What’s her excuse this time?
U.S. Representative Yvette Clarke, who represents a large Jewish constituency in Brooklyn, co-signed a highly critical letter to Israel and how it deals with Palestinian terror youth.
Clarke has infuriated Jews in her 11th Congressional District for voting against a pro-Israel bill in 2009, signing a letter to pressure Israel over the Gaza blockade in 2010 and supporting the Iran nuclear deal in 2016.
Despite these actions, Clarke has visited Israel and has assured rabbis and Jewish officials in Brooklyn of her “unwavering support for Israel.”
Her newest contentious Israel-related move is joining a House letter on Tuesday urging President Barack Obama to appoint a “Special Envoy for Palestinian Youth.”
She was one of the 20 Members of Congress, led by U.S. Representative Betty McCollum (D-MN), calling an envoy that would “engage diplomatically with Israel, the Palestinian Authority, and human rights groups in the region.”
“[Palestinian] children live under the constant fear of arrest, detention, and violence at the hand of the Israeli military, as well as the threat of recruitment or conscription into armed groups,” the lawmakers wrote.
They were honest enough to add in the letter that the danger these Palestinian children face is also “the threat of recruitment or conscription into armed groups.”
“The recent attacks against Israelis, including those perpetrated by Palestinian youth, are profoundly disturbing and must be condemned,” they wrote, adding that “appropriate measures must be taken by security forces to defend themselves and innocent civilians.”
While noting that “The people of Israel have a right to security and we support U.S. policies which advance Israel’s security,” they expressed “profound concern regarding a longstanding policy of detaining, interrogating, and imprisoning Palestinian children as young as 12 or 13 for up to a year… in violation of international standards.”
One of the bill’s backers, Representative Hank Johnson (D-GA), complained that the number of Palestinian children arrested by Israeli forces has more than doubled since October 2015.
What Johnson and his colleagues didn’t mention is that Palestinian youth have taken a leading role in the bloody “Stabbing Intifada” that started on September 2015. The current wave of terror resulted in 35 Jewish deaths and over 400 people injured.
A statement from the office of Congresswoman McCollum says the proposed bill “is a response to specific concerns about the cruel, inhuman, and degrading treatment and punishment of Palestinian children while in the Israeli military detention system.”
Although Clarke didn’t sign on the last statement, Jewish Brooklynites are left to wonder if she agrees with the sentiments.

This sounds like an amazing evening & one which should be replicated in every Jewish community. However…. it would be even more supportive if this committee organized trips to Israel so Crown Heights & other communities can meet with victims of terror, with soldiers, politicians & ordinary people (like us) so you can better answer the Yvette Clarkes. One thing I would ask – leave the so-called “leaders” at home. The damage they have caused to our safety is huge.

We will never be a majority in her district, what we can be is a must have voting block. Right now we aren’t even that. The OU says that not registering to vote and not showing up on election day is the single biggest handicap towards getting favorable legislation whether its about Eretz Yisroel or our Yeshivas.

If their youth had a program that was similar to Boy Scouts that was being overseen by the US government that kept the Palestinian kids out of terrorist training camps that could be very good. I’m sure Israel would like to do that except that they are not given the opportunity.

Seeing community activists and ‘balebatim’ from our community running after her has always been a pathetic and awful sight. The naivete and lack of dignity that inspires people to blind themselves to the true nature of the beast and bend over backwards to support those who don’t feel the need to hide their contempt for us – supporting them sometimes instead of potential leaders among our own community, is not only sad but dangerous. People will respect us more when we stand up for ourselves and stop relying on a cup that holds no water.
