Chabad House for travelers in Melbourne, directed by Rabbi Dudu Lider, is celebrating 19 years since its foundation.
“Since our founding at Ohel Devorah at Meadow Street – who helped facilitate our services in our first 9 years – we have serviced over 50,000 Israeli travellers with a Home away from Home,” says Rabbi Lieder.
At Beit Chabad there has not been a single Shabbat meal without guests for 19 years. At the new centre they will be able to triple their output, expanding their offerings to travellers and young Jewish adults.
They also look forward to opening their first woman’s mikvah in Caulfield. Making it easier for the women of the community to fulfil this beautiful mitzvah.
“We are committed to supporting the many Israeli men and women who arrive on our shores after having spent three or more years on the front lines defending our Holy Land. Often these tourists find themselves in a very vulnerable and sensitive state, prone to the many influences that abound.”
Rabbi Lider says his goal is to assist these Israelis both physically and spiritually thus reigniting the flame of yiddishkeit within them. “We pride ourselves on providing these services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year,” he says.
Beit Chabad of Melbourne offers an array of services tailored to any Israeli backpacker or community member in need. These include: Temporary emergency shelter for those in need, Shabbat and Yom Tov prayers followed by festive meals, which continue to attract hundreds of participants, Shiurim and study courses delving into fundamental Jewish subjects such as belief, history and mysticism, General physical and spiritual guidance.
