Students of 7th grade at Beis Chaya Mushka Junior High School in Los Angeles were visited this week by the mother of their beloved classmate who tragically passed away last year.
Mrs. Hadassah Spalter came on Monday to meet the classmates of her late daughter, Chaya OBM, and presented each of them with a unique and meaningful gift: a leather-bound pink-colored Tehillim.
“Chaya, who is named for Rebbetzen Chaya Mushka, was always so careful to say Tehillim on Shabbos Mevarchim,” Mrs. Spalter said before handing out books of Tehillim embossed with her daughter’s name and photo.
“She would wake up extra early and say Tehillim. I had to remind her to eat and even after she came home from Shul, she would find the time to say Tehillim in the middle of her busy schedule of running Mesibas Shabbos and fun and games for the kids…”
Inspired by the example she set, Chaya Spalter’s classmates immediately took on the hachlata to increase in their Tehillim this coming Shabbos and to complete the entire Tehillim individually or in partners.
Mrs. Spalter praised their decision and spoke about the power of Tehillim, retelling beautiful stories and examples from the Frierdiker Rebbe‘s writings. She emphasized the point of “vehachai yiten el libo,” the living shall take to heart.
A special thank you was given to the anonymous donor who printed these beautiful Tehillims for the Chaya’s family, classmates, as well as for the Yeshiva Ohr Elchanan Chabad led by her grandfather, Rabbi Ezra Schochet.
As the Tehillims were being given out, the fire alarm in the school building went off, sending the student out to Pico Boulevard.
“Chaya must be pulling one of her funny pranks on us,” Mrs. Spalter joked with the girls. The girls left the building, half of them carrying the Tehillims. The other ones were carried out in the box.
“This is so Chaya,” remarked Mrs. Spalter, “wanting us to laugh at the most serious times!”, she said as she walked down the escape route with the seventh graders.
Instead, standing outside the 770-shaped school building, the distribution ceremony was completed. As the girls marveled at their brand new Tehillims, Mrs. Spalter was asked to lead them in the last kapital 150.
“When you receive a phone call that your relative whom you haven’t seen in a long time is in the car, on the way to your house from the airport, you already begin to jump for joy even though you can’t see them yet,” explained Mrs. Geula Newman, principal of Bais Rebbe Junior High.
“You stop thinking about how sad you are because you miss them and you begin dancing and waiting excitedly for the door to open…now, we will say a kapital which thanks Hashem for the biggest miracle of Techiyas Hameisim. We are so happy because we know any second Chaya will join us! We will laugh together, dance together and say more tehillim, singing thanks to Hashem.”
This is amazing – I just wish that there was no music – it made it hard to hear the speaker.
its real!
say tehillim, do an extra mitzvah, or just BE HAPPY!
