An event will take place to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the riots which took place in Crown Heights in August of 1991.
The full day festival will be held on Sunday, August 21 to mark 25 years since the tragic events and to mark 25 years of healing in the community.
The entire community is invited to attend the event, which will begin with a ceremony and memorial at 11 am at the Jewish Children’s Museum on the corner of Eastern Parkway and Kingston Avenue, and will be addressed by elected officials, and religious and community leaders.
Following the ceremony, the crowd will walk together to Brower Park near the Brooklyn Children’s Museum, where a free day of rides and entertainment will take place.
Games, music, rides, Kosher and Non-Kosher food will be available.
“The event will serve to bring our communities together,” says Devorah Halberstam, community activist who is on the planning committee for the event. “We must never forget the terrible day in 1991 when Gavin Cato was killed in a tragic accident and Yankel Rosenbaum was murdered in the days of unrest which followed. I am hoping everyone will attend, and bring their families to be a part of this and remember the history of Crown Heights.”
The event is funded by the City of NY and is organized by Project Care which was created after the Crown Heights riots to encourage harmony in the Crown Heights communities.

Even the Giorgenti Commission Report was a “whitewash” when it comes to the issue of Dinkins’ responsibility for allowing the violence against the Jewish Community to go on for 3 days. Dinkins the racist had earlier also allowed violence against Korean grocery stores. Now it was a whole Community of Jews instead. Busses of outside trouble makers led by Al Sharpton and his cronies fueled the pogrom/violence. Later, after the violence Sharpton personally went to 770 to try and serve our dear Rebbe (the Rebbe had already left for the Ohel at the time) with court papers, notwithstanding that the Rebbe clearly had no liability for the accident. It wasn’t only Israeli private security, but also Shmira (back then there was no separate Shomrim) voluntunteers, as well as shmira/shomrim from Williamsburg and other neighborhoods, and Curtis Sliwa and the Guardian Angels who patrolled the streets while the police stood around and did nothing for 3 days on Dinkins’ orders.

I agree, the riots was a pogrom. Let no one fool you. An unfortunate accident led to an intentional murder. Jews have never been violent. Harmony and peace will come when those who live along side us will stop the violence.
