As the cold starts settling in, and Chanukah swiftly approaches, for the bochurim of Oholei Torah this is no regular time, knowing how much the rebbe “shturemed” about Chanukah Mivtzoim.
These weeks are packed with preparations for the grand yearly mivtzoim campaign, famously known as the “Oholei Torah buses,” which enables busloads of bochurim to head out to different locations in Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan and Long Island every night of Chanukah, helping out the shluchim in their areas.
The bochurim visit hundreds of homes, stores and apartment buildings to light the Menorah with hundreds of yidden, giving out thousands of Menorahs, holiday guides, doughnuts, dreidels and more, warming up their homes and lives with the light of Chanukah and Judaism, and preparing the world for the coming of Moshiach.
The impact the bochurim have on the communities is incredible, here are just a few of the reports which came in from previous years:
“Mivtza Chanukah opens the doors of many Jewish homes, and many have joined our shul and Chabad house as a result. People look forward to having the bochurim come, and it makes a big shturem and persumei nissa, in the whole community,” says Rabbi Avraham Hertz, Chabad of Bensonhurst.
“Chanukah is practically the only time we are able to reach our entire community with the help of the bochurim, not just visiting or giving matzos, but actually lighting the Menorah, singing with them etc.,” said the Shliach in Starret City. “People have changed tremendously and added drastically in ‘the candle of mitzvos and the light of torah,’ mezuzos, shiurim and more, with it all beginning from that one light of the Chanukah mivtzoim.”
“Last year a busload of energetic bochurim from Oholei Torah brought the spirit of Chanukah to hundreds of homes in our community. They lit the Menorah with many families, gave out candles, dreidels, Chanukah guides and more. Many people commented about how nice and pleasant the bochurim were, and to their credit, we were introduces to many new families whom we have since gotten to know, and in their merit began participating in a variety of programs,” says Rabbi Heshy Ceitlin, Chabad of Sea Gate, NY.
