It has been 33 years since Yeshiva Chanoch Lenaar was founded in 1976 in response to the Lubavitcher Rebbe’s declaration of “Shnas Hachinuch” (The Year of Torah Education).
The original goal of Rabbi Yaakov Bryski, Dean of Yeshiva Chanoch Lenaar, was to give boys with little or no formal Jewish education an opportunity to study and learn about their heritage. It was an idea whose time had come, and the yeshiva was blessed with great success.
Since then, YCL has never wavered from its commitment to accept boys from diverse backgrounds, and provide them with a true yeshiva education. The objective is to create a total Jewish environment that instills a desire to learn and a love of Yiddishkeit, while radiating warmth and acceptance.
Chanoch Lenaar’s innovative approach is the key to its success. Classes in the Hebrew Department are divided into six levels, rather than by grade. Beginners learn the fundamentals of Hebrew reading and prayer, while students on the most advanced level study Gemara with commentaries. Small class size and a staff of experienced, dedicated teachers allow each child to succeed and achieve his full potential.
The administration and faculty are always available to answer any questions, providing a wonderful support system for students as they develop their commitment to Torah observance. At the same time, students can complete the New York State high school curriculum, earning a Regents diploma at the end of 12th grade. A Resource Room staffed by professionals in special education and psychology is available for boys who are not up to grade level.
Chanoch Lenaar’s diverse student body comes from all over the New York metropolitan area, the United States and around the world. YCL takes seriously its role as surrogate parent to those who are far from home, with a comfortable and inviting dormitory facility, delicious and nourishing meals, and wonderful and caring dormitory counselors to supervise and mentor the boys. During recess and in the evenings, indoor and outdoor recreational facilities are available, giving students a much-needed outlet to appropriately channel their energies.
In an effort to help the maximum number of boys who are in need of YCL’s unique approach, registration has now been opened for the upcoming school year, for grades 8–12.
