was an inspiration and dugma chaya to thousands around the world. חבל על דאבדין – עד מתי !!!
BDE he was my teacher for a couple yrs
An outstanding Mashpia in Nigleh and Chassidus. He was the ‘backbone’ of my Derech HaChassidus .He will be terribly missed. Can’t believe this happened! As a true Chassid of the Rebbe, he will demand with a Pnimiyus that Moshiach come right away, and he will be matzliach!
I once complained to R’ Mailech that it was not fair. “I had a bigger yetszer harah than other bochurim”. R’ Mailech smiled at me and said, If you feel that you have a bigger yetszer harah, it is a Siman that you have a bigger Yetszer Tov.
He will be sorely missed.
Reb Meilech was my uncle. i write these words with pride, although i was one of MANY. and really barely had a personal connection with him. BUT- ill always remember the pride and awe that i would watch him with from very young. i always knew that this was a chossid, and i felt proud and refined around him, like the air around him was special.
Oy. There are no words to say. This is a loss for entire klal Yisroel. No one knew him. The little bit we knew of him was amazing. But no one knew how great he really was.
Dearest Libby and the entire family Hamakom yenachem ….. May you have the true nechama through the coming of Moshiach Now. Difficult to describe Melech caring, sensitive, the epitome of a Mashpia and much more. Being a Talmud of Melech as well, can’t not mention when Melech will call you into his office and learn nigleh like he was a Maggid Shiur, then just farbrenged or schmoozed to see how you’re really doing. He will be missed a lot. Whenever a new kehos sefer would come out (I heard) that Melech would go through it cover to cover. I remember… Read more »

Learned by him in Morristown for a year in 1999-2000. Giant of a man, had the whole shas at his fingertips… He had a custom to call each bocher in to his office to spend a half hour or so going over the mamer that we were learning in seder. For the first few visits to his office I never noticed that he had a sink in the office in the corner…He was intense. As soon as you sat down at his desk he started to go over the mamer. I remember that the following morning after his wedding he was the first or one of the first to come to seder chasidus to learn.
He had a Seder where he made sure to speak to every bochur in zal . He kept a list and would call the bochur over asking him how he is ….if he has questions etc , he made sure to speak to every bochur !!! . During Seder chasidus each bochur would approach him with questions and he made sure to remember who was the next bochur on line waiting .
He did all this quietly, as everything else he did , with out “blitus” , noise and attention seeking .
BDE
Can’t believe it.
this is a story that I remember from the early years in Morristown, There was a bochur that came (from a litvishe yeshive), for the summer to learn and get a taste of what is a chabad yeshive, just before Rosh Chodesh Elul when the Yeshivos start learning for the Ziman, this bochur notified or just told the Bochurim that he is going back to the Yeshiva he came from , he was not impressed enough to leave his yeshiva, That Night after seder chasidus Reb Mailach O”H farbrainged and took alot of Mashke to the point where a regular… Read more »

I remember going to a farbreghen at Reb Meilechs house, it went late into the night, and despite how late it was Reb Meilech pulled down a sefer mishnayos and continued learning. He used every second he had to learn. And was extremely me’suder with it. A great lesson for us future jews
I had the merit to learn with him besides Chasidus, also Niglah. When he would learn the Gemoro, he explained it with all meforshim as if the books were in front of him, each one clear and detailed
Boki in Nigleh, Chassidus. Boki beshas veposkim. A true gaon adir!!! Besides the fact that was a real chassidishe Yid and true example. I remember when he called me over when I first was in yeshiva, and the way he spoke to me was really amazing, how he was able to make he bochurim comfortable to speak to him. He didn’t wait for them to come to him, he called them over.
